Dark Tales | Shirley Jackson
The perfect read for Hallowe'en, this new hardback volume of Jackson's finest stories reveals the queen of American gothic at her unsettling, mesmerising best
There's something nasty in suburbia. In these deliciously dark tales, the daily commute turns into a nightmarish game of hide and seek, the loving wife hides homicidal thoughts and the concerned citizen might just be an infamous serial killer. In the haunting world of Shirley Jackson, nothing is as it seems and nowhere is safe, from the city streets to the country manor, and from the small-town apartment to the dark, dark woods...

I was really into decades-old fiction for #scarathlon: I very much enjoyed Dracula with Dracula Daily and revisiting Mary Stewart with the #sundaybuddyread crew. The tagged book of short creepy tales by Shirley Jackson provided such wonderful little bite-sized diversions that I think it was my fav book experience overall. But wow! Look at all those books read under the fearless leadership of @Clwojick : 24446 points for #SpookyGhostClub 🧛‍♀️🎃🖤

I‘m joining #outstandingoctober in the hopes that it will give me that little bit of third quarter energy I need to work on some #trappedinaspookyhouse books like the tagged! So far, 2 stories down in this one, and a few audiobooks that I still need to review - but I‘d like to read all 5 from @TheAromaofBooks and the extra three I moved from that list to #castthedie @PuddleJumper we‘ll see how it goes 😊🎃 #scarathlon

My list for #trappedinaspookyhouse are all books I own and should have read already ☠. I've asked for my match to pick 5, and they will all go on my tbr... which will leave me with 15 that I'll use for #castthedie (after I eliminate 2 that I'm not feeling, hah!). I *think* the tagged is what I'm most excited about... but we'll see!

Why yes, I AM already gearing up for #scarathlon, why do you ask? 😏

I always think of Jackson's The Summer People around this time of year. I posted about the delightful, & strange, serendipity of this story a couple of years ago under the tagged book if interested. I looked to see if it's available online for free, alas it's not. But it was the subject of a recent The Monster She Wrote podcast episode:

I like to listen to LeVar Burton Reads when I fold laundry and decided on this creepy Shirley Jackson story about two friends who get pulled into a picture. It was definitely creepy and a bit mind bending. The background music added to the podcast was a great effect. Of course LeVar's commentary afterwards was deep and inspired. Laundry is an adventure with a kitten, who is always up to shenanigans. #votedearlyreadathon

My Halloween night: hiding with the lights off from the few potential trick-or-treaters that may be out there, eating a portion of the gigantic shrimp fried rice I picked up today (it was a craving), reading another few stories in this book & watching Enola Holmes on Netflix & Saturday Night Live. Not a bad way to spend an evening.

PurpleTulipGirl When I was in college, there was a tiny Chinese restaurant across the street from the campus, and they had the best shrimp fried rice. Big shrimp, and always exactly the same number; once, they didn‘t have enough and the guy promised to make it up to me in my next order, and he did. They seasoned them with something that made the shrimp taste so good. 3y

Brilliant short stories. The writing, edginess, suspense, the detail.. the feeling of being left stunned after each one.
I did like The Haunting of Hill House , but these stories are on another level for me. I think Shirley Jackson is a bit of a genius ... how did she think up all these scenarios??!!!! Loved this book of stories.

batsy She is a genius 💜 4y
Cathythoughts @batsy I think she is 👍🏻❤️ 4y

One of my favorite instances of book serendipity occurred two years ago. I was at work on Labor Day & I read Shirley Jackson's story “Summer People“ on my Kindle. I read it in Jeff & Ann Vandermeer's collection The Weird, but it is also included in the tagged book. I have only read it once & I have never been able to forget it. It has lodged in my brain like a splinter. Has anyone else read this? Unfortunately it's not available online or I'd link

LeahBergen I‘ve not read it but I have this book. I read one (fantastically weird and good) story from it when I bought it but need to pick it up again! 4y

This is a fine collection of stories by an author who has great talent in making the mundane unnerving, nightmarish, unsettling. Some make me gasped, others make me wondered at their ambiguity..still, the best of her collection I‘ve read so far, and in quoting Dorothy Parker.. “Shirley Jackson is unparalleled as a leader in the field of beautifully written, quiet, cumulative shudders.”

Current autumn spooky reads.

By the way: do Americans go trick or treating and celebrate Halloween today, the Saturday before, because "it's really not so convenient on a school night" or is this just an English thing?

#halloween #spookyreads #shortstories

Aimeesue Most communities go trick or treating on the 31st, although there are a lot of Halloween parties on the weekend before, too. 5y
xicanti In Canada, everybody goes on the 31st or not at all. I've always had the impression it's the same in the US. 5y
cherinium It depends on where you live. In Ohio, where I grew up, each community would set a "Beggars Night" for trick or treating. They would even set the times--usually 6-8pm. It was never on the 31st. I was once told that it had something to do with trying to keep mischief to a minimum. Living in Missouri now and having friends from other states, I now know it is much more common for people to go out on the 31st. 5y
See All 6 Comments
Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Haha. Same for Bonfire Night. "Yeah, we'll remember, remember the fifth of November, but we're going to do our remembering on the third of November, thank you very much" 5y

Pickpick

Eerie, creepy, psychological thrillers. When you start a story, you have no idea where she‘s going to take you, but you have to appreciate her sharp, snappy twist endings! Each one could easily be a Twilight Zone episode.

Pulled into reading some short stories by Shirley Jackson!! “Paranoia” is the current short story being emailed in installments by http://theseasonofstories.com . I looked into my *The Lottery* to see if it was in there, but it is not. It‘s in the tagged book (*Dark Tales*). Jackson is perfect atmospheric reading for today‘s overcast weather with rain expected later on!

ValerieAndBooks BTW the last short story from them was wonderfully creepy and I‘m definitely on the lookout for this one by Mariana Enriquez 6y

Mehso-so

A collection of Jackson‘s short stories. Some were really great while others were rather lacklustre. I don‘t know if I would call them “dark” to be honest. Her writing is good but I don‘t think any of these stories will stay with me like “The Lottery” or “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” have. I am not discouraged from reading more but wouldn‘t probably recommend this one to people.
