Modern Classics Dont Look Now and Other Stories
Modern Classics Dont Look Now and Other Stories | Maurier Daphne Du
17 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
Collecting five stories of suspense, mystery and slow, creeping horror, Daphne Du Maurier's Don't Look Now and Other Stories includes an introduction by Susan Hill, author of The Woman in Black, in Penguin Modern Classics. John and Laura have come to Venice to try and escape the pain of their young daughter's death. But when they encounter two old women who claim to have second sight, they find that instead of laying their ghosts to rest they become caught up in a train of increasingly strange and violent events. The four other haunting, evocative stories in this volume also explore deep fears and longings, secrets and desires: 'Not After Midnight', in which a lonely teacher investigates a mysterious American couple; 'A Border Line Case', in which a young woman confronts her father's past and his associations with the IRA; 'The Way of the Cross', in which a party of pilgrims to Jerusalem encounter strange phenomena in the Garden of Gethsemane; and 'The Breakthrough', in which a scientist claims to be able to trap the soul at the point of death ... Daphne du Maurier (1907-89) - English novelist, biographer, and playwright, who published romantic suspense novels, mostly set on the coast of Cornwall. Du Maurier is best known for and Jamaica Inn (1936), filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1939, Rebecca (1938), filmed by Hitchcock in 1940, and The Birds (1952), filmed by Hitchcock in 1963. If you enjoyed Don't Look Now and Other Stories, you might like Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

There is a feeling of deja vu about this collection of stories. Maybe I have read some before ... maybe not , adds to the intrigue ... very good.
Next story : A Borderline Case !
Excellent writing ...

This collection was amazing - even the weakest story was one I could not put down. Definitely will be reading more du Maurier.

Not sure how faithful it is to the story, but Don't Look Now is a great 1970s arthouse horror flick.

Did a little #retailtherapy after book club last night and went slightly overboard, maybe. In my defense the art of the novella series are kinda hard to find so when I see them I snatch them up... and the other 2 books were on BookPeople‘s final sale (half off) shelf because they have minor (like almost nonexistent) imperfections. 😅 #bookhaul #amnowonanotherbookbuyingban #letsseehowlongthatlasts

BookishTrish Who publishes those beauties? 6y
writerlibrarian I can see why this novella series is irresistible. They are quite lovely edition. 💜 6y

RealBooks4ever Ooooo, Killers of The Flower Moon is SO GOOD! 💜 You certainly know what you‘re reading with those novella covers - no confusing graphics hiding the title or author! 😆 6y

Just purchased! I have loved Rebecca forever, and I loved My Cousin Rachel, which I read this summer. I have read a couple of Du Maurier's short stories, and I am excited to read some more in this collection.

• Ahhh! That awful stressful time when your entire TBR has lost your interest and you want to order all new books... 🤦🏼‍♀️ Does anyone else get that? This is the worst thing for me and 9/10 I actually end up doing just that. ✨ #booklover #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookblogger #bibliophile #bookishfeatures #met_createchange

Just finished listening to Peter Capaldi's narration of Don't Look Now. AMAZING. So well structured and brilliantly told.

saresmoore I'm sorry, WHAT?! Now there's an audiobook I can't resist! 7y
rabbitprincess @saresmoore I found it through Overdrive, so if your library uses that system, check if they have it. It may also be on Audible. 7y
