Wow, it's so refreshing to finally be reading about racism in the no-bullshit way that Reni writes it, which is exactly how we should be talking about it if we ever want to truly develop positively as a society for the benefit of genuinely everyone. Every chapter was rich with facts, fair reasoning, and a lot of information about Britain's heavy involvement is a racist history that simply isn't taught to us, despite how important it is. Recommend!

I would love to give this one a blanket recommendation as a catch-all universally-accessible masterwork of consciousness-raising, but I can窶�t imagine people still deeply entrenched in systemic racism learning from it. Interesting read

This book should be required reading for everyone. Eye-opening.

A must read.

A look into the history of racism in the UK, but maybe more importantly a look into how people aren‘t just one thing. That women of color face discrimination both as women and colored and that these aren‘t opposites. How being working class and being colored also means that you are disadvantaged on more than one front. And that white people need to start thinking about their privilege.

One aspect of this book that I really found interesting was the focus of racism in Britain and the impact of colonialism on how Brits treated and accepted people who came from areas that they conquered. I also found her essays on white privilege, feminism and class thought provoking. This book is a must read for those wanting to round out their anti-racism education.

Always a difficult but necessary read (or listen in this case). Reni explains very well systemic racism. I appreciated listening to the chapter discussing racism within the feminism movement. Highly recommended read.

Couching opposition to anti-racist speech and protest as a noble fight for freedom of speech is about protecting whites people from being criticized. It seems there is a belief among some white people that being accused of racism is far worse than actual racism.

I窶�ve just taken out an audiobook subscription - determined to shape a space to enjoy some audio. I窶藁 a huge podcast fan - which leave little too for audio books. But I窶�ve read so many great reviews to audio versions so I窶藁 going to make it work! 笨費ｸ�

There isn‘t anything notably, individually racist about the people who work in all of the institutions he [hypothetical typical black British man] interacts with. Some of the people will be black themselves. But it doesn‘t really matter what race they are. They are both in and of a society that is structurally racist, and so it isn‘t surprising when these unconscious biases seep out into the work they do when they interact with the general public.

This book is super readable, as all great nonfiction should be. I like getting to hear some history and perspective of a black person from Britain, and considering the similarities and differences in experience when compared to the US‘s history of race and racism.

1�ｸ鞘ΕI was torn over recommending How to Be an Antiracist by I. X. Kendi or the tagged book. Everyone is probably familiar with Kendi‘s enlightening book. Eddo-Lodge provides the British perspective. #BLM An absolute gem! I do read widely about race but mostly thru books focused on the U.S.The author does an outstanding job of explaining systemic racism, the lack of greater inclusion regarding the feminist movement & class.Her added chapter notes that some gains have been made , but in light of Brexit, Trump, & other countries worldwide embracing racist , anti-immigrant, & Nationalistic political ideas we should be ever vigilant.

I picked this book up mostly because of the provocative title, but what I got was a fascinating and insightful look at racism in the UK. I especially liked the sections on feminism and class. Read it! 箝撰ｸ鞘ｭ撰ｸ鞘ｭ撰ｸ鞘ｭ撰ｸ鞘ｭ撰ｸ�

One everyone should read

Readers have no excuse not to be educated

I was recommended this book as protests broke out following the death of George Floyd and as Black Lives Matter was on headlines in the UK.

I knew very little about race and the struggles faced and thought being 'colour blind' was okay and enough. This book discusses structural racism, and racism in feminism and class. It has helped me learn and asks for action to bring justice. It focuses on the UK.

Book #26: Gotta unlearn and relearn quite a lot!

And one that‘s sitting on my #BLMTBR pile, I really need to read it this year. There is always more to keep reading and learning, keep an open mimd and make it a lifelong project, the more you read, the more connections you‘ll make!

Genuinely think this book needs to be compulsory high school reading. I‘m learning so much.

Reni Eddo-Lodge has become the first black British author to take the overall No 1 spot in the UK窶�s official book charts, making her the first black British author to take the top slot since Nielsen began recording book sales in 2001.

Such good news, but also so depressing that they started tracking UK book charts in 2001 and this is the first black British author and only the second black author at all (thank you Michelle Obama) to top the list. Pretty great read. I didn‘t realize how little I knew about race relations in other countries. I am, and the book points out, focused on a very American-centric view of race. this book pointed out that I still have so much to learn about the WORLDS history of race and colonization

It was a good 窶徇ail窶� week in terms of my #integrateyourshelf project. I‘ve been reading diverse fiction for years, but I can afford to put my money where my priorities are, so I‘m making an effort to buy more from BIPOC authors and get my white authors through the library.

Reni Eddo-Lodge has contributed so much to the global conversation on race, and she does it succinctly, passionately, and straightforwardly. Her skills as a journalist really shine in this book.

There is always more that can be learned and done about the structurally racist systems we live in. This book does focus on the U.K. rather than America, but it is a good place to start and I learned so much. #BLM �汨嬉沛ｿ

My local indie just posted this. How to Be an Antiracist and Me and White Supremacy are both being reprinted in the UK too. Amazing!

Presenting books that changed me or left a deep impression on me.

I learned a whole bunch from reading this book. I appreciated learning more of the history of race in Britain. I benefited from reading the authors perspective and through considering her words deeply. I‘m thankful she wrote this book and I‘m thankful to have read it.
