Mehso-so

I am not sure what to make of this book. The main character is a damaged woman, emerging again in a new form, physically and mentally. She transforms into someone with total control over her body, in motion, strength & stillness.
Three people close to her tell about her, but just like them, we never really get to know her. This sounds interesting but I am unsure what the author meant by writing this book or what I am supposed to take away from it.

Librarybelle That‘s a very unique cover 13mo
Cinfhen Cool photo but I think I‘ll pass on this book 🤪 13mo

Megabooks I feel that way about some books. I loved this though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it would have made for interesting discussions at CL imo. 13mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I wasn‘t sure what to make of it either. But I agree with @Megabooks - it would have made a great CL book, and I‘m sure the discussions would have enlightened me somewhat! 13mo
Deblovestoread On my shelf but not rushing to read it. 13mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Like @squirrelbrain I agree that it would be a perfect CL read. Our discussion would definitely have added to the experience! And Helen and I are a bit of the odd ones out because all reviews on Litsy were raving! Yet I wouldn‘t rush @Cinfhen @Deblovestoread 😀 13mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle It‘s the UK edition I think 13mo
squirrelbrain I enjoyed it more than you Barbara, I think, but I didn‘t really understand it! 13mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Yes it was a pick for you too! 13mo
Ruthiella I didn‘t quite understand it either. At first I thought it was science fiction (in the first section at the gym). I never got a good sense of the woman-who and why she was… 13mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Exactly! I didn‘t understand why she became the way she did. Was she traumatized? By what? En why the need for followers when you‘re looking for stillness? 13mo

Fat Witch Summer | Lizzy Ives

Pickpick

I admit that I am not one to normally read coming of age teen books. But the cover was cute and the premise sounded interesting. So I decided to give Fat Witch Summer a shot. A great read, filled with adventure, magic, and self-discovery. Highly recommended to fans of The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow, A Rival Most Vial by RK Ashwick, Spell Bound by FT Lukens, and Cinder Ella by ST Lynn. #witch #comingofage #magic #bodypositive

#BodyPositive #RomCom (no slapstick, I swear!)

Serena doesn't appear at the altar, she breaks up with her gorgeous fiancé. Newly single she wants to get out again, but being plus size she hesitates. Still, she goes on a date each week and meets a lot of 'interesting' men.

Serena's new bestie, Nicole, helps her see herself in a different light and slowly Serena embraces her (new) self.

rockpools Such a joyful cover! I really like the look of this one. 1y

The Ugly Duchess | Eloisa James
post image
Pickpick

A good Regency second-chance romance. Theodora “Theo” and James were raised together, ward and son of a duke. Two days after their wedding, Theo discovers he needed her dowry. She throws him out, he (naturally) becomes a pirate, she a fashion icon (who needs to be pretty when you have excellent taste?). He returns on the day he‘d be declared dead, determined to convince Theo he always loved her.

ravenlee Oops, forgot #52books23 #bodypositive because Theo “Ugly Duchess” becomes a fashion icon, following her own rules and not trying to be conventionally pretty, relying instead on confidence and style, and her husband loves everything about her from the start. 2y

Know My Name: A Memoir | Chanel Miller
Pickpick

This was *such* a powerful book: thanks to @Amiable for the rev! Chanel Miller was raped by a stranger when too drunk to consent, took her attacker to court, and went viral as “Emily Doe” after he walked free after 3 months. Important issues: women do have a voice, vulnerability of people who don‘t have clear memory in the legal system, lack of support for trauma survivors, need for systemic change.

Amiable This book is an absolute tour de force. I am in awe of Chanel‘s courage, grit and perseverance. 3y

I was really surprised by how much I liked this book, because I hate reality TV and never watch it. It was a fun and enjoyable read, although I have a feeling I won‘t remember all that much about it a year from now. A perfect summer book.

Megabooks I feel the same way you do. 👍🏻 I read it about a year ago, and I remember a few scenes, but I couldn‘t recount the whole plot (other than it being a Bachelorette ripoff). It was an enjoyable read, though! (edited) 3y
Cinfhen Yesssss to this entire review but still a super light read! I bet audio was fun 🎧🎉 3y
alisiakae @Cinfhen it was great on audio! 3y

Gnora
The Dating Plan | Sara Desai
post image

Another Reader's Advisory moment from your friendly neighborhood librarian.

I'm mostly doing this because this is another title that reminds me a lot of a favorite novel that's difficult to find comps for. However, The Dating Plan reminded me so much of Bet Me and that thrilled me to no end! If your liked Daisy and Liam's banter and flirty dance, you will love Min and Cal.

#romance #contemporary #sweet #flirty #bodypositive #meetcute

Gnora When I was in undergrad I had two favorite books: one that I would own up to in class when asked and one that I wouldn't. Bet Me is the one I wouldn't own up to, because my younger self was very aware of the stigmas around reading romances and professing to like them. Grown-up me is out of cares to give about classist and sexist ideas about literature.

Bet Me is my favorite novel and I have read it more times than I care to count.

The most body positive statement was found in the Penis book, not the vagina one. He also took the exact approach I hoped for in the vagina book. “A small percentage of people are abnormal. If you think you might be, talk to your doctor.” End of discussion. 💙💙💙

GingerAntics @monkeygirlsmama see, this one is so much better. Surely there is an OB/GYN who can take a similar approach to the female side of the street. 4y

I have mixed feelings about this book. I certainly wouldn‘t call it body-positive. I couldn‘t help rolling my eyes at all the “feel empowered to get to your goal weight” and the talk of body composition. This is just the term “body-positive” being hijacked and used in opposition to what it‘s actually meant to be. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I like the idea of a personal health spectrum, with nonnegotiable things for when life is really crazy and more things for when things are calmer. I liked the discussion about not using the scale as a metric for progress (even though weight loss was discussed A LOT). Not sure how that goes together, honestly. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y
GingerAntics This had some serious religious undertones I could have done without. It‘s called “spirituality” within the book (which I‘m down for), but the language used is religious. Apparently prayer and church are good habits for your new healthy lifestyle! No word on how abusive church leaders contribute to one‘s health. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 4y
GingerAntics Another issue I had with this book was the constant plugging of the online resources on her website which require you to sign up for her email list. At times, it was at the end of every paragraph. Mention it once and then stick it in the back. If people want to sign up for your email list they will. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y

GingerAntics As a person with anxiety, I wasn‘t a fan of her assessment of the fight, flight, or freeze response (basically they‘re each just a different layer of self-centred thinking). That may be how she experiences those three instinctual responses, but it‘s not how everyone does and certainly not people who literally have a mental health issue. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y
GingerAntics Clearly she has little knowledge of mental health, but she will tell you how she‘s decided you should achieve mental health. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y
GingerAntics I can‘t say I‘d actually recommend this book. I might recommend the first chapter, but that‘s about it. After that, it quickly deteriorated into a book that is hardly distinctive from 99.9% of the books on this subject. #GillianGoerzen #TheElephantInTheGym #bodypositive #fitness 4y
Branwen Sorry this wasn't as enjoyable as you were hoping it would be! 4y
GingerAntics @Branwen I should know, by now, to avoid these things, but I always hope “this book” is different. It rarely ever is. It did have one thing I will incorporate into my life, so I guess it wasn‘t a total wash. 4y

Love every part of this. Honestly, this feels natural. It‘s society (and really rude men on the train platform) that make this “wrong” when it is actually the right way.
