We Unleash the Merciless Storm
We Unleash the Merciless Storm | Tehlor Kay Mejia
27 posts | 11 read | 12 to read
In this nail-biting sequel to Tehlor Kay Mejias critically acclaimed fantasy novel We Set the Dark on Fire, La Voz operative Carmen is forced to choose between the girl she loves and the success of the rebellion shes devoted her life to. Perfect for fans of The Handmaids Tale and Anna-Marie McLemore. Being a part of the resistance group La Voz is an act of devotion and desperation. On the other side of Medios border wall, the oppressed class fights for freedom and liberty, sacrificing what little they have to become defenders of the cause. Carmen Santos is one of La Vozs best soldiers. She spent years undercover, but now, with her identity exposed and the island on the brink of a civil war, Carmen returns to the only real home shes ever known: La Vozs headquarters. There she must reckon with her beloved leader, who is under the influence of an aggressive new recruit, and with the devastating news that her true love might be the target of an assassination plot. Will Carmen break with her community and save the girl who stole her heartor fully embrace the ruthless rebel she was always meant to be?

It is said that only two living souls saw the Salt God leave the earth for the last time.
At the edge of the island, where sand met sea, what had once been a glorious and peaceful land lay in ruins.

This book was REVOLUTIONARY! No, but really... this book is about revolutions. (Sorry for the horrible pun.) I finished this a few days ago but never got to posting a review because I was studying for upcoming exams, but here I am! This was a great book, and I would recommend it to absolutely anyone! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Is that a Harry Potter reference? Because I certainly caught it!

Fear was not as powerful a motivator as duty, or loyalty, or love.

But Carmen had never been afraid of death.
Not her own, anyway.

In some places this dragged and I rolled my eyes at the characters, but I liked seeing Carmen‘s POV, the romance was incredibly satisfying, and I just LOVED the ending.

Loved this follow up to We Set the Dark on Fire. Great duology. The first book provides the world building for this story of rebellion against an authoritarian regime. The second book is full of action, adventure, and queer romance. The cast of characters features many badass female revolutionaries.

Audiobooking while dying pasta to make personal pencil box sensory bins for the littles in my class. They have missed being able to play in our big sensory bin since COVID started.

A sequel that breaks the mold by being maybe even better than the first book (though to be fair its been a while since I read We Set the Dark on Fire). Told from the perspective of Carmen after she rejoins La Voz, torn between her loyalties to a resistance that seems changed and corrupted and her love for the girl she left behind.

4 stars / ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another solid addition to this story that gives a different POV than the first book. There's a lot of action, which I enjoyed, but I was still wanting more backstory so I could feel fully invested in what Carmen is fighting to change.

Fun read though, and even with its few flaws, I still enjoyed it.

Wow! This book was fast paced and action packed. The second book in this duology is told in Carmen‘s POV instead of Dani‘s like in the first book. It refreshing to get a new point of view since we knew so little of Carmen in the first book. It was interesting to see Carmen grow into something other then the wife of Mateo. There is so much I can say about this book but just read it yourself! I enjoyed this one more than the first book.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

emtobiasz Is it just the two books or will there be more in the series? 4y
That-Bookish-Hiker @emtobiasz I think it‘s just the two because the way book 2 ends is pretty final and when I looked on goodreads there was nothing else in the series. 4y

Although it didn't quite live up to We Set the Dark on Fire, this was a wild ride with a whole lot of little twists, and I absolutely loved that it was Carmen's POV, and not Dani's as in the first book.

The second book switches to Carmen's point of view. I'm not sure how much was the POV switch versus just more things coming to fruition in the second half of this duology, but I enjoyed this one more than the first.

The fact that I do not already own book 1 is amazing because the designer did such an amazing job. The spin pulls me in every time I'm at BN. And now book two is just as good.

Maybe now i will finally pull out my wallet? Any of you read book 1 (We set the dark on fire)
