Night Watch | Terence David John Pratchett
11 posts | 42 read | 18 to read
One moment, Sir Sam Vimes is in his old patrolman form, chasing a sweet-talking psychopath across the rooftops of Ankh-Morpork. The next, he's lying naked in the street, having been sent back thirty years courtesy of a group of time-manipulating monks who won't leave well enough alone. This Discworld is a darker place that Vimes remembers too well, three decades before his title, fortune, beloved wife, and impending first child. Worse still, the murderer he's pursuing has been transported back also. Worst of all, it's the eve of a fabled street rebellion that needlessly destroyed more than a few good (and not so good) men. Sam Vimes knows his duty, and by changing history he might just save some worthwhile necks--though it could cost him his own personal future. Plus there's a chance to steer a novice watchman straight and teach him a valuable thing or three about policing, an impressionable young copper named Sam Vimes.

Night Watch (Revised) | Terry Pratchett, Terence David John Pratchett

My second Pratchett of the year and honestly it could've been the third or fourth. Such wonderful character growth and powerful themes along with the usual hilarity.

“But the grannies, oh, the grannies... It had almost been cheating, putting them on the parapet with a megaphone during the lulls: ‘I knows you're out there, our Ron! This is your Nan! You climb up one more time and you'll feel the back of my hand! Our Rita sends her love and wants you to hurry home. Grandpa is feeling a lot better with the new ointment! Now stop being a silly boy!‘”

julesG Don't underestimate the grannies! 🦧 2mo

“One thing Vimes was learning fast was the natural vindictiveness of old ladies, who had no sense of fair play when it came to fighting soldiers; give a granny a spear and a hole to jab it through, and young men on the other side were in big trouble.”

julesG I really enjoyed Vetinari in this one, this time around. And I don't really know why. 2mo
willaful Well that's new. I don't think Pratchett has ever made me cry before. (Except his biography.) 2mo

julesG @willaful It's happened to me too. This one and Shepherd's Crown 😭 2mo
willaful I can't remember if I read this one before, which makes me think I must not have, though it might not have made such a strong impression when I was younger. I think this is one of his best books.

I loved the symbolism of the case. Vimes is so resistant to the trappings that came with marriage to Sybil that it was good to see one he truly loved, that represents how much she cares for him, and becomes a lifeline.

willaful And I loved his recognition and acceptance of the fact that it's time to let himself be more than a copper. He has to be a husband and father too. 2mo
BookmarkTavern @willaful I loved that too! His constant little reminders of what he was missing. Sybil and Sam is my favorite romantic couples Pratchett wrote. 2mo
kwmg40 Finally finished this one after waiting some time for a library copy. I really liked both the character development and time-travel aspect, with older Vimes looking back (in a literal way) at young Vimes. 3w
julesG @kwmg40 🦧🎉 it is a good book. 3w
julesG @kwmg40 I liked that old Vimes didn't try to heap too much knowledge of the future onto young Vimes's narrow shoulders. He mentored and trusted the rest would fall into place. 3w

Pickpick

Realized I never posted my review of this for #SummerEndReadathon! In this Discworld installment, Sam Vimes gets "timenapped" and sent into a pivotal event from his past. You can see how these memories shaped Sam's moral code (which doesn't always match the legal code!) and personality, and understand why he needs that reminder right as he's becoming a father.

Shameless picture of Watney in his comfy spot!

"Sam Vimes sighed when he heard the scream, but he finished shaving before he did anything about it."

Innocuous beginning before Sam goes across the multiverse!

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Also kind of amused at the book tag's insistence on Terry Prachett's full name! 2y
