Low pick; the narrator Greg was almost insufferable but I was definitely Team Earl! Read for the Banned Book category of #AsheCoNCReadingChallenge #Aug2023 Book77

LeafingThroughLife Greg was definitely so insufferable. I only managed to give this a “so-so” because of him. 🤦‍♀️ 1d
BkClubCare @LeafingThroughLife - could/should be a book to be discussed, perhaps so that Greg‘s behavior could be explored through his grief and approach to human relationships. Even just why the adults loved the video and the students didn‘t would be an amazing conversation? Anyway, I thought Earl was terrific and deserved better (so did Rachel) 7h

LOVED it! Thank you @AvidReader25 for #BuddyRead -ing this with me. #Persuasion2025

The narration by Greta Scacchi is excellent, must be said.

#Aug2025 Book76

AvidReader25 What did you think of Wentworth‘s letter?!?! 4d
BkClubCare @AvidReader25 - such passion! And courage - I loved Anne‘s reaction and how everyone thought she was ill and she couldn‘t get away to process. Plus, the assertion for both Captains to be sure to come to the “party” and they all thought she meant only to be polite to Harville. 😊 3d
AvidReader25 @BkClubCare Yes! And I love that we had a chance to actually see their conversation afterwards. I feel like that‘s so rarely happens in Austen. I love that they shared what they were feeling and how they were processing things and we saw the depth of their maturity, taking ownership of mistakes and assumptions they had made. 3d

@AvidReader25 - Two things:
1) I ❤️ the word thither!!
2) Is the letter from Mrs. Croft in the book I sent?!🤩

And, the second paragraph is beyond confusing. Two cousins (who?!), Miss Elliot (Elizabeth or Anne?), then “she, Anne & Clay” so the SHE must be Elizabeth here?!?!?!?

BkClubCare ⬆️ Third paragraph sorts it out…. 2w
BkClubCare But the 4th! Why HOW is Anne sitting at the window when it was decided she would walk?!! I am utterly confused 😵‍💫 2w

AvidReader25 I haven‘t found a letter from Mrs. Croft yet. I‘m reading them as I get to each point in the story. There are maps, letters, invitations, and a concert program. I‘ll send a pic! Check in day for #Persuasian2025 @AvidReader25

… a few questions:
Did the nephew/Elliot automatically inherit his wife‘s riches upon her death?
I am confused who Colonel Wallis is??
Why the sandy-hair comments?!
Is Mrs Clay a widow? I forget why she is groupie to Elizabeth. And does dad like her or not? Seems he does but a convoluted sentence somewhere says he doesn‘t or does Anne wish he didn‘t?
Am I correct in thinking Sir Walter is … a cad?

When Covid hits, he is in NYC just barely surviving when he delivers groceries to a wealthy enclave — he comes face 2 face with his lover Alice from 20+ years past who had run off with his best friend. Do we need to crowdfund some freakin‘ antibiotic research?! We have some scientists who need some funding. I am not happy with the latest news out of our fed DoH and the lunatic in charge.

I have to finish this book- Libby expires tomorrow; I fear I won‘t be able to sleep if I cram last 70 pages.

ncsufoxes My husband is an oncology research scientist. He currently is a PI at NCI as a contractor. He‘s worked for big & small pharmaceutical companies. He was in high level academic labs through his PhD & post doc. So he‘s been through lots of levels of research & drug development. Most (big) pharmaceutical companies are not about innovation or new ideas. They tweak old ideas. They are afraid to take risks, there is not a lot of incentive to take risks. 3w
ncsufoxes Companies say they want out of the box thinkers but they don‘t. They want what they feel will make them money. Not to mention that FDA trials take years to complete & cost millions of dollars. Not that all companies are bad & not that there hasn‘t been some great things developed over the years. But currently research & drug development is not really into high risk. The current heads of the government too are going to start to pull back on 3w
ncsufoxes funding anything too risky. RFK is clearly going to make sure that all vaccine research comes to a stand still. It is sad & frustrating to see what is happening to science. So many ideas & research is being lost. My husband‘s work directly impacts patients in clinical trials & luckily his preliminary data is all positive & will keep moving forward. But his postdoc advisor is at Columbia & all her research has been halted. 3w
BkClubCare @ncsufoxes - I know, I am terrified. It‘s just horribly horrifically sad. 3w
CBee @KadaGul YES PLEASE!!!!! How I wish 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 3w
CBee @ncsufoxes and let‘s not forget how he said he‘d find out the cause of autism by what, September? Yeah, so how‘s that going, RFK? 🙄 3w
Christine I love this book and hate the public health news. 😭 3w
Christine @CBee I had just started teaching a sociology of science course when RFK said that about autism; we had literally studied the Andrew Wakefield saga the day before. 😭 We couldn‘t stop talking about it all quarter, the students were just incensed over it. 3w
CBee @Christine my youngest son is autistic and I‘m afraid for him 😢 RFK was already bad enough, but now that he has more power, he‘s completely unhinged. And Wakefield? Oof - it‘s already hard enough to navigate life with an autistic kid - he did some serious damage 🤦‍♀️ 3w
Christine @CBee I get your fear (and empathize - both of my kids are disabled, one autistic and one with complex medical/developmental needs. They‘re late teens by now and I‘m hoping our California resources endure...but I get it. 🩷💔). 3w

I am starting this today, reading a chapter a day. Would a family tree be easy to find in the webs? I don‘t quite get who the heir is - a cousin? And what did this mean “wearing black ribbons for his wife”?

#Persuasion2025 @AvidReader25

Graywacke Enjoy. The black ribbons are just a way of saying he‘s a widower. 1mo
Ruthiella @Andrea313 is Litsy‘s Jane Austen expert and close reader extraordinaire. But I believe the estate and title are entailed on the male issue and since Mr. Eliot has no son, a male cousin is the heir. (edited) 1mo
AvidReader25 @Ruthiella Than you! So helpful. 1mo

ChaoticMissAdventures This is my favorite Austen! I think the family tree from this blogger is pretty good - https://bookedfortheday.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/persuasion-character-chart/ 1mo
rwmg Black ribbons are a sign of mourning, so his wife is dead. I'm not sure what the stages of mourning are but probably she died about a year ago 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I loved this book. 1mo
BkClubCare @rwmg - Jane Austen drops these lil nuggets and you have to know what they mean or you risk missing something! 😂 Thank you. 1mo

BkClubCare Yes @AvidReader25 and @Ruthiella - thank you 🙏 ☺️ 1mo
Andrea313 @Ruthiella What, this is the loveliest shout-out! Elizabeth wearing black ribbons here shows that while she's observing the loss, she's not going full-out in mourning clothes. The annotated Persuasion also mentions that limiting her mourning garb to ribbons only might be a sign of estrangement between Sir Walter's family and his heir. 1mo
Andrea313 And yes, @Ruthiella is right that Mr. Elliot is Sir Walter's heir and Kellynch Hall is entailed to him, the closest male relative, and not to his daughters. Stupid Regency inheritance law! 1mo
BkClubCare @Andrea313 - thank you! I was wanting more info on how this dude with the dead wife (and curious what she died of) was related. I will try to follow the story as it unfolds 🤪 1mo
Andrea313 @BkClubCare I hope you enjoy it! Persuasion is probably my favorite Austen novel. 🩵 1mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Her insight into relationships is amazing given the nature of her life. Virginia Woolf talks about her not even having a “Room of One‘s Own” to write in. 4w
BkClubCare @DrSabrinaMoldenReads - oh, goodness, I have yet to read A Room of One‘s Own and I adore Virginia Woolf. TY for sharing. 4w

Up next and I am so excited and hopeful that I will love it that I‘m almost scared to begin 😱

#ToF #LibraryBook so I best get started.

HodgepodgeandMiscellany And hello back! I‘ve missed you! Hoping I can figure this app out better than I did when I tried it years ago. But even if I don‘t, I‘ll at least be able to see what you‘re up to. 😃 2mo
BkClubCare @HodgepodgeandMiscellany - ask me anything anytime. If I don‘t know Litsy, I probably know someone who does ☺️ 2mo

Pickpick

I don‘t usually give credit to short chapters nor consider the multiple POV of a story but #CampLitsy25 discussion has me grappling to explain what worked for me in this story. I do believe it was excellent craft of setting the tension, layering the mystery, being inside each character‘s fears and my questions of why on their actions. Perhaps pacing was perfect due to my only having many short time spans to read it, thus off time ⬇️

BkClubCare To just think about and wanting to get back to it. I do have a criticism that some chapters were too abrupt and resolved too quickly, but that could also have been in its favor. I liked Rowan a lot and Dom was super complicated. ⬇️ 2mo
BkClubCare And how Rowan could be conflicted about things but also strong in her resolve? Or how SHOCKED I was that it was Orly that destroyed the comm center?!?! (Ihad wondered about that from close to the beginning.) And sure, it wasnt perfect, but I liked the kids so much and rooted for them. ⬇️ 2mo
BkClubCare Hank didn‘t get enough or maybe he was too caricature? Do you think that there might someday be a sequel?! And would I read it now that a seed of doubt has been planted re: the author‘s hatred of women? Lots in this but I am ready to move on and away, I think. #June2025 Book57 2mo
Suet624 I‘d be curious to know whether she has plans to write a sequel. 2mo

Listening to this now. I have heard good things (even if I had no clue and can never remember what rock band he is in! I am clueless with popular music these days)

ChaoticMissAdventures I still think of him in Nirvana first and foremost. 2mo
Suet624 This is such a good read. 2mo
aa_guer2021 Thank you for reminding me that I haven‘t finished this yet! 😣😬 2mo
nanuska_153 He was the drummer in Nirvana and he played drums with Queens of the Stone Age too. He's also the lead singer and founder of Foo Fighters 2mo
BkClubCare @nanuska_153 - ok, yeah, I probably deserve that. I know who he is but I have never listened to that era‘s music 😏 But thank you for letting me know Graham Norton writes books! I love his show. 2mo

Mehso-so

Filler book to hit a category of #AsheCoNCReading Challenge : a book by Kristin Hannah 😂
I respect her ability to churn out books people love but she‘s not for me. I searched Libby for anything short of hers that was available.

#June2025 Book56 #iLovePie #RhubarbMeringue

TheBookHippie I loathe her writing if that helps 🫣🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂🤣😅 pie looks good. 2mo
JamieArc I am not a fan either. Way too depressing. She assaults you with tragedy after tragedy without any payoff. That is not why I read 😂😂 2mo
BkClubCare @JamieArc - My friend that got me into this challenge is actually boycotting this category!! 2mo
BkClubCare @TheBookHippie yeah, no FOMO for me. I did happen to read a few pages of The Women, but then NOPE. 🙂‍↔️ 2mo

RaeLovesToRead Ok, I need to get to this book ASAP! 2mo
BkClubCare @RaeLovesToRead - the foreshadowing! The “wait, what?!” ‘s are just perfect. I have no idea who to trust yet. 2mo

I‘m not at the shore, but am starting this on a wild windy thunderstormy day; it‘s dark now, and the power across the street has been out since early morning. Ours came on around noon. Be safe out there. ⛈️ ☔️ 💨 🌱⚡️

Ruthiella You stay safe! ❤️ That is very appropriate weather for the book! 2mo
