I know I have until the 30th for my next #WeeklyFavorites , but none of my current reads are going to displace Zorrie. Such a beautiful story.

#ReadAway2024 #AwesomeApril #readathon

Finished last night for #SundayBuddyRead this book was a surprise for me. A quietly beautiful telling of the simple life of a resilient woman. Short in pages & it deserves a slowly savored read. Thanks to @TheBookHippie for choosing it & hosting it so well. It will be one of my favorites for 2024. Lovely.

Life slowing down
Zorrie resting more and seeing friends who passed before

Interesting way to end the book?

♥️a link to crabapple blooming from Sarah @Sargar114 ♥️

Librarybelle This whole book has been beautiful. We saw Zorrie‘s beginning, and I think it‘s a fitting way to end the book with her quiet final days. 6h
IndoorDame I thought the ending had a beautiful symmetry. I glanced back at the opening scene and was reminded that it opened with her in the daybed, needing to slow down, but the beginning is dreamless and alone and at the beginning she says she doesn‘t like dreaming. In the end her visions are filled with all the people she‘s learned to care about along the way. 6h
vlwelser This is a very slow and satisfying book. It's beautifully written. It's just a normal life with nothing truly overly dramatic. Or maybe she's the one that's not overly dramatic. 6h

TheBookHippie @IndoorDame it was a beautiful circle. 6h
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I was pondering that myself. It‘s her I think. 6h
vlwelser It's her. When you think about it, there is actually a lot going on here. But she pulls you into her nbd attitude. And the author is sort of brilliant for presenting it this way. 5h
mcctrish @vlwelser it is all those things. It‘s comforting too, a beautiful life doesn‘t have to have drama 5h
mcctrish @Librarybelle I loved the circling back within the book, circle of lifing, confirming/re-emphasizing points again 5h
kspenmoll Wonderful life, full circle. @vlwelser a brilliant book, yes. A life of an every day woman. @IndoorDame thanks for reminding me of how the book opened, and how she ended up in the end. The aloneness in the beginning, the love she gathered from connecting with others, no longer alone , along her lifetime. 5h
Karisa @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie Yes! Beautiful in its symmetry, simple, and elegant. It works so well, a true testament to the writer‘s talent. 5h
DebinHawaii It is a quietly beautiful book about life and resilience. 💙 I‘m really glad we read it. 4h
Sargar114 Agree with everyone, such a beautiful book and definitely can see the symmetry. I‘m just astounded how our said so much with so little. 2h

The fair
TULIPS
AMSTERDAM
ANNE FRANK

Seeing the place her husband died…

Closure?

Librarybelle I think it‘s a form of closure for her. She needed this. I was a little surprised she went, but was glad for her that she did. 6h
IndoorDame I was impressed with her hopping a spontaneous international flight! Closure is so elusive, but maybe after all those years it was a form of renewal? 6h
vlwelser I loved this part. After her younger self never even made it to Chicago. 6h
See All 9 Comments
mcctrish This part just exemplified how Zorrie continues to grow and evolve and take risks. To quote Ted Lasso badly “she‘s curious, not judgemental “ she‘s always looking at things from other angles whereas Noah wears blinders 6h
kspenmoll This journey took me by surprise but it was such a wonderful experience to watch her expand her world, grow & change. Agree with @IndoorDame , it felt like a renewal, a yes to life 5h
Karisa @mcctrish Love Lasso! Going to miss having new episodes so much. 5h
Karisa @Librarybelle I was surprised too but loved this twist! 5h
DebinHawaii I was surprised & happy she went. Closure with Harold in a sense but also a chance to escape a bit & see more of the world. 4h
Sargar114 So shocking, but loved it. Agree with everyone it did seem like a bit of closure. 2h

Sheriff asks Zorrie to watch over Noah
Which she does with so much food
The descriptions!!! Yum.

Noah
Rejects Zorrie
“My heart is the same as an upside down flame.”
He loves Opal, still.
He makes her a glass bird
….

Sigh

Librarybelle I think this shows the strength of Zorrie. We know she has feelings for Noah in the subtle phrasing of passages throughout the book, but she‘s willing to help Noah and keep him safe, however she can. 6h
IndoorDame Food as love is so universal. It works well here where no one speaks. 6h
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame my mantra FOOD IS LOVE. 6h
See All 10 Comments
vlwelser All that food! You must have been in your happy place with this. 6h
mcctrish I LOVE how this story circles back and confirms your feelings. We knew she loved him. And Noah can‘t stop loving Opal, or is he afraid to because hope of her getting better is how he‘s survived for so long he can‘t quit now or be the reason she relapses 6h
kspenmoll She was pouring so much love and hope into her cooking for Noah. It was so sad when Noah could not return her feelings. 5h
Karisa I kept thinking it was too bad she couldn‘t have returned Hank‘s feelings. Zorrie and Hank would have been so well suited. He would‘ve taken care of her as much as she does for others. Noah was not really there—stuck in the past and losing his parents seemed to send him over the edge. So sad all of it 5h
DebinHawaii I said in the previous question that I don‘t think Noah is capable of more of a relationship than he has with Opal so he would never have let Zorrie in. 4h
DebinHawaii And yes, food is love when & when you don‘t have the words. The food descriptions were excellent. I felt so sorry for Zorrie here. 4h
Sargar114 This too was very sad. She cares for Noah in a way he could never return and she knows that but kudos for trying. I agree @Karisa Hank seemed like a good fit. 2h

A fire
Noah‘s trying to get to Opal..
Is he a little off or desperate?
Opals real story we get at last …
Interesting ?

Librarybelle I think Noah was desperate. I cannot imagine being cut off from a loved one, without the ability to see them, though knowing that they are alive. Poor Opal. 6h
IndoorDame Opal‘s actual story is desperately sad. I can see the weight of that getting to her partner eventually and just overwhelming Noah. 6h
vlwelser I think he's a little off but too calculated to be truly crazy. The fact that he never lets this go is a bit crazy all on its own. 6h
See All 14 Comments
mcctrish In the beginning I thought Noah increased Opal‘s crazy so that‘s why he wasn‘t allowed to see her but she was good and crazy before hand. I get that Noah ( and his family) weren‘t enough to keep her from being a danger to herself and others and that‘s why Virgil called for help. Did her family want to punish Noah for that ? Or was a pen pal all Opal could handle ( which is heartbreaking for Noah) 6h
kspenmoll @mcctrish Such a good assessment of Opal, Noah, etc. this whole scenario is heartbreaking. I was happy to learn more about them. 5h
mcctrish @kspenmoll Noah is such a contrast to Zorrie‘s life and such a subtle life lesson for the reader 5h
TheBookHippie @mcctrish such a good life lesson. 5h
TheBookHippie @vlwelser it‘s a very short time to give your entire life too. To not allow yourself joy. He could have kept in contact with her and had a life … 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5h
Karisa I was so surprised by the fire—not where I thought the story was going. Noah and Opal are both so sad but in different ways. He seems to be more choosing to be stuck and what he wants from Opal is unrealistic. I guess the same could be said for Zorrie though. Noah was not capable of giving what she needed either. Bleakest love triangle ever… 5h
TheBookHippie @Karisa it‘s definitely CHOICE. 5h
mcctrish @Karisa bang on about Noah 5h
DebinHawaii @Karisa “Bleakest love triangle ever…” so true! I feel like Noah doesn‘t have the capacity for a real relationship. Did/does anyone truly know him? He seems incapable of letting anyone in. Opal story is tragic & I feel for her the most in this. 4h
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Opal haunted me for sure. Noah was an EH for me. 4h
Sargar114 @Karisa well put! It‘s logical in a kinda crazy way considering Opal got sent away after the fire she caused; but it seems the town knows Noah too we‘ll and even the fact that he was that logical supports how sane he can be. While he clearly struggles from mental health issues, not in the same way Opal did. It‘s quite sad. 2h
