Unequal Affections: A Pride and Prejudice Retelling | Lara S. Ormiston, Ormiston Lara S Austen Jane
14 posts | 13 read | 40 to read
When Elizabeth Bennet first knew Mr. Darcy, she despised him and was sure he felt the same. Angered by his pride and reserve, influenced by the lies of the charming Mr. Wickham, she never troubled herself to believe he was anything other than the worst of menuntil, one day, he unexpectedly proposed. Mr. Darcys passionate avowal of love causes Elizabeth to reevaluate everything she thought she knew about him. What she knows is that he is rich, handsome, clever, and very much in love with her. She, on the other hand, is poor, and can expect a future of increasing poverty if she does not marry. The incentives for her to accept him are strong, but she is honest enough to tell him that she does not return his affections. He says he can accept thatbut will either of them ever be truly happy in a relationship of unequal affection? Diverging from Jane Austens classic novel Pride and Prejudice at the proposal in the Hunsford parsonage, this story explores the kind of man Darcy is, even before his proper humbling, and how such a man, so full of pride, so much in love, might have behaved had Elizabeth chosen to accept his original proposal.

What if Lizzie had said yes to Mr. Darcy‘s 1st proposal? That‘s the premise of this P&P retelling. I didn‘t love Darcy‘s proprietary attitude at the beginning of the book, but I felt both characters had wonderful growth throughout the novel. I don‘t always love Austen retellings, but this one kept with the tone of the original, expanding the interactions between our favorite pair. I loved seeing the way they learned compromise & patience together.

Okay, team #HappyReads, here are a few options for our next round. The tagged is a P&P variation that I read a long while back and know is 100% clean 😂 Indiscretion is an old favorite that I keep meaning to reread. The Shadowy Horses doesn't completely fit into our usual parameters - I haven't read this particular one, but I know Kearsley usually has a little bit of supernatural mixed into her stories. And of course, Wodehouse and Heyer - ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I have other options of both. I will say that Joy in the Morning is definitely high on my list of favorite Wodehouses, with perhaps the best opening line of all time.

So let me know if you have any thoughts!! @mabell @Chrissyreadit @julieclair

Chrissyreadit i Have read The Shadowy Horses- Kearsley is a favorite of mine- so any of the others! 1y
mabell I‘ve read and enjoyed the Wodehouse and Heyer, but happy to read again! Indiscretion also sounds fun! (I‘m trying to remember the opening line of Joy in the Morning now 😂) 1y

julieclair These all sound good, and I haven‘t read any of them, but I‘m leaning towards Indiscretion. 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @mabell @julieclair - I think I will go with Indiscretion - I've been meaning to reread it!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - “After the thing was all over, when peril had ceased to loom and happy endings had been distributed in heaping handfuls and we were driving home with our hats on the side of our heads, having shaken the dust of Steeple Bumpleigh from our tyres, I confessed to Jeeves that there had been moments during the recent proceedings when Bertram Wooster, though no weakling, had come very near to despair.“ 😂 1y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks Oh that‘s classic! 😂😂 I love it 1y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - Something about “peril had ceased to loom“ just sends me every time haha 1y

After reading Claudia Gray, I‘ve been on a bit of a Jane Austen binge. I found this title on Goodreads as a pride and prejudice retelling asking what would have happened if Elizabeth had accepted Darcy‘s first proposal. I was a little shocked this book started off as a fan fiction, it reads to me like a literary piece. I finished it in one sitting it was so good, with a lot more sexual tension and character growth for both than most retellings. ❤️

eeclayton I enjoyed this one too 😊 2y

While most of the variations I've discussed this month have been Kindle Unlimited fare, this is what I would consider a “legit“ variation, as it was actually published by a real publisher lol It shows in the finished product - this is a really excellent story. At Hunsford, when Darcy proposes, instead of losing her temper and telling Darcy just where he can get off, Elizabeth asks for time to consider his proposal. This alone is enough to make ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Darcy realize that maybe he's not the perfect catch he thought he was. Elizabeth accepts his proposal a few days later, but is honest about her feelings towards him. I think what I loved about this story is that in the original, Darcy and Elizabeth both have to learn their “lessons“ separately, but here they work together towards maturity and understanding. There is one especially wonderful conversation where Elizabeth explains to ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Darcy why all these people he considers “beneath“ him to still be worthy of his respect - but it's done so well, without making Elizabeth look like a shrew while she's telling him. I also loved that both of them realize that they have things about themselves that need to change - so many versions make Elizabeth basically perfect and only Darcy needs to get his act together, while the original shows us that Elizabeth also had a lot of ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) growing to do, and that's reflected here. At any rate, most of the versions I've discussed this month have been more just fun fluff - some verging on the ridiculous - but this one I really do quite highly recommend as being an engaging and enjoyable story.

What if Elizabeth accepted Mr. Darcy‘s first proposal, without loving him, and we got to experience their courtship?

This retelling of one of my favorite books is fantastic—the writing and story seem true to Austen and our beloved characters. It was published in 2014, and I may be imagining it, but it somehow had the feeling of the 2005 movie to me, which is a huge plus. ❤️

Such a clever concept! What if Lizzy had accepted Darcy's first proposal? This alternate version of P&P was intriguing and showed a whole new (possible) side of Lizzy and Darcy. I thought she did their arcs quite well and left their characters quite intact compared to many spinoffs and retellings. A light read I'd suggest for Austen fans who can handle a reimagining!
