Cuilin I do wonder why a chapter like this is added into a novel, as it never seems to move the plot forward. Is to highlight the suffering as that‘s a big theme of the book? Who knows? It‘s all rather fascinating though, if a little 🍌 👖. 2y

Ruthiella So I listened to a pretty erudite book tuber about this book and he said the point of the novel is the age old question in Christian theology of why do humans suffer if there is a benevolent god looking out for us. So the plot is maybe all subservient to this idea and therefore occasionally whackadoodle. Also, FD had a son named Aleksey who died as a child, which was a huge blow. Generally FD‘s life was one of hardship, illness and grief. 2y
