NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES ANDBUZZFEED Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martins ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, nave but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivalsin stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Eggwhose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isnt deadyet.Praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Readers who already love Martin and his ability to bring visceral human drama out of any story will be thrilled to find this trilogy brought together and injected with extra life.Booklist The real reason to check out this collection is that its simply great storytelling. Martin crafts a living, breathing world in a way few authors can. . . . [Giannis illustrations] really bring the events of the novellas to life in beautiful fashion.Tech TimesFrom the Hardcover edition.

We follow Sir Duncan the Tall, otherwise known as Dunk, a hedge knight in Westeros. You don‘t need to read Game of Thrones or Fire and Blood to enjoy, but it is fun to get the kernels of knowledge from each of them. The story is told through 3 short stories, each started out show but in typical GRRM fashion really picked up and are exciting by the end. My favorite part though was the relationship between Dunk and Egg. Read for #readingwesteros

Still en route to the North, Dunk is invited to a joust at Whitewalls with a wedding feast where they can fill their bellies &have the chance to win a dragon‘s egg by a traveler known as “the Fiddler”

After the feast, Dunk helps carry the bride to her bedding, thinking of Tanselle. He looks upon the dragons egg. The Fiddler follows him &tells of a prophetic dream where Dunk is on the kingsguard & that a dragon will hatch HERE..

5feet.of.fury Dunk registers as a Mystery Knight, & is unhorsed in 1st round by Ser Uthor. Egg suggests that they make for Summerhall, Dunk can work for his father. But Dunk won‘t go penniless &beaten, he thinks of parting ways. 2d
5feet.of.fury Dunk finds out Uthor was paid to hit him in the head. He cant find Egg. Dunk realizes the Fiddler has the same eyes as Egg, another black dragon.

A traitors tourney, the wedding a perfect excuse for likeminded lords.
2d
See All 12 Comments
5feet.of.fury The dragon egg is stolen, Fireball‘s son Glendon blamed. The Fiddler is named Daemon after his father the Blackfyre Dragon. Egg is in the sept. Captured after trying to use his boot. Dunk comes to his rescue. Lord Butterwell comes clean, Egg told them he was sent as a spy &Maekar‘s army is coming. 2d
5feet.of.fury Dunk confronts Daemon who has been somewhat unaware of Peake‘s interference and orders Glendon freed to face him. Daemon uses a war lance, Glendon a longer tourney lance as Dunk had done at Ashford Meadow. Daemon is defeated.

An army arrives, lead by the Bloodraven Brynden Rivers. Daemon has no support, the traitors shaken. he challenges the Bloodraven to single combat. But he‘s captured.
2d
5feet.of.fury
Dunk is called before Bloodraven. He and Egg are free to continue their travels. The dragon‘s egg is not recovered, presumably taken by a dwarf.
2d
5feet.of.fury I liked this Egg is starting to be tired of roughing it, wants to use his name as leverage (which worked out when he did this time) shows what kind of leader he will be as someone who really knows his people from his travels. 2d
5feet.of.fury Lots of material for F&B2 with the Black Dragon backstory. 2d
Sargar114 Much like the other stories, this one started slow but then really picked up. I liked how the tidbits from the other stories played into this one. I really enjoyed the relationship between Dunk and Egg. 2d
BookwormAHN I really liked this one but a part 2 where they went after the dwarf and the dragon egg would have been nice. 1d
5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN agree! But like everything else Westeros, there is supposed to be more but there‘s not. 1d
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 agree, I like the callback to the 1st tourney! 1d

I enjoyed it. Something to want more of that I don‘t know if we‘ll see, but all the Targaryen lore taking place after Fire & Blood (with a couple callbacks) gives me hope. Short stories aren‘t my fave but there was enough character development to keep it interesting. I‘m excited for the adaptation! #readingwesteros

While on a task for Ser Eustace Osgrey, Dunk finds the stream has dried up, a dam has been built by “The Red Widow.” A brief altercation follows where Eustace‘s man Ser Bennis draws blood against a man at the dam. Ser Eustace wants to fight so they train some villagers. Egg has kept his secret for more than a year & a half but now want to use it for leverage. They go to treat with her & see the water has been used for her moat
Summary cont‘d below

5feet.of.fury The Red Widow explains that the water was decreed to her by King Daeron, Eustace was a traitor supporting Daemon in the Blackfyre rebellion. She wants to keep the water & take revenge on Bennis for cutting her man. He gives Ser Eustace the terms. The dam still up & the fields now on fire.

Not wanting harm to come to the villagers turned would be warriors. Dunk shows The Red Widow “a ring he found in a boot” & makes implications about Egg.
1w
5feet.of.fury She doesn‘t accept Dunk cutting his own cheek as repayment, trial by combat with Ser Lucas ensues. Dunk prevails, but almost drowns. While unconscious The Red Widow & Eustace reconcile & the 2 marry. 1w
See All 14 Comments
5feet.of.fury I didn‘t like this 1 as much, too much back & forth; there was less connection to the other Westeros. I liked the Red Widow, but the resolution seemed quick and strange. 1w
5feet.of.fury Dunk‘s heritage being questioned again makes me wonder if there‘s something there, but I have no theories. 1w
BookwormAHN I also thought it wrapped up too quickly and the Red Widow fleshed out more could have been an amazing character. 1w
5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN right? I like that she showed up in her archery gear and was kind of sassy… the random marriage had me confused. 1w
BethM I‘m having a hard time@connecting to this one. Not surprising I guess as I tend not to be a short story kind of girl. 7d
5feet.of.fury @BethM agree, not my favorite format. 7d
Sargar114 Small correction: she did accept Dunk cutting his own face, but they fought because Eustace would not withdraw the accusation that she set fire to the woods and so she demanded a trial by combat. 7d
Sargar114 I‘m really enjoying this one overall. I agree this story wasn‘t as good as the first but I like how Dunk is being developed as a character. I also enjoy seeing the relationship between Dunk and Egg. @BookwormAHN I agree, would be really interesting to read more about the Red Widow. The marriage to Eustace was weird, but maybe she figured it was the best chance to keep Dunk around and minimize conflict in the region 🤷🏼‍♀️ 7d
Sargar114 @BethM I‘m normally not a short story girl either but I think because these ones are part of a bigger story it‘s working for me. I‘d be interested in an anthology of random people all over Westeros. 7d
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 that is true! I forgot about the dispute over the fire. Was there anything else about that or everyone just let it go? 7d
Sargar114 It seems like after the trial by combat they were settled. I just had an interesting thought that technically both died so does that confirm that neither side set it? 6d

The Hedge Knight

Our story starts with Dunk digging a grave for his mentor Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Dunk proceeds on with Ser Arlan‘s sword & shield to a tourney. He stops at an Inn & a stable boy, Egg, follows him hoping to be his squire

While at the tourney he runs afoul of some Targaryen drama and Egg has a surprise defense

5feet.of.fury Dunk finds himself in a Trial by Seven against his accusers Maekor & Aerion. He finds others to fight by his side, including the heir apparent Prince Baelor.

Dunk‘s side wins. Baelor perishes shortly after the melee, Dunk makes him a vow. Maekor & Dunk both feel the guilt. Dunk wonders how his foot can be more important than the life of the Prince. Intending to prove the realm needs his foot, he will travel with Egg as his squire.

5feet.of.fury -the Ser Arlan has seen the last dragon (Laena‘s Dragon born on Driftmark under Aegon III -last chapter of Fire & Blood)

-of course his name is Aegon 😂

-“MY BROTHER AEMON NAMED ME EGG, HE‘S AT THE CITADEL”
2w
5feet.of.fury Did you enjoy it? What did you think of our new characters? - I enjoyed the 1st story, I though Egg‘s reveal for being so few pages was well done! 2w
Sargar114 I really enjoyed this story! It started out slow but agree, Egg‘s reveal was so well done and from that point on, I couldn‘t put it down. I caught that reference to Aemon. (edited) 2w
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 I have thoughts about Aegon‘s future, but I‘m trying not to spoiler myself with the wiki before the end! But I remembered Maester Aemon‘s “Egg, I dreamed I was old” to Sam from when they were traveling from the Wall 2w
BethM Do you think it‘s connected? I think this said it was what 100 yrs before ice and fire? I agree it started slow but got better. I keep trying to figure out whose kids they are from the end of fire and blood. 2w
5feet.of.fury @BethM I think most of the Targaryen lore we‘re getting here will be F&B volume 2 (if when there‘s a volume 2) although they did mention Aegon III and the last dragon and that the old man remembered it, so it seems smack in the middle of the 2 series might get some allusions to historical events referenced in GoT. 2w
Sargar114 Aemon was 100 years old or clearly older in GOT so I‘m pretty sure he‘s the one on the wall in GOT. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. GRRM has a way of spinning a tale! 2w

Ok, I know people are working on their December TBRs, & I think we have a couple people still making their way through Fire & Blood.. do we want to break until January? Plan for December? I heard this one is more light hearted & fun. Probably just do a weekly check in for each of the 3 novellas. Last official Westeros book! Lemme know what you think!

5-7 Apr 24 (audiobook)
Three novellas telling the travails of hedge knight, Dunk, and his squire, Egg around the Seven Kingdoms.
A welcome reminder that George RR Martin really is a very good storyteller and I enjoy the world he has created in the Fire and Ice series.
I expect the scope of these novellas is a welcome relief for the author in contrast to the original series which has become far too unwieldy. Both Dunk and Egg are lovely.

As Mr. Martin seems unlike to ever finish the game of thrones series, I read this one to fill the loss. It was good but not great, like his others. It lacked the character depth and plot details I expect from him. Allegedly this is only part one but we know how George is with sequels. Satisfied my need for a GoT update.

I had to read this twice because the first reading was so forgettable and I want to read the sequel. The second reading of this was only marginally better. The narrative is really boring, somehow you get through ⅓ of the book and nothing has happened. I was surprised considering how engaging the song of ice and fire novels are. Definitely not his best work.

Three stories about an unlikely Hedge Knight and his unlikely-er squire as they bumble about Westeros. Set a century before the GOT series and before Sir Duncan the Tall was a legendary Knight of the King‘s Guard. A quick and fun read. Too bad GRRM takes a lifetime to put out a new book because I‘d love to read more about this chivalrous duo.

The narrator was very good at giving all the characters distinct voices so it didn't feel like a dry reading. I know it‘s not “The Winds of Winter” but I really enjoyed these three novellas of Westeros. I got easily sucked in to the adventures of Dunk and Egg! “The Hedge Knight” was my favorite story.

I thought these hit the mark for the novella format in that they did not feel rushed or undeveloped to me.

As always, the Targaryen family tree is mind bending and I may have had to consult an actual family tree to try to keep them all straight 😂
