Rushworth is just another in a long line of tacky blowhards with no taste destroying much-loved places of natural beauty. "Ye fallen avenues, once more I mourn your fate unmerited." #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Man, this book is full of selfish, thoughtless people: sisters Bertram and Norris set Fanny off on an emotional roller coaster about her living situation without giving two shits; nobody cares that she doesn't have a horse, ie access to fresh air and exercise; Sir Thomas heads off for a year to his slave plantation; and Henry Crawford comes out the gate as a feckless, self-centered ass who won't house his own sister. Shades of behavior to come...

bookishbitch I just read an interesting article about this book today. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/books/review/jane-austen-mansfield-park.html 1h
Andrea313 @bookishbitch I really enjoyed this article! Mansfield Park is an odd one out among Austen's work but I've always really loved it. ❤️ 1h
bookishbitch @Andrea313 I love learning more about the context of her writing. I think it gives it more weight in a manner of speaking. 1h
Andrea313 @bookishbitch Yes, agree! I always appreciate articles like this one, and books about her writing. There's so much to uncover! 39m

#Pemberlittens I'm already behind on 2 Chapters a Day Readalong of Mansfield Park. Today is my grocery shopping day for 3 day holiday weekend house party. I'm firing up my audiobook read by the fabulous Juliet Stevenson and listening through Chapter 12. That will take me up to Sunday. Monday when things quiet down I go back to print.🛒 🎧 📖

TheBookHippie I‘m starting Monday with a massive catch up day 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ son had oral surgery and it‘s a bit chaotic here🙃 16h
Crinoline_Laphroaig Also the Mansfield Park selection on Litsy is sorely lacking. Need to get on my computer and add in my editions. 16h
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie no oral surgery here but still chaotic. 🤪 16h

kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Hope he is healing nicely! 16h
kspenmoll Mansfield park is one I have not read. Will try & catch up. 16h
Bookwormjillk I think I'm going to read it all in one go. I was trying to do 2 chapters a day on audio, but for whatever reason that doesn't work for me like it does in print. 15h
julieclair Good idea about the audio. I checked #Everand, and was pleased to see it was included in my subscription. I never switched to their new plan, and I‘m finding that many books I want to read are no longer available to me. (edited) 14h
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair glad it was there! 4h
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Bookwormjillk sometimes Juliet Stevenson is too good on audiobook and cringe at particular mean thing Mrs Norris says. 4h

"About thirty years ago Miss Maria Ward, of Huntingdon, with only seven thousand pounds, had the good luck to captivate Sir Thomas Bertram, of Mansfield Park,......." #Pemberlittens I'm here! 2 birthday celebrations in 3 days and now getting ready for holiday weekend house party has me a bit discombobulated. I used this Readalong as excuse to buy to copies off Ebay.

Deblovestoread Pretty! 2d
Andrea313 I'm reading the Cranford edition, too! Does yours also have Lady B hoping that Fanny doesn't "teize" Pug? None of my other editions write it that way...antiquated spelling or horrible typo? ? 2d
staci.reads Pretty copies! 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 it does! I'm mean Jane Austen wasn't the best at spelling. Is it just misspelled? Like Love and Freindship? Do you correct? Or let it stand? 1d

And we're off! We open with a portrait of three sisters- one very well-married, one relatively well-married, and one, well...whomp, whomp. Poor Mrs. Price has too many children and not enough income so the eldest girl is pawned off onto wealthy relations. Can I just say, if you're going to rip a child from her home, could you maybe greet her with ANY kind of affection and not just offer a snack?! I don't blame Fanny for breaking down in tears!

Crinoline_Laphroaig I always feel so sorry for Fanny here. 2d
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig I know, it's such a terrible introduction to an entirely new life. For all the shit I'm going to give Edmund throughout this re-read, he's so wonderful to her in the second chapter. 2d

#PemberLittens, are we even ready?! I LOOOVE Mansfield Park and have very little chill about it. I'm so psyched for two chapters a day of quiet self-denial, bitchy cousins, the aunt from hell, my least favorite Austen fuckboy, a romantic hero that nobody likes, and moral outrage about the lamest play ever put on by a bunch of kids in a living room. And yet...I adore every bit of it and can't wait to return, every single time. #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Susanita Oh my gosh, the play! 3d

#Pemberlittens it's almost time! I'm going to aim for 2 Chapters a Day. I quickly made a schedule just in case I get behind or if I'm reading edition with Volume/Chapter numberings.

Tag me and use #JaneAustenThenAndNow so everyone can find your posts. 📖

TheBookHippie Just grabbed it off the shelf! 3d

Andrea313 Oh! I don't know why I thought Emma was next, but this is such a wonderful surprise! I love this book wayyyy too much. 3d

rubyslippersreads I‘ve been thinking about rereading because I just read this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/27/books/review/jane-austen-mansfield-park.html?... 3d

Ruh-roh! What say you, #PemberLittens? Is it truly time for another S&S? I have so many questions! Will they show us a Willoughby/Brandon duel? Am I wrong to wish for a scene of Robert self-importantly shopping for a toothpick case? And most importantly, will we get an Edward Ferrars who is a true mopey sadsack, as God and Jane Austen intended?? 😜 Link to article in the comments. #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Ruthiella I just hope they do it “right”. Edward Ferrars/Hugh Grant aside, I like the Emma Thompson version. I can‘t watch the P&P with Kiera Knightly. I just want to comb everyone‘s hair in it. 1w
Andrea313 @Ruthiella OK but that comment about combing people's hair made me laugh. 🤣😂 I like the '95 and '05 versions of P&P, just as I like the Emma Thompson S&S as well as the 2008 mini-series. I think each of them got different things right and I can find something to love about them all. But I am NOT down with the modernized, anachronistic adaptations like the most recent version of Persuasion. No direct address to camera, please! 1w

bookishbitch I think I'm one of the few who likes something about all the film versions of her books. And I've been surprised at just how many there have been! (The black and white 1938 tv P&P started them all, I believe.) Love them or hate them, they all deviate from the books. 1w
nanuska_153 @Ruthiella 🤣🤣🤣 the hair 1w
nanuska_153 Now I really want the toothpick case scene! 😂 1w

Mehso-so

A slight little book, but enjoyable, giving an overview of the flowers, trees, fruits, and other natural elements mentioned in Jane's works, from the strawberries picked at Donwell to the trees which bear Marianne's beloved dead leaves to the hyacinth that Catherine Morland learns to love. The illustrations are sweet but simple, and so is the narrative- not much depth, but enough to whet the appetite if you wanted to learn more.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I liked the tree section. Wasn't particularly interested in DIY/craft part. My favorite remains 3d
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig That's on my list for August! And yeah, I'm not terribly crafty so unfortunately those sections were lost on me. 3d

I believe all the other #PemberLittens must have snagged this amazing Jane Austen book scene, because it doesn‘t show up even if the cart has over $150! I‘ll be sure to check my local Bricks & MiniFigs store to get a set! #LEGO

TheBookHippie Yah! I assumed the same! 1w
Graciouswarriorprincess I got mine off Facebook Marketplace brand new for $20. 1w
CrowCAH @Graciouswarriorprincess that‘s a decent price! I‘ll check it out. 1w
