The Big Book of Irony | Jon Winokur
post image
Panpan

I still don‘t understand. It still sounds like sarcasm to me. Examples didn‘t help. A few examples were amusing, but still didn‘t help. It started with explanations of the different types of irony, then a history of irony. There were various examples of authors using irony, irony in pop culture. At least it was fast to read. I liked that there were a number of Canadian examples. But I still don‘t “get” it. I‘m probably more confused than ever.

Appreciate what you have. Lesson learned the hard way in this story. This was an amazing short story. I had never read it.

"People, especially people like this hard-assed proto-Republican son of a bitch right here, often assumed that liberalism was easy. That "Be nice" was a passive, default position. Man, Jesus thinks, how wrong can you be?"

"Christine wakes up every morning in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar man. She looks in the mirror and sees an unfamiliar, middle-aged face. And every morning, the man she has woken up with must explain that he is Ben, he is her husband, she is forty-seven years old, and a terrible accident two decades earlier decimated her ability to form new memories."

LazyDays Oh no! What a great metaphor. Correct me if I'm wrong, I always use metaphor and similes wrong. Either way great example of not letting your fears control you.🙌 5y
EadieB @LazyDays not sure it is either: While both similes and metaphors are used to make comparisons, the difference between similes and metaphors comes down to a word. Similes use the words like or as to compare things—“Life is like a box of chocolates.” In contrast, metaphors directly state a comparison—“Love is a battlefield.”
