Get outside and be with nature! How to review a book that is outside “my” experience? Yet quite relatable what with career goal challenges, sense of self against expectations of culture, marriage + family dynamic balance quests? I was often in-wrestle with the turmoil going on and hoping for a win for Jane, mother and author, hoping to achieve her dreams. I appreciate the ending and give this a strong pick; a #notfittingin book.

Prelude to my Top 24 (or 25) post, I actually managed to finish a photo bracket and continue to agree with my choices. BUT! The real question is… will any of my current reads knock off Make Envy Disco 🪩?! I doubt it.
BIG THANK YOU to @Catsandbooks for the bracket template.

Lovely, just lovely. Don‘t expect high drama and fast plot; the writing is quietly powerful. It‘s a good idea to know what this book *is* before reading. #ToBShortList #Dec2024 Book115

Posing Copper with the🎄has been a challenge this season! Or maybe he only cooperates when I tell him it is for Litsy?! 😂

Audio 🎧 was a good way to experience this and I give kudos to the narrator Cassandra Campbell 🌟 Her voice was perfect for the present tense and the repetition. We get such interesting insight into a broad view of the female psyche; how diverse our wants and needs might be. We are fighters all.

This one was a surprise and yet, I find myself wondering about my preference to know little about plot or theme when I begin a book. I admit, I was getting irritated- extremely irritated- with Isabelle. I still don‘t ‘get‘ her, but then she didn‘t really ‘get‘ herself. Many thoughts, thoughts that aren‘t landing. 🛬

This. Is. GOOD.
I hope it finds more readers. Our MC has basically run away from home in NYC to have a “work meeting” in Berlin post 911 (Pres. Bush era) and wanders around lost yet encountering interesting people. More dialogue-heavy than I usually read but IT WORKS! I fell for everyone ❤️

Yeah, I realize and readily admit a couple of things re: this post.

No, (1) the purple trees likely have nothing to do with this book but I have been saving it for a Litsy post (yay!), and
(2) this title is not on the ToB long list. Oh well!

A friend that I highly respect offered this title to me and now, 25% in, I am loving it. Witty banter, woman with a big heart, on a mission to fulfill a promise made to her nonagenarian BFF? YAAAS - all in.

Between a so-so and a pick because I never felt bored though I was often confused and bewildered. I enjoyed the questioning of how and what translators DO, I was intrigued by the devotion of the translators to their Dear Author, I found the animosity between English and Spanish amusing in its presentation. One word I read in a review somewhere calling this “delirium” - it fits! I have no doubt that a “discussion” would find me liking it more.

This book is set in Newport RI and I am an avowed Newportophile. So when the narrator mispronounces a street name it is jarring! I have been jarred. 🤣
(FYI - Thames Street is not said like one says in London… it‘s (probably) sadly Americanized? The locals say the TH sound and it rhymes with “names”)

Pic of the view from the rooftop bar of the Vanderbilt Grace Hotel, and if you ever go, you‘ll love the elevator 📚

tpixie I went to Newport- my first visit to RI- the 1st weekend in November, for a Team W book weekend to celebrate their 5th book collaboration . It was a great event and what a lovely town! 3w
BkClubCare @tpixie - it‘s one of my happy places 3w
marleed Oh, I while back I listened to an audiobook and Spokane WA was referenced often throughout the story and the narrator pronounced the city as if the ‘e‘ gave the ‘a‘ a long sound to rhyme with Maine rather that rhyming with ‘man‘. Drove me crazy! 3w
See All 13 Comments
Larkken I was supposed toto be there this thanksgiving for family until work got crazy! I had no idea this book was set there. And I get it about the pronunciation. For me, the state of Nevada will always be triggering 😆 3w
tpixie @BkClubCare I can see why!!! 3w
tpixie Team W‘s 4th book was set in Newport 3w
BkClubCare @Larkken - uh oh. How is Nevada supposed to be pronounced? I cringe often when I hear people incorrectly say Missouri. (It is NOT Miz-OR-ee!! 😡) 3w
BkClubCare @marleed - even me as a Kansas girl knows how to say Spokane! 😃 3w
BkClubCare @tpixie - added to my mile high tbr 3w
Larkken @BkClubCare oh man. People say it like that?!? For me, Nevada the state should never be pronounced like the Spanish word ? the second vowel in the state should rhyme with "bad" instead 3w
BkClubCare @Larkken - 🤨 Now that I think about it… the town of Nevada MO pronounces it WRONG! Don‘t visit, is my advice. Same with town Versailles MO 😂 (ver-sales) 3w

Current read (which was referenced by The Seven Year Slip author Ashley Poston) and I happened to have on my shelf.

Ruthiella This has been on my TBR for ages. I‘m a little worried it will be too YA for me. 2mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - I am only 20 pages in and it is mental. Doesn‘t feel like any YA I‘ve ever read. But 🤷🏻‍♀️ hey - it‘s short! Get from the library and just try it 😏 2mo

Poor Deer: A Novel | Claire Oshetsky
post image

The narrator for the audiobook of Poor Deer is knockin‘ it out of the park! Especially with, “It moved the kindhearted teacher, … and she remembered why she had become a teacher in the first place. It wasn‘t just because no one wanted to marry her. It was also because she had felt a calling.” 😆🤣 Deadpan delivery. Oshetsky is a damn good writer, too. #HappyHalloween #FlyingMonkey (pic from 2009)

Finished this book yesterday… and today, I couldn‘t remember finishing it. Am I stressed?! After working 12 hours today and my hub out of town, needing to walk the dog in the dark, we came upon a neighbor who has lit their house in Red White and Blue. 🇺🇸

Silly me, trying to read only romance to hide from election stress and I pick this! Not sure if 5⭐️ or if I am feeling generous- it did make me laugh.

Suet624 😳 this election 😳 2mo

What an interesting book, truly. Ah yes, a classic. But I honestly was so annoyed at the MC and his … predicament? That‘s not the right word. 🧐 Anyway, I didn‘t listen to this straight through; very happy I had the Cliffs Notes (ahem, written in 1963!!!) and almost maybe wish this could be a college level course exploring the author, this dang book AND the films 🎥 of which I hope to see someday. Might be a tough sell to Hub. 💖

BkClubCare And no, the squirrel 🐿️ doesn‘t have anything to do with the book. 2mo
plemmdog I loved it, but yes, you want to shake the narrator. I saw an amazing stage production of this in Canada a few years ago, and even the audience groaned each time Philip caves in to Mildred. 2mo
BkClubCare @plemmdog - well, he redeems himself in the end, it‘s just a tortuous HEA 2mo

Starting this now. Hoping it will be on the #ToB2025_LongList

sarahbarnes Stacking! 2mo
BarbaraBB Me too! Can‘t wait for that longlist! 2mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes - any books you recommend might be LL‘d? I want to be ahead of it, which -of course- is foolish to think I could ever 😂 2mo

BarbaraBB I think Annie Bot or Beautyland are possible contenders. I liked the first one, was underwhelmed by the second. But I am really not good in this guessing. You should ask @squirrelbrain 😀 2mo
squirrelbrain I‘m not good at guessing the ToB books either - there‘s always so many (good) surprises! I think it‘s because it‘s a US-focused list. @BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I can‘t wait for the list, to start the search for where I can get them from. Poor Deer is quite difficult to get hold of here but I do think it has a high chance of being on the list…. 🙄 (edited) 2mo
squirrelbrain Others that I‘ve reserved in anticipation include: Irena Rey, I Cheerfully Refuse, Lesser Ruins, Blue Ruin, Sipsworth, Fruit of the Dead. I‘ve recently read Behind You Is The Sea and I‘m listening to Our London Lives, which could be possibles. 2mo
BarbaraBB Thank you @squirrelbrain this is super inspiring! 2mo
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - OH! I am super excited to see Sipsworth! SO interesting (and happy) that this book is so well loved. I have met the author - his books are quite good. 2mo
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB TY - I love a good list. 2mo
squirrelbrain That‘s a great list! @BarbaraBB This one is on there and I‘ve seen a LOT of hype about it so it could be on ToB. (Another one I can‘t get, of course) 2mo
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I‘ve read that one. It‘s a short story collection and although some are great, it didn‘t live up@to the hype imo 2mo
sarahbarnes Thanks for all the tips @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB! I do know TOB tends to be pretty US-focused. I‘m hoping for a better shortlist this year!! The long list is always such a treasure hunt though. 📚 2mo
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes The longlist is a yearly highlight for me 😀! And I almost forgot but indeed, last year‘s shortlist was a bummer! 2mo

Suet624 Thank goodness for Heather. 2mo
Christy2318 I bought this as part of seeing her at an event last year on her tour and I read her letters most days. But I haven‘t been able to bring myself to read the full book. Instead I‘m binging on my stress relief: romance books, thrillers, and Asian drama. 2mo
KadaGul @Christy2318 What a great combo for decompressing: Romance ❤️➕Thriller 😱🟰Stress Free 🆓 2mo
