Yes, I think I'll bail on this because not only do I dislike the audio narrator, but I also just don't like the writing style.

This was one of my September #Roll100 picks from @PuddleJumper

PuddleJumper Yay! 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly I didn‘t like the writing style either, which surprised me because I loved Anders‘s adult books (and I‘m enjoying her nonfiction that I‘m reading now). (edited) 7mo

Kenyazero @Clare-Dragonfly bummer that it's not just me 😆 I'll keep that in mind if any of Anders's other works cross my path! 7mo
Kenyazero @AbigailJaneBlog Oh no! That's so long 😆 are you going to slog through to the end or call it? 7mo

Debating if I'll have to shelve this until I have time and drive to read a physical or digital copy because the audio narrator is actively annoying me so far.

This was an action packed sci-fi adventure full of great queer characters and interesting world-building. While the stakes were high, I did have some trouble staying invested in the story - it took me a while to get through because it wasn't a book I would hurry to pick back up. But by the end I was fully committed to the characters' mission and will most likely continue the series

The plot of this book is really fun—the clone of an alien heroine has been hidden on Earth and, once retrieved by her space army, tries to figure out how to live up to the legacy of her predecessor, while fighting a genocidal enemy. Unfortunately it felt really dumbed-down and the dialogue was too on the nose, especially the other Earth kids. The space battle near the end was great but I don‘t actually understand how they defeated the Big Bad.

I adore the Anders nonfiction, but struggled through this one. This book is classic YA - big stakes, impulsive decisions, feelings forward - but more queer and in space. Love the setting, the author clearly had fun with the worldbuilding. But it got info-dumpy. Unevenly paced and I had trouble connecting to the characters. But there's much to enjoy and I'm glad it was written - I want more queer and female-forward sci-fi books in the world!

Really fun. This was my first book by this author and I‘ll go back for more. A bit like Becky chambers in terms of the inclusivity the galaxy has in this sci fi universe but really plot driven and action packed. Excited to read the next 2. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Charlie Jan Anders orchestrates an entertaining epic space opera that offers the reader a contemporary heroine that is easy to relate to and understand, largely due to the effective use of similes that convey complex information.

LibrarianRyan I do not like those new covers. Or are they different country covers. I also like how your flipping of the books. I would be too. 😁 2y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, vertical is not allowed, unfortunately! It would be perfect for text heavy covers like this. I ended up putting the barcode between “than death” and partially over Anders on the other one. Not happy with it (as it obscures the text but is still readable) but there wasn‘t a perfect solution that also fit within the cataloguing manual. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LibrarianRyan, hahaha - got to flip off books with covers that make barcoding tricky. They might be the Australian or UK covers? From memory they had 2021 & 2022 publication dates. 2y
LibrarianRyan @thegirlwiththelibrarybag That must be it. Because those are not my covers. It would have been easier to stick the barcode to. But I get it. I Do. 2y

This fun YA space opera, with a diverse cast of characters, was nominated for the 2022 Lodestar (Hugo YA) award. #hugoawards #hugo2022

The plot was just so-so, but what made this a pick for me was the outstanding narration by Hynden Walch, who really brought out the characters' personalities.

As expected, this is a delightful story & this space adventure filled with friendship, compassion (def. with a lowercase ‘c‘ 😂), hope, high stakes & cool tech was the perfect way to start the year. Leave it to Anders to seamlessly incorporate consent, introductions with pronouns, & empathy into a story about a girl, and a ragtag group of friends, who has to save the universe. Anders‘ YA debut is fantastic. I can‘t wait to read the sequel. 💜🚀✨

An incredible out-of-this world take on the chosen one story about a teen girl cloned from a famous intergalactic hero taken to space to fulfill her destiny. Action packed and full of heart. I loved this so much. I especially recommend the audibook which is narrated by Hynden Walch (Princess Bubblegum, Starfire, etc) & be sure to listen to the end when she and Charlie Jane Anders interview each other & generally fangirl together.

I‘m coming back to this, because the story seems like it will be really cool - but it‘s going to have to be a paper copy rather than audio. I wasn‘t loving the narration, but hoped if I stuck with it I would get sucked into the story enough. Got to ch. 12 where we meet the main enemy, and the narrator made him sound like a 10 year old bully on a playground, gloating after he threw dirt at another kid or something. Didn‘t fit with the scene AT ALL

Tina was literally born for great things. She's the clone of a great alien warrior. But when she finally gets picked up by a spaceship, it's not quite the futuristic experience she expected.

I think this is the best YA science fiction I've read in a really long time. I won't spoil the ending, but it invokes one of my favorite tropes in science fiction, and I can't wait to see where the series goes next.

Tina is the teen clone of a galactic hero—hidden on earth in a human body, destined to save the universe. Charlie Jane Anders‘ YA debut, the first in the Unstoppable Series, is full of action and full of heart. Fans of Becky Chambers will love the crew of the HMSS Indomitable, the book‘s diverse representation, pronoun introductions, and range of alien life. My only complaint is the lightning-quick pace—kids these metacycles, they grow up so fast!

Centique That Becky Chambers reference means I have to stack it! 3y
