A powerfully moving novel from a three-time Newbery Honor-winning author Evie Thomas is not who she used to be. Once she had a best friend, a happy home and a loving grandmother living nearby. Once her name was Toswiah. Now, everything is different. Her family has been forced to move to a new place and change their identities. But that's not all that has changed. Her once lively father has become depressed and quiet. Her mother leaves teaching behind and clings to a new-found religion. Her only sister is making secret plans to leave. And Evie, struggling to find her way in a new city where kids aren't friendly and the terrain is as unfamiliar as her name, wonders who she is. Jacqueline Woodson weaves a fascinating portrait of a thoughtful young girl's coming of age in a world turned upside down A National Book Award Finalist

TheAromaofBooks You're on quite the Woodson binge this month!!! 3y
KarinWestbrook I have discovered that I like to deep dive! Once I find an author I like, I want to read everything. I did that recently with Wallace Stegner. Enjoy! 3y

A family torn apart by one night, one incident, one choice to stand up and do the right thing and we see it all through the eyes of the youngest daughter. This book deals with racism and police brutality, but I feel the author does an amazing job of making it very accessible to younger readers.

This is one of my favorites by her. 💚

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 4y

Glad I decided to give this a re-read. I first read it when I was 12 and it has stuck with me all these years.
I'm kind of a sucker for those coming-of-age type stories, or stories of young people figuring out who they are when something big happens to them.
And I love Jacqueline Woodson. I'm looking forward to her next middle grade book

Another incredibly well done book by Woodson. A young Black girl and her family move from their home under the witness protection program after her father agrees to testify against his fellow police officers after a young unarmed Black child is killed. This book talks extensively about identity, change, race, serving as an officer and family! Really well done.

TheNextBook @JSW as the daughter of retired cop, this is hitting home. I com from a family of cops. I know there are amazing cops out there. But I also know that not all of them are good cops... 7y
JSW @TheNextBook As a white girl I grew up hearing that cops were the people to go to when I needed help. Now I know that isn‘t true for many folx. It makes me feel sad, angry, and hopeless. It‘s complicated and heartbreaking. Which is just all a way of saying can I sit with you and hold your hand? (edited) 7y
TheNextBook @JSW as long as we can have drinks in the other hand then yes! 7y

This one has been on my classroom shelf for a while, so I finally decided to dive in. The story is moving and makes you appreciate what you have and aware that things can change. I think my middle grade students will find this engaging.

Laura317 I love the cover. 💕 7y
