Old Books, Rare Friends
Old Books, Rare Friends: Two Literary Sleuths and Their Shared Passion | Madeline B. Stern, Leona Rostenberg
16 posts | 3 read | 20 to read
Louisa May Alcott once wrote that she had taken her pen for a bridegroom. Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern, friends and business partners for fifty years, have in many ways taken up their pens and passion for literature much in the same way. The "Holmes & Watson" of the rare book business, Rostenberg and Stern are renowned for unlocking the hidden secret of Louisa May Alcott's life when they discovered her pseudonym, A.M. Barnard, along with her anonymously published "blood and thunder" stories on subjects like transvestitism, hashish smoking, and feminism. Old Books, Rare Friends describes their mutual passion for books and literary sleuthing as they take us on their earliest European book buying jaunts. Using what they call Finger-spitzengefhl, the art of evaluating antiquarian books by handling, experience, and instinct, we are treated to some of their greatest discoveries amid the mildewed basements of London's booksellers after the Blitz. We experience the thrill of finding one of the earliest known books printed in America between 1617-1619 by the Pilgrim Press and learn about the influential role of publisher-printers from the fifteenth century. Like a precious gem, Old Books, Rare Friends is a book to treasure about the companionship of two rare friends and their shared passion for old books.

Books. Friends. Relationships built around a love of books. That‘s what Litsy means to me. I know Litfluence is just a number, but this one jumped out at me. The last almost 3 years have been special because so many of you have become part of my life and my family. I love you all 😘

Linsy Lovely! I read As I Lay Dying in high school and just thought: What the heck? This is so depressing and confusing! I reread it in college and loved it! I also got a lot more out of it, lol. What a collection! 7y

I love old books, especially when I can justify my purchases as research. Here‘s one of my latest, picked up on a trip to Boston. It‘s full of illustrations of the region that is the setting for the book I‘m currently writing. The binding is so beautiful, even if a little worn. #rarebooks

Did some use bookstore browsing today and found this: Bookends: Two Women, One Enduring Friendship. (Not in database.) It's a sequel to Old Books, Rare Friends. Anyone read these? They're about women who worked in the rare book business. Thought it might be a bit like 84, Charing Cross Rd.
Cover is very faint. Resorted to the bathroom for decent light. 😐

CherylDeFranceschi ❤️Looks like a brilliant find! 8y
merelybookish Yes. I thought so, too. And it wasnt an awesome bookstore so it really stood out. 😊 8y

Just curious. What were you favorite books from the 80s and 90s? Authors? Book covers?

Here's my author collaboration choice; a story of an amazing, lifelong friendship between two antiquarian book dealers and scholars. They were the discoverers of Louisa May Alcott's pseudonym, under which she wrote her "sensational" tales. #augustofpages #bookphotochallenge @TheSpinecrackersBookClub #booksaboutbooks
