#copperheads At times this was tough and depressing, but at the same time felt important. Demon with his many faults is a lovable character. Kingsolver really captured the sense of a rural community. I really liked the bigger theme of Appalachia and land vs money that Tommy added to the story! And while I don‘t need a happy ending to like a book, I appreciated how this one wrapped up!

This is a phenomenal retelling of Dickens David Copperfield masterfully brought into the 21st century. Kingsolver uses the framework of Copperfield's story set to the problems of our society. Her story is set in the Appalachian mountains and surrounding areas. Her hero, Demon Copperhead, is followed through childhood towards adulthood as he handles all manner of difficulties and triumphs.

AllDebooks The cast that supports his story is as extraordinary as he is. Kingsolver rages against the unfairness of our modern age, poverty, inequality, lack of opportunities, alcohol and drug addiction. A particular thread explores the scandal of oxycontin misuse. It is quite tragic, scandalous and infuriating that so many of our contemporary problems reflect those of Dickens time, still, after all this time. As always, Kingsolver writes evocatively about 2y

AllDebooks about the natural world, so much so that it almost stands as a constant character, in itself.
The book is a delight to read as a standalone story or with a knowledge of David Copperfield. 2y

Griffin took a nap next to me earlier today while I was reading. Being in the mental health field & in Kentucky, I‘ve heard versions of Demon‘s story many times, except for the extreme foster care situations. I see a lot of kids who have a parent using, in jail, or dead. A lot being raised by grandparents. Some fortunate ones whose parent recovers & is able to be in their life again. I hope Demon‘s story allows others to empathize & increase 👇

Scochrane26 their understanding of substance abuse/poverty/culture/foster kids. I flagged a few passages about addiction & the poor pay of social workers. This book is amazing, & I‘m very happy BK chose to tell it from Demon‘s perspective. #copperheads @Cinfhen (edited) 2y

This book held me under a spell. I was completely enveloped in Demon‘s world and circumstances. Kingsolver set out to rewrite a modern take on an old classic and while I‘m not 💯 familiar with David Copperfield, you can feel the homage on every page. The writing at times gorgeous, is also so evocative of the 90‘s & early aughts. Demon sheds light on the opioid crisis plaguing Appalachia with love and tenderness for the people & place.

Scochrane26 I‘m at page 332, so more than halfway. I never flag parts of a book, but I have little post-its in 3 passages so I can find them again. There‘s a couple of Kingsolver books I still haven‘t read, but I agree that this one rivals Poisonwood Bible. 2y

Hooked_on_books I resisted Poisonwood for years because of all the hype around it, then wondered what on earth I‘d been waiting for once I read it. It‘s marvelous! It‘s in my all time favorites list. 2y

Cinfhen I think you would have enjoyed this more in print @Megabooks I know I didn‘t care too much for the audio. It‘s just shy of 5 stars for me @Scochrane26 because I felt it was a tiny bit too long. I‘m very picky about length and editing but it‘s still a beautifully crafted story 🙌🏻 2y
