Prayer for the Crown-Shy: A Monk and Robot Book
Prayer for the Crown-Shy: A Monk and Robot Book | Becky Chambers
102 posts | 103 read | 2 reading | 43 to read
A USA Today Bestseller! "Tender and healing... I'm prescribing a preorder to anyone who has ever felt lost. Stunning, kind, necessary." --Sarah Gailey on book 1: A Psalm for the Wild-Built A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is a story of kindness and love from one of the foremost practitioners of hopeful SF. After touring the rural areas of Panga, Sibling Dex (a Tea Monk of some renown) and Mosscap (a robot sent on a quest to determine what humanity really needs) turn their attention to the villages and cities of the little moon they call home. They hope to find the answers they seek, while making new friends, learning new concepts, and experiencing the entropic nature of the universe. Becky Chambers's new series continues to ask: in a world where people have what they want, does having more even matter?

As I was very disappointed in the first book of the series, I only read this one for the book club discussion. It is dull (

The follow up to A Pslam for the Wild Built, our intro to tea monk Dex and robot Mosscap. These two have a wholesome friendship, though from different worlds, and literally made up of different parts. A parable for getting along with others in our divided world. Add in some sweet moments, a robot‘s appreciation of nature, a hunky mechanic, and a traveling tea cart and you have an escape from our world with lovable characters. #auldlangspine

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️I found this book to be just as enchanting as the first in this series. The philosophy was a bit more straightforward in this one, or maybe I just knew more of what I was looking for, so in that way I liked the first book better.
But this is duology is one I'm glad I've read, & one I will definitely recommend.
Who knew a tea monk & a robot could teach you so much?
And that the teachings really would boil down to - you're doing just fine.

I read A Psalm for the Wild-built last year and loved it. I kept meaning to get to the second book and I have decided to finally pick it up. This is a book about a tea monk and a wild robot who asks what humanity really wants.

Another beautiful journey of the mind, exploring those ideas that are felt more often than thought.

quote
MarshmallowAdventures

“It was always a strange thing, coming home. Coming home meant that you had, at one point, left it and, in doing so, irreversiblely changed. How odd, then, to be able to return to a place that would always be anchored in your notion of the past. How could this place still be there, if the you that once lived there no longer existed?”

This book was so amazing I read it twice, as in finished it and literally went right back to the beginning to start again. The beauty and hope and healing and humanity in this book were like a balm to my spirit. I cannot recommend this series enough!

Another thoughtful, philosophical book about what it means to be human & how we engage with each other & the environment. At the core of this story, & the reason Mosscap, a robot, ventured out of the mountains after centuries of zero contact between humans & robots, is a single question, “What do humans need?” The answer, needless to say, is far from simple & as they travel together Dex & Mosscap will soon wonder if it‘s even the right question.

I think I accidentally read these books at the right time in my life, because once again I was crying at the end. It made think of my current emotional state and turmoil but the book treats its protagonists with such kindness. I adore it.

Throughly enjoyed escaping to a hopeful future on the little moon Panga, travelling along side Dex (the Monk) and Mosscap (the robot) as they set out in search of what humans need. This is the 2nd book in the novella series following “A Psalm for the Wild Built.” I think I actually enjoy this one more than the first.

I was so excited when my library hold for this came in 3 weeks early that I sat down and read it immediately. The first book had the magic of discovering something completely unexpected, but I think revisiting this world and these characters was even more enjoyable. Maybe because I read this one and listened to the first, 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

IndoorDame or maybe just because the continued character development was so perfect. Either way I‘ve ordered hard copies of both and plan to read them again. #JoyousJanuary #Pantone2023 #IcedMango #AuldLangSpine @Clwojick @monalyisha @SueK @Andrew65 1y
SueK Agreed. I loved this one even more than the first. I think because, as you said, the characters know themselves better, hence less angst and more reflective and cozy. I‘m happy you‘re enjoying these! They were my favorites of 2022. 1y

I love this series so much. I really hope that there will be more. The characters are so cute and there is such great exploration into the world and human nature. I love the gentle inclusivity and how well current cultural topics are woven into the plot for evaluation. Such a great content of moral lessons and such an inspirational story. Beautiful writing and just the absolute best construction. Incredibly cozy and heartwarming.

(2022) I haven't always been a fan of Becky Chambers's low-conflict, low-plot stories, but for some reason the Monk and Robot books hit a sweet spot for me. I find their friendship charming and just want to hit the road with them. This second volume reinforced that feeling, and I'm hoping for more adventures.

swynn Forgot to mention: this was my #BookSpin read for December. 1y

Sibling Dex and Mosscap are back! Can people have stress and existential crises in a world that satisfies their needs without the crippling weight of capitalism and overindulgence? Yes! Mosscap's question of what do you need is simple yet deep, and invites the reader to ask themselves.

If you've watched My Neighbor Totoro and thought it needed to be about grown ups thinking about their lives, well, this may be the book series for you.

I didn't think this was quite as good as the first Monk and Robot book but like its predecessor it does find a lot of depth in an unlikely friendship between (you guessed it) a monk and a robot.

I sniffled and cried my way through these two books. Understanding that you don‘t need all the answers or a complete and exacting plan in order to be living a good life can be one of the most difficult and confusing things to understand. But it was handled so well. And yet again, hugs all around. Excellent books!

This was another cozy read from Chambers. The plot, character growth, and ending were all satisfying. I loved the diversity and unique world building that critiqued our own world in ways. I appreciated that the author didn‘t try to drag the story out and asked a lot of questions that really made me think. A great read!

Chambers' world-building is phenomenal as usual and through it she creates a safe space to explore who we are, what a better world would look like, and how we can work towards one. She allows us space to be human; to realize it's ok to be human, ok to be confused, ok to make mistakes in the ongoing process of becoming ourselves and figuring shit out. Also, Mosscap is such a delight; I love it more every moment. (Feifei Ruan's cover art is perfect)

The second book in the monk and robot series was just as poignant, thought provoking and beautiful as the first book. The book.really asks very important questions about life and the future of our world. It's a mediative way to ask hard questions about the world. And Becky Chambers is brilliant in her way of getting us to talk about hard topics.

Bk5 of September is done! I‘m getting a head of steam up now🙌 Oh my stars. I want to live in this book so bad! Once again Becky Chambers has written a magical ecological & spiritual story. You wouldn‘t think a story about a human and a robot could have so much heart to it but it‘s very profound. At least to me it was. Totally recommend reading this series.
