The Younger Wife
The Younger Wife | Sally Hepworth
Stephen Aston is getting married again. The only problem is, he's still married to his first wife. She is in a care facility for dementia, but he'll take care of that easily by divorcing her - even if his adult daughters protest. Tully and Rachel Aston look upon Heather as nothing but an interloper. Heather is the same age as Rachel and even younger than Tully. Clearly she's a golddigger and after their father's money. However, Heather has secrets that she's keeping close, and reasons of her own for wanting to marry Stephen. With their mother unable to speak for herself, Tully and Rachel are determined to get to the truth about their family's secrets, the new wife closing in, and who their father really is. But will getting to the truth unleash the most dangerous impulses . . . in all of them? **************************************************** Praise for Sally Hepworth: 'Women's fiction at its finest' LIANE MORIARTY 'Clever, chilling and beautifully crafted' ADELE PARKS 'The characters are so beautifully drawn and it was an emotional read, but I couldn't put it down' HEIDI PARKS 'Sally demonstrates that you don't need outlandish situations and monstrous characters to write a thoroughly engrossing, suspenseful thriller, and her writing feels so effortless' EMMA CURTIS 'It's not often that such a gripping page-turner can be so moving' SARAH NAUGHTON 'Cleverly plotted and completely compelling' NICOLA MORIARTY

My interest never waned with this one. Family dynamics, real life, drama, and murder, combined for a solid read!!! Love how she goes back and forth between characters so you get the full perspective and that each character has some personal redemption and success by the end. What Sally will I read next?!

This one kept my interest the whole way through. Hepworth's style is similar to Lianne Moriarty, and Lisa Jewell, switching back and forth between characters throughout. The different perspectives keep you guessing about the reality of what is happening.

All in with 2 Hepworths on my loans shelf, this, and The Mother-in-Law. If either of them is half as good as The Good Sister, I'll be very content 😌

I liked this book. A younger woman was engaged to an older man. The problem was that he was still married to his wife who was in a nursing home due to her dementia. His daughters thought that she was moving in on him for his money. As the story progressed he was found to be a spouse abuser. He was able to hide it very well and no one could believe he would do such a thing. The woman and his daughters tried to get to the bottom of the mystery.

I could not put this down! I‘ve read maybe 3 books by this author before and so I picked this one up on a whim at the library today. I started reading it before leaving the building, came home, and finished it! This might be my favorite of hers- great plotting and timing, refreshingly flawed and relatable characters, and an original central story. Highly recommend!!

3-27-23: My 33rd finished book of 2023! Tully and Rachel Aston are sisters with some long standing issues they‘ve never dealt with. Their father, Stephen, a heart surgeon has decided to remarry now that his first wife has been diagnosed with dementia and sent to a special home. Enter Heather, the younger woman who has stolen Stephen‘s heart. Her background is less than desirable she second guesses herself a lot. All the women do, until they don‘t.

This was a lot — especially after watching The Luckiest Girl Alive. But, it also felt appropriate. I appreciated the comprehensive character development. I felt so invested in this story because I cared about the people.

This book gave me Liane Moriarty storytelling vibes from the very beginning, and for me that‘s a good thing. To add to that vibe one narrator of the audiobook, Caroline Lee, also narrates Liane‘s book. It was a fun, quick read and I hate to say more less I drop a spoiler.

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. Another great read from Sally Hepworth. A first wife, a new fiance and a husband and who seems to be so perfect until things start unraveling. A compelling read that I couldn't put down. A thriller that satisfied my need for unexpected twists. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #sallyhepworth #theyoungerwife #goodreads #litsy #thestorygraph #tea_sipping_bookworm #thriller #bookqueen #bookstagram

The first half read more contemporary than suspense. When the suspense was added, it was pretty good, but the ending was rushed to the point of being nonsensical.

Steven‘s wife has dementia and is in a care home, but he has found love again with Heather, an interior designer who is the same age as his adult daughters. Tully and Rachel are not pleased their dad is divorcing mum to be with Heather. But does Steven have an even darker side?

Cinfhen Potential #BorrowNotBuy - but I really HATE nonsensical 😤 2y

This one was good…not great but good. I disliked the dad - the man marrying a much younger woman after divorcing his wife with Alzheimer‘s- from the very beginning but found the issues surrounding the various women intriguing. Did not like the ending and found the resolution pretty shitty (if you‘ve read it you‘ll know what I‘m talking about). But overall I enjoyed the short chapters and thought the narrator was good. And beautiful cover! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is a tough one for me. I really like Sally Hepworth & I enjoyed this novel... Until I got to the end. The ending had me wanting to throw the book. Otherwise, classic Hepworth with well-developed, relatable characters & engrossing family drama. I enjoy the suspense & humor she brings to her books. ⭐⭐⭐💫 Stars because the ending was so upsetting.

Hepworth has definitely become an auto-read author for me. Here, she sets up a family situation that seems quite solid but then slowly starts to reveal that maybe things aren‘t how they look. Really deft writing along the lines of Liane Moriarty. Great read!

I‘ve enjoyed Hepworth‘s novels, so I was excited to dive into her latest! As usual, her characters come to life. The book opens with a wedding that ends in tragedy-& circles to different perspectives to build that day up. Stephen is remarrying- though his two adult daughters don‘t exactly support his decision despite understanding it in the wake of their mother‘s debilitating diagnosis. It‘s easy to keep turning pages in this unsettling read!

I enjoyed this book, but admit I will be puzzling over the ending for a while. This book is about family, marriage, and secrets. There is a lot being said about the book portraying abuse victims as being crazy, but I think that is the point of the book...that some abusers can mess up their victims so much that they in fact do not trust their own judgment about has happened to them. I gave it 4/5 stars.

I was 100% insulted by this book as a female reader. Women are not magnanimously stupid so please stop writing them as such. Here‘s my chief review point, spoiler be damned: the author portrays not 1 but 2 women who suffer physical abuse who then convince themselves they aren‘t abused, in favor of them being… “drunk” and/or “crazy.” Yup. I really just read that. In 2022. Full review ScrappyMags.com

The Younger Wife was such a page-turner for me, as I desperately wanted to know the truth about Stephen and the members of his family. The events are seen through the eyes of multiple characters, which brings with it many perspectives that ultimately come together so well in the end. I loved the mysteries and questions surrounding this family and the ways in which they overcame many of the challenges they faced.

What a book!!! People are not always who you think they are and it takes a discerning mind to truly know a person in the kind of world we live in.

BTW this is my first time reading @SallyHepworth and I'm blown away by the way she writes.

ScrappyMags I was infuriated at this book and how it portrayed domestic abuse. Couldn‘t believe this was even published. 2y

FULL REVIEW 4/5.

The Ashton family has enough problems, and now their father has a young girlfriend, Heather, who he is going to marry.

What is he doing? Their mother is still living and is in a home for dementia patients?

The book starts out with the wedding and then a scream. What happened?

Lots of twists, secrets, lies, and lots of drama.

This is another engaging, thoughtful read by Sally Hepworth.  4/5
