The Forgotten Dead
The Forgotten Dead | Jordan L. Hawk
12 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
Parapsychologist Dr. Nigel Taylor doesn’t work with psychic mediums. Until, that is, a round of budget cuts threatens his job and an eccentric old woman offers him a great deal of grant money. The only catch: he must investigate a haunted house with a man she believes to have a true gift.
Oscar Fox, founder of the ghost-hunting team OutFoxing the Paranormal, has spent his life ignoring the same sort of hallucinations that sent his grandmother to an insane asylum. When he agrees to work with the prestigious—and sexy—Dr. Taylor, he knows he’ll have to keep his visions under wraps, so his team can get a desperately needed pay day.
Soon after Nigel, Oscar, and the OtP team arrive at the house, the questions begin to pile up. Why is there a blood stain in the upstairs hallway? What tragedy took place in the basement? And who is the spirit lurking in the closet of a child’s bedroom?
One thing is certain: if Oscar can’t accept the truth about his psychic abilities, and Nigel can’t face the demons of his past, they’ll join the forgotten souls of the house…forever.

To keep the funding he needs to continue his paranormal research, Nigel is willing to work w/ a genuine medium & investigate a house he may have deeper connections to.

This was a perfect Halloween read. Spooky ghosts, great banter w/ a fun team of characters, & a seance that can‘t possibly go wrong. The romance proceeded a little quickly for me, but I was enamored w/ the whole cast & intrigued by the hints of backstory. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Bookish song Nr. 63: Patent Pending - Brighter

I might hyperfocus a bit too much on this series, but whatever. I have a song for Oscar and Nigel, though.

So, maybe I loved this so much, that after finishing this book I immediately went and bought volume 2. I maybe did something I almost never do - continuing a series right after finishing one volume. Maybe I have gotten to love Oscar and Nigel so much, that I just couldn't stand the thought of not spending some time with them every morning. Maybe, right?

willaful Oh, I haven't read those so I didn't notice! 4w
PuddleJumper @willaful It's a similar idea - medium and a scientist and haunted houses. It's 1900s maybe. There were some nice throwbacks to inventions and ideas that were in those books. I wonder if it's the same universe 4w
Faranae @willaful I need to give that series another try myself. One of the MCs acts kind of transphobically in the first book, and gets better about it, but it hit different before Hawk came out as trans and I think I could read it with more generosity now. 4w
GHABI4ROSES I am here doing our annual but quietly with my schedule. Working on finishing your list from last year and thanks for being around for us👑 3w

Reread this in order to refresh my memory for the third book -- obviously I'll need to reread the second book too.

Nigel and Oscar's budding relationship is so cute, and I enjoy both their characters a lot. Found myself wishing for a bit more about the supporting characters, though!

shanaqui And some words found for the #HauntedShelf word finder:

- autumnal
- warmth
- creep
- skin
- friend
- home
- temptation
- feast
- cool

I do not have a curated TBR for October. I'm too much of a mood reader, and my TBR has grown to 1059 on StoryGraph alone (I have a different TBR on OpenLibrary...). I've started two long reads for my stream, and I'm pretty sure the two short books are going to end up in October. I'll be re-reading Jordan L Hawk for spooky reads, though!

@PuddleJumper 's #HauntedShelf will be here in only a month! Join us!

PuddleJumper Jordan L Hawk's spooky books have been recced several times. Great to see an author getting more recognition 2mo
Faranae @PuddleJumper I'm very pleased, I've been reading his books for years and it's nice to see more people reading them! 😍 2mo
Kenyazero Your TBR style sounds like mine 🤭 it makes finding your next book easy, but describing your TBD quite difficult! 2mo

Recommending this for @PuddleJumper's #HauntedShelf (sign up: https://forms.gle/wmcY27wyx6awp3EfA).

I'll probably be reading the third book in the series, Into the Dark, assuming I don't accidentally read it in September. Some spookiness, also some cute romance.

PuddleJumper This is on my October TBR. I'm looking forward to it 2mo
willaful I'm also planning to read the third in October. 2mo

Well, this haunted house story really curled my -- admittedly very wimpy -- hair! AND made me cry, to add insult to injury. 😂 There's also a charming romance. Will definitely read the sequel... in the daytime.

I finished the prompt maze! (After going around in circles once or twice.)

For my #HauntedShelf #LetsGoPoints book rec, I just HAVE to get folks to read this horror romance by one of my faves Jordan L. Hawk. It's genuinely creepy (and for me, scary because I'm not much for horror) despite knowing there's a HEA. For the bingo boarders, you get: a gay trans man, a former defensive tackle love interest, ghosts, a seance, haunted houses, a taste of dark academia, and the rest is spoilers sorry! @PuddleJumper Team #Flerken

PuddleJumper I've not heard of this one! I really enjoyed their ghost series (can't remember the name) I'm going to look this one up. Thanks! 13mo
Faranae @PuddleJumper You won\'t regret it! He\'s got two (well, now three) ghost series, and recently switched to he/him. This is one of two new series he\'s been writing. They both have sequels. I\'ve read Rattling Bone, and it was really good, but not yes Lion\'s Tail (sequel to Blind Tiger, which is in the Hex World setting). 13mo

I tore through this one, and found it genuinely creepy at times -- more because of the backstory than the current events, I think. Oscar and Nigel are cute, though clearly there's a ways to go in their relationship.
