In the “Dirty Thirties”, families were torn apart by poverty and dire circumstances. The found family, hardships, and resiliency of the characters was wonderful.

Setting is rural Arkansas, 1933 in the thick of the Great Depression. Interesting premise but was challenging to keep the characters and their storylines straight and failed to capture the imagination. Not for me and bailed at 60% ☹️

The Orchard: A Memoir | Adele Crockett Robertson

Pickpick

This is the memoir of Adele Crockett Robertson, also known as "Kitty", found by her daughter after she passed away in 1979 and published in 1995. It documents the years she worked tirelessly to save the family apple orchard during the Great Depression. While decades have separated us from this history, the story itself is timeless.

Today‘s Prompt: LUGGAGE ON THE COVER

Babies, folks helping each other, and a difficult, but wonderful era.

One of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming. Patience and Becky are characters you would want for a friend.

lynneamch Thx for the rec. I almost bailed after a few chapters, but it got much more complex and interesting. Also worthwhile example of government 's role in lifting people up.Really enjoyed the audio. 4mo

In keeping with my string of #weirdwords that English AUGHT to have from last week… While reading this I looked up “Pageant of Birds” to see if it was a common thing in southern churches I wasn‘t familiar with. Turns out it was a one-off fundraiser event in this particular church to raise money for a new piano. But… my search led me down an internet 🐇🕳️ suggesting “Pageant of Pigeons” as a communal noun, which I love!👇🏼

IndoorDame It‘s not actually one of the MANY grammatically accepted communal nouns for our little 🐦 friends, but it‘s totally the one I‘ll be using from now on. 😁 #weirdwordwednesday 4mo
CBee Oh I love that!! And they do strut a bit, so I‘d say they‘re pageant worthy 😊😂 4mo

Amazing photographic record of depression era Mississippi. Apparently Welty‘s first job post college was as a photographer for the Works Progress Administration, but unsurprisingly the storyteller took her camera & sort of did her own thing. She may not have been a master photographer, but these images unlock a whole world I realized no one‘s ever really talked to me about, even though my grandmother lived through it just a few states over. #20in4

Mehso-so

After reading “Trust“ by Hernan Diaz, I wanted to know more about the time of the Depression. But I should've chosen my book more carefully, so my rating is a personal one and for the right person this book might be filled with insights and information. This is an economical view only regarding this time, so there is no picture of how people were affected or how they came by. Most of the things I read I didn't even understand...

Prompt: CUT CORNERS

Patience is a midwife, and Becky is a nurse.  Both women deliver babies together and share what they have food wise and material wise to “MAKE ENDS MEET.”

It is one of those books you won't want to put down because the characters are so wholesome and because the story is so homey and heartwarming.

Babb does an excellent job humanizing the dust bowl & depression. I learned quite a bit, especially about the migrant camps and how exploitive & dangerous they could be. 😞

Pretty crappy how her research was likely used by Steinbeck without credit and then she couldn‘t get her book published after Grapes of Wrath was released.

Bookwormjillk Wow, I've never heard that. Must read. 12mo
