The Member of the Wedding
The Member of the Wedding | Carson McCullers
The novel that became an award-winning play and a major motion picture and that has charmed generations of readers, Carson McCullerss classic The Member of the Wedding is now available in small- format trade paperback for the ?rst time. Here is the story of the inimitable twelve-year-old Frankie, who is utterly, hopelessly bored with life until she hears about her older brothers wedding. Bolstered by lively conversations with her house servant, Berenice, and her six-year-old male cousin not to mention her own unbridled imagination Frankie takes on an overly active role in the wedding, hoping even to go, uninvited, on the honeymoon, so deep is her desire to be the member of something larger, more accepting than herself. A marvelous study of the agony of adolescence (Detroit Free Press), The Member of the Wedding showcases Carson McCullers at her most sensitive, astute, and lasting best.

#12booksof2022

I only read 4 books in November, but 2 of them were excellent. McCullers managed to capture adolescence so well in her short novel; I just love her Southern Gothic style. Fasthorse‘s critique on smug “wokeness” was 👩🏻‍🍳💋. I listened to the audio production of the play and Liza Weil (Paris in Gilmore Girls) was the female lead- she nailed it 👌. Thanks to whichever Litten mentioned the play on Tgiving and got it on my radar!

“Now hoppin'-john was F. Jasmine's very favorite food. She had always warned them to wave a plate of rice and peas before her nose when she was in her coffin, to make certain there was no mistake; for if a breath of life was left in her, she would sit up and eat, but if she smelled the hopping-john, and did not stir, then they could just nail down the coffin and be certain she was truly dead.”

Happy New Year! If you know, you know.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much to @Weaponxgirl for reading this with me although I've proven to be the worst buddy in the history of buddy-reads! (I just need more time to read these days, bear with me)
McCullers has yet to disappoint me. She writes about the margins of society with a grace and sensibility unlike others. A pick for me! Especially enjoyable in long sittings.

Weaponxgirl No worries at all. I‘ve deliberately slowed down my reading this year to take pressure of myself. We can take any future buddy reads at whatever pace we want as sometimes I‘m slower than others. 😊 5y
Weaponxgirl Let‘s do a tbr shelf share sometime, we can pick books from each other‘s lists to go through as we have quite similar taste in fiction and it‘s great to read it with someone. 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl that's a great idea!! We do have similar tastes - I'm so glad we've been sharing our tastes with eachother! 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz me too! I‘m actually also quite glad you aren‘t as much of a speed reader others are as sometimes I‘m faster than others and then I need to slow down for a little while and kind of savour my books and then I feel bad if I‘m not on track. I have so many books I know I‘ll enjoy but need a kick up the butt to read. 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz I also dont know that many people in the real world who have tastes as similar to mine at all. I‘m normally the person known for reading something a bit different or odd and sometimes it pays off and someone will pick it up but often I‘m just sat there on my own unable to discuss something since I don‘t want to spoil it for others just in case. 5y

This month was full of amazing books for me and I can‘t pick a favourite.
Doing a buddy read of the tagged book with @ephemeralwaltz was a highlight as I‘ve been having trouble with fiction recently and this book was amazing!
Other highlights were in extremis and becoming.
Next month I‘m going to have to sneak in an extra book in translation as I like to have one in the mix each month.

Severnmeadows The Carson McCullers and Audre Lorde books- new to me, thankyou!😊 5y
ephemeralwaltz I'm so glad you enjoyed our buddyread!! Although I haven't been the best buddy hehe. Would you be up for reading this one? It works for translated fiction and it sounds incredible. I might read it in Spanish, though. We can plan it for June if we don't have the time this month. I'd love to share the experience with you! 5y
ephemeralwaltz But let's do Flannery O'Connor soon pleaseeee!

Weaponxgirl @Severnmeadows you are very welcome! Hope you like them as much as I did 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz yes! That book has been on my radar too! The flannery one doesn‘t have chapters and looks hard to break into pieces so should we do that one first? Then if we finish early we can make a plan for the other one? 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz lemme know when you‘re ready to start a good man is hard to find and if you want to also do a short story buddy read anytime. 😊 5y

#booksandvinyl this book takes place over summer and I felt summertime sadness was a good choice for this book.
This is my kind of fiction, it‘s mostly internal so not for someone hugely plot driven but the characters are just so wonderfully drawn. Not always likeable but that‘s how people are. There are wonderful parts in this that just drag you back into remembering that the main protagonist is a child. #mccullersbuddyread

Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz how did you find this?. I realised when I nearly finished that the atmosphere felt like a muggy summer day all the way through. That pressure on top that makes you tired and cranky. I feel like McCullers is just a author I can rave about all day as the more I think about this book the more I notice. Feelings I had, the artistry of how she hardly told me anything in a lot of ways but conveyed everything. 5y
arubabookwoman I thought the book was amazing in how accurately it conveyed what it felt like to be a 13 year old girl. 5y
Weaponxgirl @arubabookwoman yes! There were so many moments that perfectly portrayed someone trying to act like a grownup and then doing something that just showed how they weren‘t as mature as they were trying to be. 5y
See All 7 Comments
ephemeralwaltz Yes Shirley! Your comparison to a long sluggish summer day is spot-on. I just finished reading the forward by Ali Smith (included in this same edition) and oh boy, the more I think about it the more I realize how brilliant this book actually is. She conveys a lot with so little.
5y
ephemeralwaltz The third part of this was so interesting. I feel like the author gave us so much to think about in part 2 and then suddenly, in part 3 we have to accept that F. Jasmine's fantasies were just that, fantasies, and she relegates back to “Frances“ status (a sign of coming of age?). Plus, what is up with John Henry's passing? My heart broke in two. If that isn't the most blatant statement about the fragility of the world, then I don't know what is. 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz omg I was so upset! It was like that part of her childhood literally died as she then got a new friend and was excited about moving. I found her reaction really interesting, it was that distance from reality that is still quite childlike. That ability to just move forward and not completely understand what you have lost. Like her relationship with Berenice, leaving the things that have propped you up for so long. 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz and how she seemed so confused about them Berenice saying she didn‘t understand why he had to suffer so 😭. 5y

Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz lol, go for it. I did manage to read part 2 but I came off 3 night shifts today, had brunch with friends and then had a “nap” would be better to talk about when I‘m not completely out of sync with the world with a weird sleep pattern 5y

Weaponxgirl That‘s what I found last week, I found it so hard to put the book down. I really am a huge fan of this author and this kind of writing. It just makes me remember why I love fiction 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl yes! She is becoming one of my favorites. Looking forward to discussing part 2. F. Jasmine thinks we should buddy-read another one of her books (that you haven't gotten to yet!). Any suggestions? 5y
See All 15 Comments
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz for some reason she also makes me want to read more Shirley Jackson and southern gothic fiction (or just plain good gothic fiction) in general. I‘m sorry I‘m gonna spam you now with books that have caught my eye that I want to read... 5y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve only read the haunting of hill house and we have always lived in the castle by her and have a few of her short stories kicking about and for some reason these two feel like sisters to me so any buddy read for her would be amazing. 5y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve never read any flannery O‘Connor 😳 and I recently got my grubby paws on this classic 5y
Weaponxgirl How awesome does this book look?! 5y
Weaponxgirl The only other Carson‘s I own are this 5y
Weaponxgirl And this one and I would love to do a buddy read of these 5y
ephemeralwaltz @weaponxgirl !!! a shirley jackson buddy read sounds great as well. I LOVE her and haven't read much of her short fiction! AND YES TO FLANNERY O'CONNOR. I've never read her and A Good Man is Hard to Find sounds incredible. Let's schedule it!
5y
ephemeralwaltz @weaponxgirl I've already read Reflections in a Golden Eye (it was my first McCullers!) and I highly recommend that you just binge it. It's out of this world. You'll love it! (sorry for replying so late!) 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz what would you like to read first? I knew you‘d be a Shirley Jackson fan too! I can start something in may if you want? Thankyou for getting me back into fiction again. 5y
ephemeralwaltz @weaponxgirl what about this one? I'd have to get my hands on a copy of it. I'll check the bookstore I work at to see if we have it in stock!
5y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve got that one and just had a little look at it. It has 17 stories inside and I was wondering how you would feel about doing it at a slower pace. Say 2 stories a week with breaks if needed? That way we could really savour the stories although obviously it will take longer to read them but then we could get in a novel at the same time plus other reading we are doing? 5y
Weaponxgirl Also we could easily make that a thing and pick another short story collection for afterwards, either by her or other writers we like. I have so many collections I want to get to including daphne du maurier, Jean Rhys, Clarice lispector and the Russian author who‘s name I can‘t spell who wrote this. (Without her name in front of me I‘m lost) 5y

Finally got a chance to sit down and read Part 1 of this for our #McCullersBuddyRead! @Weaponxgirl How did you find it? What did you think of how our protagonist was presented?

ephemeralwaltz I wanted to comment on the circularity of how part 1 starts and ends. The first thing we get to know about Frankie is that for a long time, she hasn't felt like a "member" of anything, anywhere. And at the end of part 1 she affirms that she is a member of her brother's wedding and fantasizes about being a part of his relationship forevermore. 5y
ephemeralwaltz So a lot of her coming to terms with her ambition to be a part of something larger is based on her own fantasies she fabricates in her mind and the conversations she has with the maid, Berenice, who doesn't really take Frankie seriously, seeing her as a silly child. I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy the rest of this read because there's nothing I enjoy more than a good character study! 5y
ephemeralwaltz One of my favorite quotes was: "It was the year when Frankie thought about the world. And she did not see it as a round school globe, with the countries neat and different-coloured. She thought of the world has huge and cracked and loose and turning a thousand miles an hour." (P. 30 in my edition) Frankie feels small and insignificant and excluded from everything happening around her. 5y
See All 10 Comments
ephemeralwaltz She feels too old to sleep in the same bed as her father anymore, she doesn't have the patience she used to have with her 6 year-old cousin, and to top it all off, her brother decided to marry a girl without her! 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz I devoured this when I read it! The atmosphere was so menacing to me in that way it can feel when life is moving forward fast and there‘s nothing you can do about it. And I completely agree it‘s a full blown character study rather than a plot book but some phrases just made me stop and go wow. I think one part had about her having sadness like jazz and the imagery in those two words just made me go wow 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz I felt like her latching onto her brothers wedding was her trying to find a port of safety with all these changes she is going through and doesn‘t want to. It‘s hinted that she was sexually abused and I felt like this horrified her character and added to her wanting to not grow up without any direction. 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz her cousins character John Henry was perfect too, at first I thought he seemed a bit precocious for a 6 year old and then as the chapter went on he read as the little kid who hangs out with older kids and is acting older to fit in. The part with him on the porch and when he was given the doll or when he wanted to go outside and play were just perfect to me. (edited) 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl yes! I felt the same way about his character!! Each character is so well written that they contrast sharply with one another. 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl I'm loving how, in part 2, the author (through Frankie's thoughts) keeps making reference back to feelings and exact expressions Frankie used to explain her thoughts in order to emphasize the reflections and changes our protagonist is undergoing. 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz I‘ve only just started part 2 about halfway through and I‘m loving how her character is doing this and it just makes her seem more childlike and vulnerable. There is so much depth to everyone that is unseen. Like with her father and his drinking and a dead mother/wife. She is someone who really doesn‘t tell you much outright but it conveys multitudes 5y

So excited to finally be able to start the tagged book for the #McCullersbuddyread!
I‘m always reading more than one book at once and put my hold in for the Marie Colvin biography ages ago so must start that right away! I have a book of her journalism to go alongside whilst I‘m reading this.
I‘ve also got Marianna faithfulls memoir in my locker at work and a book of essays by Rebecca solnit to get to before it expires. Great start to April!

Discussions could be on Sundays, if that works well for you as well :) I'll post a small schedule soon. We can discuss part 1 on Sun the 7th!

Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz 😂😆 no worries, my brain only functions half the time too. Can I take a look at the chapters tomorrow? Wine head right now and I can‘t make any decisions in this state. But I‘m easy going with whatever we decide. 5y
ephemeralwaltz For sure! Enjoy the wine. I won't have my book with me till Tuesday so if you don't mind taking a look on your own until then that would be great! 5y
Weaponxgirl @ephemeralwaltz no worries. It‘s quite a short book so I‘m not sure how well it will hold up to a month long event but we can decide together when you have your copy too 😊 5y
Weaponxgirl the book is in 3 parts. Would you like to do a part a week for 3 weeks? 5y
Weaponxgirl The last part is quite short but gives people time to read at their own pace. Or we could do it by pages instead depending on what you like. Then the 4th week can be for catching up if necessary? 5y
ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl a part per week sounds great!! Absolutely. Let's do that and, if necessary, give us two weeks for the 3rd part+final thoughts. 5y

I don't understand the love for this. Honestly, I thought the girl was just psycho. I was mistakenly told that the play was the original format, so I read that (audio), not realizing it was abridged from the original novel. I most likely would have enjoyed the novel more. This version is actually an audio recording of a live performance of the play.

I enjoyed the language of the South, and the adolescent anxiety of Frankie. (Or F.Jasmine) This book is only 132 pages long, but I found the plot and the characters to be very well-developed. The dialogue is very honest, and her Black caretaker is more than a flat one-dimensional character.

This book is great not so much for what it says on the page, but for what it conjures in the recesses of your mind. McCullers is a master. This is the perfect coming-of-age tale from a girl's perspective.
