The Lost Man
The Lost Man | Jane Harper
The gripping new novel from the author of the Sunday Times top ten bestsellers, The Dry and Force of Nature. He had started to remove his clothes as logic had deserted him and his skin was cracked. Whatever had been going through Cameron's mind when he was alive, he didn't look peaceful in death. Two brothers meet at the remote fence line separating their cattle farms under the relenting sun of the remote outback. In an isolated part of Western Australia, they are each other's nearest neighbour, their homes three hours' drive apart. They are at the stockman's grave, a landmark so old that no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron, who lies dead at their feet. Something had been on Cam's mind. Did he choose to walk to his death? Because if he didn't, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects... The Lost Man is the highly anticipated new book from the bestselling and award-winning Jane Harper, author of The Dry and Force of Nature.

If you put a Jane Harper book on your #DecemberTBR and start it 30 November, you will probably finish it 1 December! Especially if it‘s set at Christmas time. I also have about 7-8 more on the list to finish out the year, but I don‘t always stick to that so we‘ll see how it goes.

Anyway, if nothing else, this book reminds me that the Outback might be a nice place to visit, but I wouldn‘t want to live there!

I will never stop singing the praises of Jane Harper. She is one of the best contemporary thriller writers I‘ve come across. This book is a stand alone novel (not part of the series that began with The Dry) and is extremely hard to put down. I think you‘ll enjoy it.

The reveal was a bit formulaic without the character build-up to justify it. Still enjoyable reading but not as good as the author‘s previous books.

Jane Harper hits it out of the park again with this book. I really enjoyed the two books in the Aaron Falk series and this stand alone book did not disappoint either. She really knows how to pace a good mystery, reeling out information slowly as the tension builds. I love that her settings become a character in themselves, in this case the Australian Outback. I will continue to pick up anything that she writes!

MallenNC I agree 100%! When I first heard this was a stand-alone, I was disappointed but then I read it and loved it. Her pacing and sense of place are so enjoyable. 4mo
LapReader Aaron is indirectly mentioned in the book. Did you catch it? 4mo
Ncostell @MallenNC I had the same initial reaction when I heard that it was a stand-alone but quickly found that I enjoyed it just as much as the series. 4mo

Set amidst the deeply atmospheric scorching heat of the Australian outback, The Lost Man is a twisty thriller which will keep you guessing. Cameron, a family cattle farmer, is found dead next to a landmark which is surrounded by legend. His family tries to fathom his death. Did he deliberately walk away from his car, which was well stocked with food and water into the lethal heat or is there more to his mysterious death than meets the eye?

I was recently able to see Jane Harper at our local indie bookstore! I had finished The Lost Man earlier that day, and think this book was her best yet. She was lovely and thoughtful and personalised each book she signed. She also spoke a bit about the upcoming film of The Dry.

@MallenNC , @CarolynM , @ClairesReads - We chatted about this when I reviewed Force of Nature. I wish you guys could have been there with me!

How did I end up in holiday with 3 books by the same author?!

Well, I brought The Lost Man for me to read, The Dry for my husband to read and then found Force of Nature for Q9 yesterday, as I‘d previously read it on Kindle.

Jane Harper doesn‘t write ‘sweet‘ books but she was in my town at a literary festival a few years ago and I overheard two booksellers saying how lovely she was, so #sweetjane after all!

I just love Jane Harper's writing! I was equal parts hooked and unsettled the entire time. Harper's first book piqued my interest, her second book solidified that interest, and now with this third book I know that I'll read anything she writes. It's all in her ability to describe a setting so atmospheric you can practically feel the heat coming off the page. Really great stuff! (and perfect to keep me awake on my super early flight this morning).

Atmospheric, slow suspense, mental health issues and fraught interpersonal relationships: this #audiobook set in the outback 1,500 miles west of Brisbane hit all the right notes for me. I‘ve enjoyed Harper‘s earlier Aaron Falk mysteries, yet this one was even better because it‘s a standalone without a detective at the centre of it. Audio has a bonus interview track with both the author & narrator Stephen Shanahan. #Australian

It‘s really smoky outside and the air quality index in Edmonton is currently 4 and forecast to reach 7 later today—that‘s high risk—because of wild fires in Alberta. Jane Harper is so good; I enjoyed The Dry, loved Force of Nature and this was unputdownable; I read it in 24 hours. She writes such gripping page turners with a real sense of place. Despite typical wet/cold UK Bank Holiday weather, I could have been in the relentless heat of the Australian outback, her writing is so good. She got me with this one too; I genuinely didn‘t see the twist that was coming.

Freespirit This one was my favourite of hers so far. Hope the weather warms up for you😄 7mo
