This is my book club‘s pick for this month, & I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling #audiobook! I definitely found myself listening at every opportunity and really enjoyed both performances. Told in two perspectives- Bess & Alexandra‘s lives are brought together by the titular character. While credulity may be strained at times, this is an engaging read & I‘m looking forward to hearing what the rest of the group thought of it! Well-researched too!

A little far-fetched, but I gave into the fiction, stopped my criticism, and enjoyed the story and the excellent performance by the readers. 3/5⭐️s

This was a great audiobook. There are 2 narrators with 2 different POV‘s. Set in the 1750s in London, it tells the story of 2 women from very different backgrounds and what lengths they will go to for the child they both love. I need to read more books from this time period! 4⭐️

Another great historical fiction from Stacey Hall. Bess leaves her illegitimate daughter Clara at the Foundling's Hospital. Six years later she goes to get her back. She finds out that her daughter has been reclaimed already. Bess goes about trying too find out who took her, why and plan to find her. It was such a great book, well written and explores families, motherhood and class. Set in Georgian London.

In May, two books I hope to read will be these. Both are for the letter challenge and hopefully from this you can see it is the letter H.

1. The Foundling by Stacey Halls
2. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

I can hardly believe that I haven't read or seen the TV shows of Handmaid's Tale. #tbr

Very much enjoying this book, but a little salty that the UK gets the beautiful cover and perfect title on the left. Why did the US publisher have to mess with it?! (Disclaimer—I know nothing about the publishing industry or why changes like this are made 😂)

Where are my historical lit friends? Doesn‘t this sound like a good buddy read? Or have you read it already?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I enjoyed this one immensely and read it in two days. Bess a street hawker in Georgian London, is forced by circumstance to leave her baby at the Foundling Hospital, when she returns, six years later to claim her, she discovers that baby 627 has already been collected, by her mother, the day after she was left. Will Bess be able to recover the child she has lost?

Jumping straight into my next read, this should nicely complement the biography of Elizabeth Fry I‘m also reading.

The Foundling is captivating and beautiful historical novel. From chapter one I was desperate to know how it was going to turn out. The
characters are three dimensional, the personal stakes are so high for everyone I had to read fast before I got too stressed.
I flew through it, and couldn't wait to finish. Halls has a gift for storytelling, and it's a privilege to enjoy her writing. Would recommend to fans of Laura Purcell or Mary Shelley.

I loved The Familiars so much that I had to buy this one. After the world turned tipsy-turvy, I decided to splurge on a copy from Book Depository. Totally stoked to receive it today AND discover it is a signed copy! ❤️

This was such a brilliant story, I throughly enjoyed it.
When pregnant Bess gives up her baby to the Foundling hospital she has every intention of claiming her precious child back.
But when she finally earns enough money to go and collect her she is distraught to find out that someone has been there before her and the person who took her was actually Bess!
Bess cannot get over this. And dedicates herself to solving this mystery of what happened.

The pitch-perfect prose brings Georgian London to vivid life, and strongly engages us with the central protagonist Bess Bright. She has had to give up her newborn baby Clara and the story follows her quest years later to find her daughter again. It makes lots of points about social divisions in the eighteenth (and twenty-first?) centuries and what it means to be a mother, all wrapped up in a page-turning narrative.

Well, what can I say? This is beautifully written historical fiction at its finest. It tells of the differences in social status, the huge gap between the wealthy and the poor and the challenges they face on a daily basis. It also tells of motherhood and just how far a mother will go for her child.

Both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
