I wanted to like this. It draws extensively & specifically from (mostly) Celtic folklore about the fae. I forgive a lot with a 1st book in a fantasy series because we have to build out a whole world but my issue was:
I was taken out of the plot so many times by a characters behavior:
-Why is Toby kissing this guy? Why do we like him?
-why is this character mad at Toby?
-Why doesn‘t Toby just tell the truth?
Etc
Also ..not what a hope chest is.

monalyisha LOL I haven‘t read this but that last sentence got me. 😅 2w
5feet.of.fury @monalyisha it was a small box, not a chest of ANY sort! 😂 I have no idea why it bothered me but it did 2w
IMASLOWREADER well cant win them all lol but i hope that milk shake was good 😊 2w

5feet.of.fury @IMASLOWREADER thanks! It was an Irish Americano ☕️ and it was delish! 😋 2w
HeyT Omg I read this and was not a fan way back near when it first came out and I've always been like why was this so popular? I also couldn't figure out why I hated it so much when I've loved most of her other series/stuff. Ngl I feel kind of validated right now lol. (edited) 2w
5feet.of.fury @HeyT I‘ve been a big fan of her for a while too! (primarily the Mira Grant stuff) I was hoping to like it since there‘s so many (book 19 coming out this year!) & I like urban fantasy, but I completely didn‘t get the appeal of Toby or her circumstances. Idk. haha glad I could help 2w

Another good installment in the October Daye series, but I did find one thing disappointing. I was excited that this book was set in Toronto (close to where I live) but almost all the action happened in the hidden faerie realm. The only Toronto references were the overused Tim Hortons jokes. We really do have more than Tim Hortons here in Canada! 😄

PuddleJumper 🎉🎉🎉 13mo
Librarybelle I‘ve heard of Tim Horton‘s but did not realize it‘s a Canadian company 13mo

Hooked_on_books But Timbits are so good! Especially the chocolate ones. Yum! 13mo
kwmg40 @Librarybelle They're not wholly Canadian these days, as there is some foreign ownership, but Tim's was founded in the 1960's by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton, and there's pretty much a Tim's in every Canadian city and town, no matter how small. 13mo
Librarybelle Good to know! I think I‘ve seen one near Erie, Pennsylvania but have not visited. 13mo
kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books My family had to try the Timbiebs (a collaboration with Justin Bieber) when they came out, but my favourites remain the chocolate glazed and old fashioned. 13mo
TheAromaofBooks Yes, we have Tim Horton's here in Ohio... TimBits are the best!! 13mo
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Nice to see appreciation of Tim's elsewhere in the world! My daughter lives in London where a Tim's opened up recently. She said there were long lineups, which seemed weird to us, as Tim's is just the local no-frills coffee shop to us Canadians. 😄 13mo

The tagged book! I stayed up until like 1 or 2 in the morning to finish reading it! I absolutely loved getting Tybalt‘s point of view, and the concept of telling a story from two different points of view always grabs my attention.

#SundayFunday Have a safe and happy day, and remember to tag me!

julesG It's Monday here already. (*sigh*). Of course, I love avoiding sleep just to finish a book. I know better, but still do it. 1y

Even with the 14th book in the series, McGuire still brings new and interesting twists to the ongoing plotlines and development of the characters. There were more than a few surprises throughout this story!

I'm alive! Hopefully.

Emerging from a very busy season of my life to a hopefully slightly less busy one. Hoping to be back around here more! Still been reading through it all - November in particular was a good month. Hoping to very belatedly do some end of year wrap-up thoughts.

Missed you all! What were some faves from 2023 for you? Anything you're looking forward to reading soon?

(tagged is most recent read - good book in a great series!)

BarbaraJean Yaaay! You‘ve seen my 2023 list, but the tagged is one I‘m looking forward to reading soon, from my Auld Lang Spine list (library hold came in and it‘s just sitting there on my Kindle!). And I still haven‘t done any of my planned year-end posts on Litsy, so maybe yours aren‘t as belated as you thought… 😏 (edited) 1y
Tea_and_Starstuff @BarbaraJean - ooooh, will be curious for your thoughts, that's been in my circle of awareness but hasn't risen to the top. And good to know re: belatedly adding year-end summaries. 1y

I'm hoping to make good progress in 4 series for #SeriesLove2024:
- Discworld (make progress, as I've read only 13 of 41)
- October Daye (read novels 14 to 18 and some novellas)
- Inspector Rebus (make progress, as I've read only 7 of 24)
- The Expanse (continue reread of main series and read some of the novellas I've missed)

Thanks to @TheSpineView and @Andrew65 for hosting!

Andrew65 I‘m also reading the Rebus Series for #SeriesLove2024. Some good series lined up, good luck 😁 1y

Many thanks to @Andrew65 and @TheSpineView for hosting #SeriesLove2023!

I finished 7 novels and 3 novellas in the October Daye series and will be continuing with the 14th novel for #SeriesLove2024.

I only finished 2 books in the Maigret series and 1 in the Malazan series, but as these were especially challenging (Maigret in French, and Reaper's Gale with 900+ pages), I am pleased enough with the progress!

Andrew65 Excellent, 3ell done. Even more impressive reading in another language 👏👏👏 (edited) 1y

Mehso-so

A novella in the October Daye series. If you've read the earlier books in this series, this is a pretty interesting story about cyber-Dryad April O'Leary, but if you hadn't, the storyline would probably be incomprehensible.

Tybalt usually leaves the questing to October. Unfortunately, she‘s vanished & Titania has rewritten the world to suit her own desires. It‘s up to him to find what allies he can & save the world before Titania makes her spell permanent.

Did I stay up too late to finish this? YES. Am I going to regret this later? Also yes. But I enjoyed every minute of Tybalt‘s snarky, reluctant questing. & I adored seeing his POV of characters we know. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
