The The Last of August
The The Last of August | Brittany Cavallaro
In this second brilliant, action-packed book in the Charlotte Holmes trilogy, Jamie Watson and Charlotte Holmes are looking for a winter-break reprieve after a fall semester that almost got them killed. But Charlotte isnt the only Holmes with secrets, and the mood at her familys Sussex estate is palpably tense. On top of everything else, Holmes and Watson could be becoming more than friendsbut still, the darkness in Charlottes past is a wall between them. A distraction arises soon enough, because Charlottes beloved uncle Leander goes missing from the estateafter being oddly private about his latest assignment in a German art forgery ring. The game is afoot once again, and Charlotte is single-mindedly obsessed. Their first stop? Berlin. Their first contact? August Moriartyformerly Charlottes crush, currently believed by most to be deadwhose powerful family has been ripping off famous paintings for the last hundred years. But as they follow the gritty underground scene in Berlin to glittering art houses in Prague, Holmes and Watson begin to realize that this is a much more complicated case than a disappearance. Much more dangerous, too. What they learn might change everything they know about their families, themselves, and each other

This is the second Charlotte Holmes novel I read this year. I enjoyed reading this novel so much. I loved the twists at the end of the story. I can‘t wait to see what happens in the next book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another thrilling chase, but I must say I didnt enjoy it near as much as the first book. The ending seemed so rushed and abrupt. Not what I was hoping. Interested in seeing how the 3rd book goes!

So...I've finally figured out how to explain this book...it's the Montague and Capulet's meet Sherlock Holmes in modern times.

I love that we have art fraud. I don't know why but I have always found the entire industry to be fascinating. I am at an absolute loss when it comes to Charlotte and Jamie...and Jamie's dad too honestly. They're all just such hot messes. I can't figure out what to do with them in my brain.

Scochrane26 This one is my least favorite of the four. I thought Jamie was too teen angsty. I really liked the next two. 2mo

I really like this updated take on Holmes and Watson although I‘m not 100% sure where it‘s going. This isn‘t as good as the first and felt much more like a stepping stone in a series. It‘s still fun though.

As good as the 1st? Maybe not but still good. I liked the complexity of the relationships- especially between Watson and Holmes. But every relationship was complicated and different from one another which is more true to life.
Of course an unexpected ending, Holmes-style.

I struggled getting into this one the first time I picked it up, and ended up listening to the second half on audio. The ending was a little abrupt and I wanted some more explanation, but it did surprise me. I enjoyed watching Jamie and Charlotte‘s relationship evolve.

Shley9225 You get more explanation early in book #3 (my favourite in the series) so don‘t despair!! 6mo

Let‘s be honest, all a book needs to get 5 stars from me is to be slightly funny and mostly intriguing. This book excelled in both categories. Honestly, I found myself laughing out loud several times and I couldn‘t wait to see the resolution. Like all good Sherlock stories, it was completely unexpected! Also that epilogue was 😱

Sometimes I come to faculty meeting early just to read 😂 also I got the new Peeps Swirl from Dunkin‘ and it‘s basically just sugar. A lot of sugar, which is funny because I always order cream and the flavor and no sugar so that it‘s not too sweet. Anyways this book is interesting but I think I forgot too many things from the last one and I need to read a recap.

I finished this one a while ago, but I‘ve been procrastinating on reviewing it because I‘m afraid I have too many feelings about the series to be thoughtful about it. I love our Charlotte and Jamie! I think this is weaker than the first book plot-wise, but it‘s very exciting and has some heartbreaking character development.

The characters were still as charming as ever. Jamie is an excellent narrator & Charlotte is as messy & hard & funny & smart as ever. Really liked getting to see August Moriarty, too. The plot ran away from me though, especially towards the end — I felt like two plots were squeezed into one book, & it was hard to tell which one to pay attention to. Still, the characters have me hooked so I look forward to the next one! ★★★☆☆.

I really really liked this sequel, and was 100% enjoying it right up until the very end. And then I got, like, SUPER confused. Like I-read-the-whole-ending-a-second-time-and-still-didn‘t-totally-understand-what-happened-confused. But up until that point I thought it was a pretty well done sequel, and as an FYI the ending is explained better early in the third book, so it‘s still worth continuing if you liked A Study in Charlotte.

Can you have books that you're just kind of ambivalent about? If so, this entire series is like that for me. Everything works. They're all good stories with an interesting twist on Holmes and Watson. There's good character development with good settings with good dialogue, but I think this is more of a "It's not you, it's me", situation. It's a pick because I don't have enough feeling for it to be a so-so.

Uncle Leander is missing. Charlotte's mom is sick. Charlotte and Jamie get involved in an art forgery ring while trying to find Leander. I loved the scenes in Prague with Jamie going undercover. Charlotte felt a little too mean to Jamie, which makes it harder to believe he would stay with her. And Charlotte's deductions and mastermind planning seemed a bit much at the end. I hope the next book features more closeness between Charlotte and Jamie.
