A young woman is obsessed with “the man I want to be with” and a white and wealthy woman with “a perfectly manicured Instagram grid”.
The man is serially unfaithful. He‘s married and has an affair with the woman she is obsessed with. He holds her at arm‘s length, far enough for her to observe and interpret the toxicity of the situation. She recognizes structures in gender, race and power dynamics that are brilliant described. #womensprizelonglist

A fun read. A podcaster returns to teach a class, at the fancy boarding school of her childhood where she was an outsider and her once roommate was murdered. Reads like a mystery, layered with interesting takes on the #metoo movement and grooming, collective memory, race and privilege, the exploitative nature of true crime, wrongful imprisonment and so much more. Sharp and nuanced, I found the ending unsatisfying but all the more realistic for it.

This book held me under a spell. I was completely enveloped in Demon‘s world and circumstances. Kingsolver set out to rewrite a modern take on an old classic and while I‘m not 💯 familiar with David Copperfield, you can feel the homage on every page. The writing at times gorgeous, is also so evocative of the 90‘s & early aughts. Demon sheds light on the opioid crisis plaguing Appalachia with love and tenderness for the people & place.

Another #ReadingAmericas23 audio that I flew through 🥰I thought this would be a mindless listen ( and it was😉) but it was so entertaining and a great escape. Two moneyed Greenwich families fly to #Bermuda for their daughter‘s destination wedding, where of course family secrets explode. Would work for #52BookClub23 #secrets #contemporarysetting #Scribd
