This is such an intriguing book! I only knew it involved time ⏰ 🧳 and I am loving the epistolary back & forth. My only to-dos today, besides walk the CopperBop, is to finish this book and write ✍️ a few letters 💌📬

#Nov2024 Book101

I am going to include these quotes; the first one to my friend in MS and the erosion one to my brother, the geologist. The third one made me laugh.

Wild Houses: A Novel | Colin Barrett

#ToBwaiting These are a few titles being talked about for possible inclusion for next March‘s Tournament of Books. We should see the Long List in a couple of weeks.

I do hope Poor Deer is selected- I am enjoying the audiobook. Wild Houses was offered as an Audible freebie (or discount - can‘t recall) so I have it up for a listen soon.

squirrelbrain I‘ve read 3 of these, heard of 2 of them as rumours for the ToB, but Short War is completely new to me. Great choices! 4d

Poor Deer: A Novel | Claire Oshetsky
post image

The narrator for the audiobook of Poor Deer is knockin‘ it out of the park! Especially with, “It moved the kindhearted teacher, … and she remembered why she had become a teacher in the first place. It wasn‘t just because no one wanted to marry her. It was also because she had felt a calling.” 😆🤣 Deadpan delivery. Oshetsky is a damn good writer, too. #HappyHalloween #FlyingMonkey (pic from 2009)

Finished this book yesterday… and today, I couldn‘t remember finishing it. Am I stressed?! After working 12 hours today and my hub out of town, needing to walk the dog in the dark, we came upon a neighbor who has lit their house in Red White and Blue. 🇺🇸

Silly me, trying to read only romance to hide from election stress and I pick this! Not sure if 5⭐️ or if I am feeling generous- it did make me laugh.

What an interesting book, truly. Ah yes, a classic. But I honestly was so annoyed at the MC and his … predicament? That‘s not the right word. 🧐 Anyway, I didn‘t listen to this straight through; very happy I had the Cliffs Notes (ahem, written in 1963!!!) and almost maybe wish this could be a college level course exploring the author, this dang book AND the films 🎥 of which I hope to see someday. Might be a tough sell to Hub. 💖

BarbaraBB I think Annie Bot or Beautyland are possible contenders. I liked the first one, was underwhelmed by the second. But I am really not good in this guessing. You should ask @squirrelbrain 😀 6d
squirrelbrain I‘m not good at guessing the ToB books either - there‘s always so many (good) surprises! I think it‘s because it‘s a US-focused list. @BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes I can‘t wait for the list, to start the search for where I can get them from. Poor Deer is quite difficult to get hold of here but I do think it has a high chance of being on the list…. 🙄 (edited) 6d
squirrelbrain Others that I‘ve reserved in anticipation include: Irena Rey, I Cheerfully Refuse, Lesser Ruins, Blue Ruin, Sipsworth, Fruit of the Dead. I‘ve recently read Behind You Is The Sea and I‘m listening to Our London Lives, which could be possibles. 6d
BarbaraBB Thank you @squirrelbrain this is super inspiring! 6d
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - OH! I am super excited to see Sipsworth! SO interesting (and happy) that this book is so well loved. I have met the author - his books are quite good. 6d
BkClubCare @BarbaraBB TY - I love a good list. 6d
squirrelbrain That‘s a great list! @BarbaraBB This one is on there and I‘ve seen a LOT of hype about it so it could be on ToB. (Another one I can‘t get, of course) 6d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I‘ve read that one. It‘s a short story collection and although some are great, it didn‘t live up@to the hype imo 6d
sarahbarnes Thanks for all the tips @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB! I do know TOB tends to be pretty US-focused. I‘m hoping for a better shortlist this year!! The long list is always such a treasure hunt though. 📚 5d

Who has seen the movie?! 🎥🍿 I enjoyed this story and it reinforces my adoration for Blume - what an American treasure.

On page 22, our MC is looking for her geometry class on the first day of school. Hat tip to Bloom for Room 314 🤣

And on page 75, Aunt Bitsy is baking apple pie ❤️

Mehso-so

Romance reads for me must be totally consuming and ALL-IN! Or I just get bored and start skimming just to get to the end. This started fine but fizzled for me - the little sister character storyline got uncomfortable and the ending was abrupt. Okay then. NEXT✔️
