I couldn‘t get through this one which is a shame cuz I usually love the Kopp sisters. That might be the problem tho-it wasn‘t about the Kopp sisters. They were a small part and I got POV from two minor and new characters. I didn‘t even see a mystery. I finally quit and will try book 4 instead. Let‘s get back to the Kopps!

Liked the premise more than the execution. Very interesting (in an infuriating way) to learn how young women were treated by the law back then, and I liked how Constance handled the situations. Also really liked the girls themselves, particularly Edna. But the storyline around Fleurette running off to join a vaudeville act grew tiresome, & the characters of May Ward & Freeman Bernstein were too heavy handed. Still enjoyed tho, will read on. 3/5 ⭐️

It called to mind the work that enormous rats might do, if such creatures existed.

Young women were being locked up for months, and possibly years, over offenses that amounted to little more than leaving their parents‘ home without permission, or carrying on with an unsuitable man.

Constance couldn‘t help but notice that the unsuitable men were never arrested for their part in the crime.

lynneamch Oh my! "Inconvenient" women being locked up reminds me of another fascinating read 4y

I loved the first book in this series, and liked the second one, though it was definitely not as good. But the synopsis on this third volume sounds really interesting. Plus I love these covers!

KathyWheeler I have checked out this book several times and haven‘t got far in it. I think it was me — not the book. I‘m going to try it again when I‘m more in the mood for it. 4y

The story and writing style made this a pleasure. It made me think about my definition of a "fulfilled life" and it made me even more appreciative of the women who made my ability to aim for my definition of fulfillment a reality.

This seemed a logical continuation of the sisters' story. As Constance continues to embrace her job, it's natural she'd become preoccupied w/the cases of young women looking for non-traditional lives. It's just as natural that Fleurette would seek a life on stage. Everything flowed so well that I found myself turning page after page. And the varied storylines allowed for a lot of introspection, as well as humor while jumping back & forth.

This is my final book for #booked2018 ! Happy to say that it was also from the mountainous #TBR pile! This is Book 3 of a series based on the real life of sisters who lived in New Jersey in the early 1900‘s. Miss Constance Kopp became somewhat a celebrity due to the fact that a female assistant sheriff, who carried a gun and wore a gold star was quite unusual for the period! Despite the lack of respect that she faced, Constance was a #underdoghero

I‘ve had so much fun binge-reading the Kopp Sisters series by Amy Stewart! Each novel is different, not only plot-wise as you‘d expect but also structurally. The first book is slow-building suspense and backstory of the MC, the second is a chase story, and this one has multiple POVs—most interesting are two young women, reprimanded by their parents just for trying to live independently, who fall under Constance‘s supervision at the county jail.

alysonimagines P.S. @AmyStewart if you‘re reading this, I would love to read a spin-off novel about Edna and Minnie, these two young women who pass through Constance‘s care. Where they‘re headed sounds super interesting! (edited) 6y
alysonimagines @lahousewyfe Yay! Maybe we can convince her. 😄 6y
AmyStewart @alysonwrites I get that request a lot, actually! 6y
alysonimagines @AmyStewart I guess a lot of your readers are quite intrigued by them, myself included! You‘ve drawn two fascinating characters who are especially fascinating side by side. ☺️ 6y

I really loved how this book wove together so many different (and very distinct) young women‘s stories. The historical aspect is very well handled — shades of Angela Woollacott in Edna‘s views of her work! This series would be one for a list of books with female main characters and no romantic plot as well.

So far, the thing I‘m finding most interesting is the commentary on prison as reformative vs. punitive to be particularly interesting, especially given the similarities to modern day thinking. There is also much discussion of which is worse- prison or war. And what is women‘s role in either/both? I‘m only a chapter in and I love it already.

Deputy sheriff Constance Kopp is 1916‘s answer to the feminist movement. In this third book of Amy Stewart‘s wildly popular series, she takes on the archaic morality laws of the time. Based on the true life story of the Kopp Sisters, these books keep getting better and better. As long as Stewart keeps writing them, I will be reading them.

This was an excellent choice for my first read of the year!

Constance Kopp returns in the third installment of this series, and is fully embracing her role as deputy sheriff. She's doing everything in her power to help the women that end up in her prison, and is coming into conflict with ideas of how young girls should behave.

Loved this and can't wait for the next one!

A (very) light detective read based on true events. Set in 1916 against the backdrop of WWI, the story follows Constance Kopp, a female deputy sheriff, who stands up for girls charged with waywardness. Then her youngest sister runs away from home and challenges Constance's beliefs.

While this was the least action-packed of the books so far, it was chock full of interesting social commentary of a time when illegal cohabitation was a crime, and girls could be arrested for waywardness if they tried to assert their independence. I did like that Fluerette got a bigger role, and that we finally saw the specter of war. Hope there's more to come!
