Between the Acts | Virginia Woolf
In Woolfs last novel, the action takes place on one summers day at a country house in the heart of England, where the villagers are presenting their annual pageant. A lyrical, moving valedictory.

Virginia Woolf wrote a freaking masterpiece within the last few hours of her life, but was too talented to realize it. I‘m sad that she died thinking this shiny brilliance was but a trivial effort. This is a must read if you like Woolf.

Packing for a weeklong stay at the in-laws. Along with my Kindle (just in case!), taking these two. Between the Acts is my final Woolf novel. And Girl, Woman, Other is a #TOB pick I'm excited to read. And, inevitably I will buy myself something while I'm there.

Cinfhen Safe travels 💕Hope you love Girl xx 5y

Leftcoastzen Wow ,I love Woolf , hope you have enjoyed the novels, I think I remember when you posted you were starting on her works.👍👏 5y
Leftcoastzen Are you called the daughter-in-law who reads too much?😀 5y
JenniferP Congrats on reading (almost!) all of Woolf's novels. I did that over the past few years as well. It was so interesting to read them all that some time I want to read that huge Hermione Lee biography of Woolf and reread the novels in order. 5y
merelybookish @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Thanks everyone! Two day drive to get there so need to survive that first. 😬 5y
merelybookish @Moray_Reads Thanks! I'm excited for both of them! 5y
merelybookish @Leftcoastzen I tried to read all Woolf this year. Managed most of her fiction and some diaries and letters. Lots left to read! Fortunately my in-laws are readers too! So I'm allowed to mostly read in peace. 5y
merelybookish @JenniferP Thanks! I feel I've gotten to understand her so much by reading her works. I read some of her nonfiction too but she wrote so much. May take another year or two to read it all! 5y
TrishB No where in the U.K. is a two day drive away! 5y
merelybookish @TrishB Very different! And I bet nowhere in UK is as desolate and unpopulated as some of the areas we will drive through! Heading from Colorado, northwest to British Columbia. 5y
BarbaraBB A great trip though I think, through some amazing scenery. But maybe you‘re used to that! 5y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB No, I don't think you get used to it! Still beautiful! Well, once we get through Wyoming. It's a pretty bleak drive through there. (Although I know it's spectacular further north.) 5y

The #travellingbook arrived this morning- I'm excited to start my first Virginia Woolf, but also, strangely, a little nervous. And the notebook is looking amazing!

@Libby1 Thank you so much for the extras 😊. That bookmark 😍😂, Dairy Milk is always most welcome 😋, and the book is just fab!

@River_Voice who am I sending this to after?

quietlycuriouskate Hope you enjoy the book! 😊 @TrishB is next. (By the way, did a birthday card turn up from me? I have my suspicions about one of the local post boxes. 😟) 6y
Libby1 You‘re welcome! 😃 6y
rockpools @River_Voice I'm so sorry Kate! Yes, it arrived safely, and was lovely (Your postbox has a reprieve- until the next time!) The whole weekend was higher-than-normal-crazy, and I totally forgot I hadn't posted. 😘 6y

quietlycuriouskate Which reminds me ... just checking: @Caroline2 and @CouronneDhiver are you still interested in this travelling book? I realise that it's a long time since you both signed up for it. 6y

Have you ever wondered what books you would bring to a castaway island?

I‘m not, in general, a re-reader of books, but I think I just might bring Woolf‘s books with me into exile. I find layer upon layer of beauty and meaning to her words.

This is not a book for someone who wants a clear plot or resolution. I couldn‘t read something like this all the time, but it was a treat.

Thank you, @River_Voice for choosing this as a #TravellingBook.

Libby1 This will be on its way to you soon, @RachelO ! 6y

“The flower blazed between the angles of the roots. Membrane after membrane was torn. It blazed a soft yellow, a lambent light under a film of velvet; it filled the caverns behind the eyes with light. All that inner darkness became a hall, leaf smelling, earth smelling of yellow light. And the tree was beyond the flower; and the grass, the flower and the tree were entire.”

It was wonderful to delve back into the world of Virginia Woolf again after a long time away. While it was a bit more disjointed than her other books (likely due to her unfortunate death prior to final revisions), it was still a thought provoking and excellent read.

Thank you @River_Voice for organizing this #travellingbook! Who do I send it to next?

It's impossible to read this book, Virginia Woolf's last and published posthumously, without her death casting a long shadow. The melancholy in all her work seems sharper and more profound, her characters long for escape and that longing is piercing in the quiet passages. And yet her humour still comes through, weary and indulgent though it may seem. There's a recognition of a world transformed and the uncertainty of those those caught in it ⤵️

Moray_Reads Above all it's about the parts we all play, willing and unwilling, public and private. Can we really recognise ourselves when they are revealed to us? Do we want to? 7y

saresmoore Sheesh, Moray, that‘s one helluva review! You brought tears to my eyes. I‘m with @LeahBergen in that I feel I must read this immediately. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @LeahBergen Just before her death she wrote to her publisher that she was unhappy with the "triviality" of the book. By the time he opened the letter she was dead. But even without that tragic story it doesn't feel trivial, her work never does, even when it feels on trivial things. 7y
Soubhiville Wow what a beautiful review! I have tears in my eyes too @saresmoore ! 7y
saresmoore I can‘t imagine that she had any clue of the depth of her influence on her readers. Helen Humphrey‘s The Lost Garden is such a beautiful love letter (even literally, actually) to Woolf that it brought me to an even deeper appreciation of her. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh I haven't come across that one. But I did just order a copy. Thanks 😘 7y
LeahBergen @saresmoore @Moray_Reads I had never sobbed while reading a biography until I read her suicide letter to Leonard for the first time. OhmyGod. I was a mess for a whole afternoon. 7y
batsy Death casting a long shadow, indeed. This quote is just 💔💔 7y

This is probably the most specific of my many book-related playlists. Does anyone else do this? (Sadly the book is an auction image and not owned by me *sigh*)

Dogearedcopy I did it for ‘The Bells‘ (by Richard Harvell) but in general, and I might put something together for ‘Bel Canto‘ (by Ann Patchett) when it comes round in the postal group I belong to but in general, no. Though I loved creating mix tapes back in the day, building playlists doesn‘t appeal to me as much (I have no idea why!) (edited) 7y
readinginthedark Neat idea! How do you determine what goes on them? 7y
Moray_Reads @readinginthedark sometimes they're easy/obvious. This one is Max Richter's (my favourite composer) Three Worlds album which is inspired by Virginia Woolf's works plus a few of my favourites from his other albums, and Philip Glass's soundtrack for the Hours. Mostly it's just music that somehow feels right at the time! 7y

This may be me reading too much into the book (since it was Woolf‘s last before her suicide), but it felt like the most hopeless of her works. Usually, her characters are discouraged but find hope for the future somewhere. But in this, the revelations were dismissed or determined not enough to make a difference. I found Between the Acts to be a beautiful, fascinating reflection on parts we play in life and for whom we play them. #travellingbook
