The Bodleian notecards are hysterical (those book titles!) and thank you for what is now my new favorite bookmark. I randomly found this book at the library and fell in love with it. That‘s something I miss doing..

This is a dark historical mystery. Set in the 1850: in Edinburgh. Jem is an apothecary and living as a man. They are tearing down the old St Saviour‘s Infirmary and hire an architect that becomes Jem‘s friend. They get into mischief/trouble trying to ferret out the truth.

1. It was rainy and cloudy this morning about 50°F. This afternoon it got sunny and a high of 56°F
2. I‘m really enjoying seeing Tulips bloom on my walk. I may have to plant some in my yard.
3. I think I recommend the tag series a lot. It‘s a great dark historical mystery series.

Only discovering this book through Litsy blurbs I felt that it may be an interesting read. Without a doubt this is the best book that I have read in 2018. Sad in places, a little slow in the middle, exciting in the most and a little gory in some areas for a debut novel or an accomplished writer this is a book they should be proud of. I'm sure E. S. Thomson will become known as a great author.

Just started to read this book and on page two it mentions Clare St, Bristol and I couldn't think why I recognised the name. A check on Google maps revealed that it was a street I would go to to use a Cash Dispenser (ATM). At the time these machines were few and far between and would always be running out of money. The one in Clare Street was a few miles from home but because it was on a main bank it never ran out of cash.

I really enjoyed this Victorian mystery and makes me ever so grateful for modern sanitation! There was some seemingly out-of-era feminism and unnecessary (for the love god why?) romance, but it wasn‘t too distracting. I started this when I desperately needed something entertaining to relax my brain in bed at night and it fit the bill. I‘ll be trying the next in the series.

Thanks to a Litten whom I can‘t recall now, I picked up this Victorian mystery and am loving it!

I picked ES Thomson. She writes the Jen Flockhart series! Which I love!

Apparently she doesn‘t do any interviews under this name because NOTHING popped up! So I just took her “what she‘s been reading” from her website. Some of those look good!

Afternoon reading: A Victorian crime novel set in a crumbling 1850s London infirmary?! How have I not already read this series??? ♥️🔪☠️

I forgot to post my #bookhaul from my trip this weekend. The pile on the left is from Books Inc. And the pile on the right is from Half Price Books.

The Goodnight Stories is the first book I have bought my twins. I can't wait to buy them more books. I had so much fun looking in the children's books.

Good plot, intriguing mystery, interesting characters, and some of the best atmospheric writing I‘ve ever come across. Can‘t wait to get my hands on the second one.

I almost bailed a couple of times on this almost 400 page historical mystery. Very dark, both in the setting of an old, soon-to-be-demolished infirmary in 1850s London and in some of the subject matter, it really didn‘t take off for me until halfway through the book. I did end up being absorbed by the macabre plot and interesting characters. Highly descriptive of a filthy, desperate time and place...London becomes a character of its own. 4/5⭐️

I have finally finished Beloved Poison (I loved it btw, it was just finding time). Now I have went through my TBR pile and I have short listed 7 🤔🤔🤔 Which book would you pick? #helpagalout #majorlifedecisions

Does anyone else procrastinate when it comes to reading? My reading goes through waves. One minute I can‘t leave the book down and the next I don‘t want to touch it. I must be reading this book for 3-4 weeks. By no means is this a reflection of the book because once I start I find it hard to stop. #isitjustme

It took a few restarts but I have finally been able to immerse my self in 19th century London. Just what I needed for a weekend car trip. 5 hours in a car will definitely help my TBR pile. #jemflockhart #greatexcuse

Just a chapter or two before work 📚 I‘m trying to minimise my TBR pile... I have a haul coming this week from The Book People and a Cancer Research sale (which is always a dangerous place to go 🙈)

The solution was somewhat signposted, but lord, what an atmosphere Thomson creates in the grounds of St Saviours hospital. I loved Jem as a main character too, a nice lens through which to explore Victorian London as a woman in a man's guise. Clever stuff, looking forward to the next one.

Another crafty period mystery. This atmospheric historical novel is set in a dilapidated hospital at a time when medicine was more of an art than a science. When a cutting edge Doctor is found poisoned, the apprentice pharmacist must battle her own secrets to discover the murderer.

This month's #bookmail included two rad-sounding historical mysteries. Félicette can't wait to learn their secrets by rubbing her face all over them. #catsoflitsy

I bailed on this one around the 120 page mark. I was more interested in the mystery promised on the back cover than the bickering doctors. I think those doctors play an important role later on, but it was taking too long to get there for me. I might pick this back up at some time, but there are far too many other exciting reads in my current TBR stack!!

I went into this one with some reservations because it really didn't sound like my cup of tea. Colour me pleasantly surprised, though; this was a great read! Beautifully written with a fantastic MC, a whole lot of atmosphere and so much historical detail. Really, really good 😊
