This was a #MoreMehThanYeah read.

Two timelines, one set in 1930s, one in 1880s.
Both about a Scottish woman taking care of their ailing fathers, both forced to work, one set mainly in Scotland the other mainly on the US east coast.

In 1930s, Emmie has come back to the UK from Australia, where she got a doctorate in botany and spent time discovering plants in jungles and deserts. ⬇️

#52bookclub24 - Published by Hachette

julesG On one of her trips to the tiny islands in the Pacific she encounters a shaman, who gives her a stuffed bird of paradise that a ghost left with him about 50 years ago. Now Emmie is supposed to work at a remote Scottish castle to classify the collection amassed there. But it turns out that job is a ruse, Emmie is supposed to help find a treasure and she has a key to it in her possession.
⬇️

julesG Emmie starts her treasure hunt and finds the diary of Hester, written 50 years ago. It tells how Hester grew up in the castle, then moved to the USA and then had to run for her life.

This book is not just a treasure hunt, but also a finding of identity. Because, it seems, no one involved in the story truly is who they pretend to be. (spoiler: it was rather obvious from the start) ⬇️
2mo
julesG Annoyingly, the 1880s timeline about the Scottish woman who grew up in the Scottish Highlands until she was 9/10 years old then moved to the US with her Scottish father was narrated by an American. Why? This child and later woman would retain some of her Scottish accent, especially since she lived rather isolated with her father for quite some time. It pulled me out of the story every time. 2mo
Librarybelle That‘s a disappointment! 2mo

An okay #RomCom about a fake relationship between a handsome grumpy vet and a sunshine "temp/queue-sitter". Set in New York City.

I've just imported my books from goodreads into SG. I have no idea really how to use it. Any tips for a new user? I'm planning on doing the trial month and then paying for the upgraded version if I like it enough. Suggestions on how to get the most out of the app would be appreciated...or if there's a good youtube or tiktok tutorial, I'd go for that as well. Thanks!!

Kimberlone Tracking your progress on your currently reading is pretty similar to Goodreads, so you will pick up on it quickly. IMO the biggest asset of Storygraph is the automatically created graphs and statistics about your reading. If you keep your reading up to date, you can see your changing stats all throughout the year and month to month. I don‘t have the paid sub, but one optional feature I use regularly are tags to track the origin of each book. 2mo
Traci1 @Kimberlone I used GR mostly because I tend to forget if I've read a book or not. But other than that, it's been severely lacking. I'm excited about all the statistics. 2mo
IndoorDame The stats are amazing! So are the ability to track readings challenges! 2mo

julesG The reading challenges are great, I agree! @IndoorDame Also buddy reads and readalongs. I've been using the free version of StoryGraph for some time now, I don't think I'm missing out on any features. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame @julesG which reading challenges are you doing? I was thinking about doing one of the tackle your tbr ones. 2mo
IndoorDame @Traci1 I have the same screename over there, so you can easily check out all my challenges. I use it to track all my Litsy challenges, and also my monthly poetry reading, and a TBR challenge I picked cause it‘s open ended and I want to read the things that have been on my shelves a while, so I‘m tracking that this year. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame thanks! I like the tbr one you're doing. Prompts are fun, but I need to whittle down my physical library, and they don't always coincide with that particularly well. 2mo
Traci1 @IndoorDame and my user name there is traci1974. 2mo
julesG Same @ on SG, too. I'm doing the #BookChain24 and #52bookclub24 challenges at the moment. 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m @ sharnibee on StoryGraph. I‘m on a mission to whittle down my physical library too - I‘ve just discovered the function to create your own challenges - so I‘ve made one to (hopefully) keep me on track to actually finish the Obernewtyn Chronicles this year. Love the pie graphs! 2mo

#SeriesLove2024 @TheSpineView @Andrew65

Not sure who recommended this to me, a listoholic, but I thank the Litten who did it.?

This was fun, although, as always, I had an idea of what the MacGuffin was early on and where it was hidden. Also I knew who killed "Green Boots" and why and why (no, that is not a typo, read the book or listen to it to find out why ?). But I do read very carefully and pay attention to words and punctuation.

⬇️

julesG Audiobook was great! I can recommend it, although that means you're missing out on the lists. I paired audiobook and eBook. 3mo
julesG #BookChain24 @TheAromaofBooks - starts with a vowel (last book started with a consonant) 3mo
julesG #52bookclub24 - not saying which prompt because that's a clue to solve the mystery. 😜 3mo

Librarybelle I really liked this one and am currently listening to the follow up: 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I have this one stacked - it sounds so intriguing!! 3mo
julesG @Librarybelle I jumped into the second one right away, too. And although the train hasn't left the station yet, I'm already sad there is no third book. I really like Ernest. 3mo
TheSpineView awesome! 3mo
Crazeedi I'm definitely stacking!! 2mo

#BookChain24 @TheAromaofBooks

Thanks to this challenge I've eventually managed to read Wodehouse (I might have read him before in German translation, some of it seemed familiar, but that must have been 30+ years ago).

Now to find a book with less than 225pp. 😁

TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! Wodehouse always lifts my spirits!! 3mo
Tea_and_Starstuff An Elderly Lady is Up to No Good was such a....hm, I feel strange calling it a fun read but it was! Kinda. Lol. Dark fun. 3mo

#OokBOokClub #EpicBuddyread

Looking forward to our discussion next month!

I enjoyed the stories although some of them were familiar.

Can highly recommend pairing the book with the #audiobook.

#52bookclub24 - Buddyread
#BookChain24 - Next book's title has same colour(-ish) as last book's title

Experienced thief (24 y/o) from London rookery is engaged by a handsome earl to steal some papers from a duke. Obviously she has to live at his home where she has to learn to be an accomplished debutant. Now she only needs to catch the eye of the duke, steal the papers and collect her fee of £10.000.

Anachronistic dialogue. Historical inaccuracies. Insta-love. Explicit 🛌 scenes.

julesG @jenniferw88 - perfect candidate for the #52bookclub24, but I'll keep looking for one with "real" phobia 4mo

Another gem from the #AuldLangSpine list @rachelsbrittain put together.

I cannot say exactly why I liked this weird book about a temp who works in the strangest jobs: a shoe-shiner, on a pirate ship, opening doors, even as a human barnacle 😳

@monalyisha

monalyisha That does sound weird! 😅 4mo
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 4mo
rachelsbrittain I'm so glad you liked it! It's a super weird but that somehow still works! 4mo
