October: The Story of the Russian Revolution | China Miville
121 posts | 16 read | 3 reading | 60 to read
Acclaimed fantasy author China Miville plunges us into the year the world was turned upside down The renowned fantasy and science fiction writer China Miville has long been inspired by the ideals of the Russian Revolution and here, on the centenary of the revolution, he provides his own distinctive take on its history. In February 1917, in the midst of bloody war, Russia was still an autocratic monarchy: nine months later, it became the first socialist state in world history. How did this unimaginable transformation take place? How was a ravaged and backward country, swept up in a desperately unpopular war, rocked by not one but two revolutions? This is the story of the extraordinary months between those upheavals, in February and October, of the forces and individuals who made 1917 so epochal a year, of their intrigues, negotiations, conflicts and catastrophes. From familiar names like Lenin and Trotsky to their opponents Kornilov and Kerensky; from the byzantine squabbles of urban activists to the remotest villages of a sprawling empire; from the revolutionary railroad Sublime to the ciphers and static of coup by telegram; from grand sweep to forgotten detail. Historians have debated the revolution for a hundred years, its portents and possibilities: the mass of literature can be daunting. But here is a book for those new to the events, told not only in their historical import but in all their passion and drama and strangeness. Because as well as a political event of profound and ongoing consequence, Miville reveals the Russian Revolution as a breathtaking story.

Oh gosh @Avanders this is an Amazing package!!!! I am so excited for my #stacationintime #sit to Russia! Everything is perfect. You did such a cool job with the theme. The composition book is hilarious, the map is sooo cool, the candle smells great. The chocolate will be eaten shortly and I am super excited about these books! Also impressed you chose one I was reading!!!

Avanders Yay!! 👏🏽👏🏽 I‘m glad you like your trip through 1900-1918 (ish) Russia 😁 Also, let me know what your replacement choice is... or I can just pick something 😉 5mo

So far this book is brilliant. If someone would have told me I would find myself emotionally enveloped in a telling of the Russian Revolution, I'd have said that person was mad. That being said, this is one of my favorite authors telling the story, so perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised. To say I am deeply mystified by its unique narrative is an understatement.

Even though it was 100 degrees today I want to get cozy for the season. This is my October tbr. Any sugestions on where to start? The tea is the Anise in Wonderland, a cinnamon roobis tea with anise stars. It is very good. I added rock sugar but honey makes it too sweet.

I did think this book was well written, it was engaging as far as history books on this topic go but even though I try to care about it I‘ve just never read a book about the Russian revolution that jumped off the page at all. Maybe I should just stop trying to force myself to read about it 🤷‍♀️

post image

This is definitely well written and I know the Russian revolution is important but it‘s honestly hard for me to enjoy a book about a topic I just don‘t find very interesting

I‘m not sure what it is about Russian history that fascinates me so much, but I love reading about it. This was a very good account.
