8 years later....

I'm still just a captivated and enthralled as the first time.
I love the subtle sarcasm and humour, it doesn't fail to bring a smile to my face every time.

Going on an adventure with Geralt is quickly becoming one of my favourite escapisms.
Killing monsters, breaking curses, and sharing it all with some good friends.

My only complaint is that these stories is too short.

Enchanted_Bibliophile I first read this collection of stories way back in 2016 when I was playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and wanted to know a bit more about Geralt and co. 2mo

I read and listened to this one. I got a bit confused switching time periods but loved the adventure and the wit. Since this was translated from Polish I can‘t help but wonder how many jokes I missed that just don‘t translate into English, my guess would be a fair amount.

1. The tagged book, which is the 1st in The Witcher series.
2. If you go on just reading continuously, I‘ve done a 48hr Dewey‘s Readathon a few times. If it‘s just one book, it took me 22hrs to read the last book of The Wheel Of Time, A Memory Of Light, when it was first released.
3. My children, my grandchildren, my husband. Then my library!

I thoroughly enjoyed the pace, dialogue and descriptors used. It was easy to follow and easier to appreciate Geralt‘s character. I love Geralt and Dandelion‘s relationship. I am slightly disappointed they changed Jaskier to Dandelion but I understand the translation reasoning. My interest was held from start to finish and I‘m very excited to dig further into the series.

Bk1 of #JumpStart2023 is done! This is officially the 1st book in the Witcher, though it‘s more an anthology of short stories about Geralt the 1st seasons of the tv series have been based on. While it doesn‘t have the same charisma as Henry Cavills Geralt(the man says more with a hmm than Shakespeare could!)it‘s still a great intro to that world. #BookspinBingo #Bookspin #FourFoursIn23 #ArmourCharmer #NoShameReadathonChallenge2023 #SeriesLove2023

I came to this after watching the Netflix series, and... I like everything about how the series did it more than the book. This is a series of short stories which are mildly connected, and the series pulled in content from later books to give them more context & continuity which I think they needed.

It's not bad, just the TV series managed to keep everything that felt important about the book, while adding more context. Can't often say that.

“He felt her hair, smelling of lilac and gooseberries, brush his face and he suddenly knew that he‘d never forget that scent, that soft touch, knew that he‘d never be able to compare it to any other scent or touch. Yennefer kissed him and he understood that he‘d never desire any lips other than hers, so soft and moist, sweet with lipstick. He knew that, from that moment, only she would exist.”

Really good stories of Geralt the Witcher or monster killer in a magical world. I haven't played the video game or seen the series, but it is good reading if you like swords & sorcery.

When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are. They feel better then. They find it easier to live.”

Finally found a moment to post my March roundup.

Still enjoying old Harlan Coben books.
Adam Grant was interesting & a nice change of pace.

I loved The Final Girl Support Group, but didn't like the narrator.

Absolutely loved A Beginning at the End though the subject was emotional after the last two years.

And the Witcher... I've become completely obsessed - show, games, and books. Can't wait to binge the rest.

Maybe not the best book to start the series with - as I would have preferred a more cohesive novel than a disjointed collection of stories. The show is better. However, I‘ll read blood of elves next and get back to you!

It‘s ok! It‘s not Game of Thrones or Harry Potter fantasy. It‘s average fantasy. A few too many times we are introduced to ideas or characters too quickly, making it confusing. Multiple times I checked to see if this was the first book. Still, glad to have read it and will have book 2 a try (but I‘ll be less forgiving).

⭐⭐⭐
Loved the stories (and I knew them from the tv show) but I didn't like the writing style, it's too flat and monotone for me.
I'll keep reading the series, because I want to know more of Geralt, Yennefer and all the others.

Awesome!! Reading this series because I saw the Netflix show. The book is just as confusing as the show with so many names and places unexplained. I need a map and family trees. Other than that, it was very exciting. The show captured the characters‘ personalities very well. The connection to some fairy tales was cool. Yennefer is introduced in the last story. It‘s told in several stories connected between each by a present-day visit to a temple.

There are so many references to fairy tales in The Witcher that they don‘t even mention in the Netflix show! Like Beauty and the Beast with Nivellen (but darker with his lady Vereena is a bruxa) and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with Aridea and her “mutant” stepdaughter Renfri/ Shrite.

Geralt is merciless assassin who‘s targets are the multifarious monsters and vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent. He wanders the country continuously seeking new assignments.
All the stories in the book are real page-turners. They are all different, the plots are easy to follow which keep the readers engaged.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to the Witcher. Really looking forward to starting the second one.

My penultimate pick for #12booksof2021 (November) is The Last Wish.

Dark fairytale retellings at their finest, full of folk lore, monsters and witchering. As a big fan of the videogames, this was irresistible.

Also, somebody posted asking which literary character we'd kiss on NYE... mine would be Geralt of Rivia 😅😘 Just saying.

My kids aren't allowed to touch it 🤣🤣 I played Witcher years ago on the Playstation and loved it. The new season gave me the itch to get into it again. I almost forgot ho lw fun it is! 3y

Bailedbailed

Its a hard bail for me...I hated how it was like short stories put together... When we got to the princess whom lost her kingdom because a man raped her, I bailed! I should've started with the blood of elves. Since I have the first 3 witcher books, I will try book one.

ChaoticMissAdventures I don't blame you, I am beyond ready for the end of rape as a plot device. 3y
