The Forbidden Garden
The Forbidden Garden: A Novel | Ellen Herrick
17 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 57 to read
Perfect for fans of Kate Morton and Sarah Jio, comes a lush imaginative novel that takes readers into the heart of a mysterious English country garden, waiting to spring to life. Every garden is a story, waiting to be told At the nursery she runs with her sisters on the New England coast, Sorrel Sparrow has honed her rare gift for nurturing plants and flowers. Now that reputation, and a stroke of good timing, lands Sorrel an unexpected opportunity: reviving a long-dormant Shakespearean garden on an English country estate. Arriving at Kirkwood Hall, ancestral home of Sir Graham Kirkwood and his wife Stella, Sorrel is shocked by the desolate state of the walled garden. Generations have triedand failedto bring it back to glory. Sorrel senses heartbreak and betrayal here, perhaps even enchantment. Intrigued by the houses historyespecially the haunting tapestries that grace its wallsand increasingly drawn to Stellas enigmatic brother, Sorrel sets to work. And though she knows her true home is across the sea with her sisters, instinct tells her that the English gardens destiny is entwined with her own, if she can only unravel its secrets

4⭐️I debated on 3..but the lovely descriptions of the gardens, plants, and food bumped it up. (See my priorities there). A Shakespeare garden with a tragic past and is deemed “toxic”. Sorrel Sparrow has a magical gift with plants and grasps this escape to revive this English garden gem. She soon learns the story that this garden is hiding and has to find a way to reconcile the past. If not, then there is no salvation for this garden or ghost.👇🏼

Jess_Read_This Thoughts: The story turns fanciful and frankly, rather absurd. The pacing changes and things seem odd kilter in the plot. The dialogue gets a wee dramatic at times as well. I feel compelled to issue a warning on that. However, it is a lovely story and worth a read! (edited) 6y
Lizpixie This is the 2nd book about the Sparrow sisters. The first one was better I thought. 6y
Jess_Read_This @Lizpixie You are the second reviewer that mentioned that! It‘s on my list bc there were quite a few references to what happens in The Sparrow Sisters. I loved the beginning of this one but it kind of shifted midway through and seemed rushed. 6y

#ReadingResolutions #BookAndFlowers #BookSequel

Combining two prompts to catch up. My easiest flowers are from this bush in the backyard and there are also pretty flowers on the book cover. 💐The Forbidden Garden is a sequel to the author's The Sparrow Sisters. I didn't know & read them out of order which always drives me crazy 😜but I really liked the book so it was worth it to go back and read the first book.

Lizpixie I loved this series and hope she writes another soon🌸 6y

Another beautiful story about the Sparrow sisters, I'm hoping that because the ending is so open there will be more stories about the magical sisters from Granite Point. I flew through this so quickly I wish there were many more to read, that's the joy & frustration of finding a wonderful author that's still writing. They can't keep up with our reading! If gardening, manor houses, romance and a touch of Magic are your thing then look no further.💫

Another beautiful garden map! I have always wanted a walled garden. Ever since I was little, my favourite books had walled gardens in them, Toms Midnight Garden, The Secret Garden. There's something magical about a hidden garden with gravel paths, fruit trees in the corners, fountain in the middle & raised flower beds with lovely seats to relax on & the air full of perfume, birdsong & buzzing bees. Sigh.🌹🌸🌻🦋🐝🐞

Straight into the second book about the Sparrow Sisters, this one is Sorrels story. Sorrel Sparrow is hired to restore the walled Shakespeare garden at Kirkwood Hall & she is shocked by its condition. Determined to bring the garden back to life, she has to not only work on the plants, she also has to undo the heartbreak at the heart of the garden. Can't wait to dive back into the lovely Sparrow sisters stories. Thanks to @DebinHawaii for the recce

#SparklingMayBookishDreams #day3 #FlowersOnCovers These are two of my prettiest books with flowers on the covers. Honestly, both of them were #judgeabookbyitscover buys, it's a bonus, thankfully, that the stories inside those covers are as beautifully written as the cover promises.

maich I only read Wintersong😊 7y

Lovely book full of beautiful & deliciously detailed garden & food descriptions, a mysterious English garden under a possible family curse, & a little magic & mystery thrown in. My only complaint was not realizing sooner that this book follows the author's The Sparrow Sisters & my bookish OCD-self wishes I'd read them in order.😬My book tour review is paired w/Asparagus Risotto w/Sorrel-Spinach Pesto. Book mail from the end of last week through today-all for upcoming blog book tour reviews. Yes, there are 2 copies of The Hidden Garden an #arc & a finished copy that was sent when the arc was delayed since my review is next week. Perhaps a giveaway is in order?💐📚 I'm looking forward to all of these. I've been meaning to read American Gods for ages so hopefully having a review date scheduled & the upcoming Starz series will 'get 'er done.'👍😆
