#WhyInTitle #NewYearNewBooks @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘ve only read the first essay from this collection, in which he gives his definition (actually his 14 definitions) of a classic. But it‘s shattering and uplifting all at the same time, so I really what to read the rest of this sometime.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Sounds good! 3mo
Eggs Awesome 👏🏻 3mo

Interesting article for anyone considering reading “classics” anytime soon. Also, some great suggestions/links to other “classics” at the end.

Our first freeze is coming tonight, so I‘ve brought in the potted plants and pets, covered my tomato plants that are somehow still alive in the garden, and cuddled up on the couch with a #nonfiction pick I‘ve had on my shelf for a few years. I‘m really not sure why I originally picked this one up, I‘ve never been overly interested in literary criticism, but it‘s good so far!

Was surprised to find these cool editions of several classic novels at Barnes & Noble. At first I thought they were journals/planners, lol.

rabbitprincess They totally do look like planners! 6y
Soubhiville I think so too @rabbitprincess ! Very pretty though! 6y
Mdargusch Gorgeous! 6y
Faibka @rabbitprincess @Soubhiville I totally thought they were planners when I saw them from a far and immediately thought I should get one, lol. When I saw they were actual books I decided to get one! 😆 6y

Ok @Sarah83 I‘ve submitted my #LitsyClassics list and I‘m posting it here too. I did it with a mix of titles and authors. There‘s a couple of re-reads but it‘s been decades since I read them the first time. I did use Asimov twice because I‘ve not actually read anything by him.

Sarah83 Great choices 😎 6y
Chelleo Love that doodle!!! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Chelleo It‘s part was of the book. I have all sorts of journals and I thought maybe I should actually use them. 6y

Let's find out!

Louise I just listened to an excellent lecture about Calvino's INVISIBLE CITIES. It's part of the Great Course called A Day's Read on Audible. 7y
vivastory That's one of my favorite books of all time @Louise 7y
Louise Oh, wow, @vivastory! Now I want to move it higher up my TBR list. He has a lot of interesting titles! He can represent Italy in my #ReadingAroundTheWorld challenge. 🤓 7y

Is there a Classics club or reading group here on Litsy?

Shemac77 I'd like to know too. I'd join! 7y
Caterina I'd join as well! There's a group reading Persuasion right now, and another reading East of Eden, but I don't know of a classics group. 7y
Bookworm83 I'm cohost of @litsybookclub but we don't always read classics. We did read Rebecca last year which was good! Someone should start a classics book club...I'd join! 7y

10 books I have read.
One is a lie.
Which book is it? #10books
1. Lord of the Flies 2. Dracula 3. Crime and Punishment 4. To Kill A Mockingbird 5. Emma 6. Fahrenheit 451 7. Great Expectations 8. Brave New World 9. North and South 10. Animal Farm

neet_reads Umm, there may actually be 2 lies! Honestly can't remember if I've actually read Great Expectations or just watched many adaptations!! 7y
moranadatter Dracula? 7y
neet_reads @moranadatter Nope, I've read that one a couple of times 7y

Eyelit Brave new world? 7y
neet_reads @eyelit Nope, read that one in school 7y
neet_reads I like to think that my lie is the one book you'd least suspect, as I feel like nearly everyone has read it or at least watched the very famous movie of it (I've done neither) 7y

For #diversereads I decided to focus on nonfiction because while I've made great strides in improving the diversity of my fiction reads, this is an area where I'm still struggling a little. These are some I like (I particularly love the Calvino, which is a series of essays about why books are cool, essentially and High on the Hog, which is a history of African influence on American food), and if you guys have recs I'm all ears. #booktober

Because this is where the harshness of reality took rest and the imagination was left to wander freely without hesitation or limitations. From the Odyssey to Dracula to Jane Eyre and Sherlock Holmes; you fell in love and found courage, your heart was broken and then you were newly mended. Anything was possible and fear was conquered if you just believed in yourself. For some, these words offered hope in desperation.

It seems there's a Calvino for every occasion. I haven't got the time for whole books that are related to my exam papers, but a chapter or two in this quenches the worst of my literary thirst.

Simona @DennisJacobRosenfeld I steal your book recommendations and breakfast ideas...take the picture so, that I can see fully-book and breakfast 😉 8y

DennisJacobRosenfeld You're most welcome 😃 I still have two birthday parties planned for when I'm done with my exams 🎉 I expect a mountain of books. 8y
Simona @DennisJacobRosenfeld So, you have a "birthmonth" only to get some more books⁉️ I like your plan? 8y
DennisJacobRosenfeld @Simona I find it rather ingenious myself. One can never have enough books. 8y

[Definition] 13. A classic is a work which relegates the noise of the present to a background hum, which at the same time the classics cannot exist without.
