85 Years of the Oscar: The Official History of the Academy Awards
85 Years of the Oscar: The Official History of the Academy Awards | Robert Osborne
11 posts | 2 to read
A deluxe, year by year chronicle of the Academy Awards, with an entertaining text, hundreds of star studded photographs, and complete lists of the nominees and winners. "85 Years of the Oscar," newly revised and expanded, is the official history of the Academy Awards. Following an introductory chapter on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the birth of the Oscars, the book presents the story of each year's awards, beginning with the very first, for the years 1927 28. Author Robert Osborne surveys the movies in competition, recounts the speculation on various winners, and describes events during the awards ceremony. He also provides a complete listing of the all the nominees and winners in every category. Each year is illustrated with evocative stills from winning films and candid shots from the awards ceremony. Altogether, the book features more than 750 rare photographs, including original movie posters for every best picture. Drawing on Osborne's profound knowledge of film, the Academy's exceptional archives, and the personal reminiscences of stars from Katharine Hepburn to Clint Eastwood, "85 Years of the Oscar" is unrivaled in illustration, accuracy, and completeness."

Not book related but whilst nightshifts suck sometimes, when they are quiet and you can read the guardians live streaming blog and hear that Olivia Coleman won a bloody Oscar it‘s f*ing amazing!
She‘s a local gal for me and just a wonderful actress! I squealed with happiness and got told off by my workmate. Love her ❤️😍

Cathythoughts Yes ! Just listening to the news there ... I hear she wasn‘t prepared to win & yet gave a great speech ! Must go & see this movie. Just said on the news too that the same company are starting filming Sally Rooney‘s Normal People in the Autumn ( I loved the book ) 👍🏻♥️ 6y
Weaponxgirl @Cathythoughts she is great in it and I loved the first half in particular. I wasn‘t so sure about the ending personally but I think it‘s something everyone should see for themselves. I really want to read that book! (All the books) 6y
Cathythoughts I just listened to her speech & she has me in tears - she definitely was shocked to win ♥️♥️♥️ 6y

Weaponxgirl @Cathythoughts honestly everyone I know was like yes she has a nomination but we didn‘t think she would win it. Not because she doesn‘t deserve it but Glenn close seemed to be more of the Oscar award winner type. 6y
CarolynM @Weaponxgirl I'm delighted for her. I've thought she was great every time I've seen her but her performance in The Favourite is extraordinary. @Cathythoughts I think you'll enjoy the film - it's unusual but in a good way🙂 6y
Cathythoughts @CarolynM yes! It‘s on here at the moment... must try to get to it 👍🏻 6y
KarenUK So happy for her.... and loved the film 💕 6y
GingerAntics 💙💙💙 I‘m still so excited and shocked. What did she win for? I didn‘t know she was from your neck of the woods!!! That makes it even more exciting. God I love Olivia Coleman. 💙💙💙 6y
GingerAntics If I could jump on this bed without breaking it, I would right now. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved her acceptance speech. So real. Now I need to see the film. 6y
Weaponxgirl @CarolynM she has so much range, I‘m always impressed when someone I see as a comedy actor then can transition to drama seamlessly. She‘s just so deserving 6y
Weaponxgirl @KarenUK I‘m so so happy for her. I thought both Emma stone and Rachel Weiss were great too. It was such a strong cast in that movie. 6y
Weaponxgirl @BarbaraTheBibliophage that was a talking point with me and my friends when she got nominated. We were saying she would give a great speech and she didn‘t disappoint! 6y
Weaponxgirl @GingerAntics the favourite 😁 yes, I only found that out recently and I felt like an idiot when I thought about the fact her last name is Coleman and Norwich is well known for Coleman‘s mustard 😂 6y
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 6y
readordierachel So happy she won!! 6y
Weaponxgirl @readordierachel the best result from the oscars this year! 6y
MicheleinPhilly My wife and I literally gasped when her name was announced. Such a delightful surprise. 6y

At Alamo seeing GET OUT! It‘s our second time... we saw it when it was first released like a year ago and tonight the theater is doing a special release of it again! After all the reviews and all of the current discussions I can‘t wait to see how it lands with me now. I loved it the first time. So smart.

I hope it wins its category!

batsy I love this movie so much. Reading Hari Kunzru's White Tears made me think of it again. 7y
BooksForEmpathy @batsy I need to read that!!! Are you liking it?? 7y

We're also ecstatic that Mahershala Ali won for Best Actor last night for his performance in Moonlight.

He's an incredible actor and also the first Muslim to win an Oscar for acting. ☪️

#BlackHistoryMonth

Hooked_on_books I haven't seen any new movies lately, but I have enjoyed watching him in The 4400 and House of Cards. 8y
LitsyFeministBookClub @Hooked_on_books Moonlight is well worth the watch! It's available on Amazon Prime. But yes, he's fantastic in House of Cards! 8y
ChasingOm Thank you @Hooked__on__books, I could NOT place him, lol. 😂 8y
Alicia @Hooked_on_books @ChasingOm he's also in Marvels Luke Cage!! And amazing in that as well! 8y
readordierachel Moonlight was such an amazing film. So glad he won! 8y

Did you guys watch the Oscars last night?

What a wonderful victory for Moonlight, the first LGBT film to win for Best Picture, and a phenomenal film adapted from the unpublished play titled In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

In their speeches, Tarell Alvin McCraney and Barry Jenkins dedicated the film to black and brown boys and girls and non-gender conforming kids. 💙🌈

Well that was totally bananas! 😮

KassKho I still don't understand! 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk My brother was in town so we watched it together again for the first time in years and at the end we were both shaking our heads saying "What?" over and over. La La Land was nice, but not Best Picture material. Things turned out for the best. 8y
booksandsympathy They apparently have two envelopes for each winner, one on each side of the stage. So they mistakenly gave Warren Beatty the second envelope for Emma Stone instead of the proper envelope. 8y
