The Pale Horse | Agatha Christie
39 posts | 56 read | 26 to read
When an elderly priest is murdered, the killer searches the victim so roughly that his already ragged cassock is torn in the process. What was the killer looking for? And what had a dying woman confided to the priest on her deathbed only hours earlier? Mark Easterbrook and his sidekick Ginger Corrigan are determined to find out. Maybe the three women who run The Pale Horse public house, and who are rumored to practice the Dark Arts, can provide some answers?

After tonight‘s Agatha Christie bingo, I‘m shockingly inspired to read one of her many books.

The Pale Horse is a 2010 TV adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Miss Marple story featuring JJ Feild. I loved it.

While not a Poirot book, Ariadne Oliver makes an appearance—which makes it that much better. This one had witchcraft and a bit of a romance and a fun reveal.

I never know what to expect of Christie books that don‘t have Poirot or Marple. I‘ve noticed the police are more competent in non-Poirot books. Christie uses a character to talk about mystery writing in the first part of this story, but then it goes into possible occult events. I didn‘t know before reading that this story has 3 “Witches” in it. Not her best novel, it‘s a little slow, but still a pick. 16 pts #scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick

4/5. Tight, constantly moving mystery that satisfied my conditions for a mystery: a twist I didn‘t see coming, an eerie atmosphere, lurking danger, and a protagonist I gave a damn about. #AgathaChristie #mystery#ThePaleHorse

There was so much potential, but this Amazon adaptation fell flat for me. And, they made the main character into a horrible person. 👎
I guess lunch is over now and I better get back to work (in other words, swap out my robe for a sweater for my next zoom meeting 😁).

Gissy The environment looks to comfy, with your shoes, various books near to you, tv and apparently comfy chair, yep, perfect place!👌 5y

Will the Amazon series be as good as the book? Stay tuned...
I already see LOTS of differences just from the trailer. I fear I might get annoyed.

It took me a little while to get into this one (not the book's fault). Once I was able to concentrate I really enjoyed this book. As usual I did not guess the murderer.

TEArificbooks Just saw an article about how The Pale Horse saves a baby after Christie died. A sick baby went to hospital and doctors were stumped. But the nurse was reading that book and recognized the type of poisoning and saved the baby. 5y

Wow! Look at that vintage cover! 😍🦇📙
I'm not a Christie fan, but spotting this on the charity books table in the Co-Op near my dad's house, I couldn't not chuck 50p in the collection bucket and take it away with me! 😁

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is a great cover. 5y
vivastory Is it a Tom Adams? He had a run on Christie covers & quite a few of them look like psychedelic horror novels 5y
Bookwomble @vivastory there's no artist credit in the book but after a bit of internet digging, yes, it is Tom Adams 😊 https://beautifulbooks.info/illustratedbibliographies/illustrators-and-authors/c... 5y

Verity @charl08 oooh. I haven‘t see that. Have you seen him as Seth in Cold Comfort Farm back in the day? 🤤 5y
Blueroseis Started to watch this on TV last night and turned off after 30 minutes. I can't remember Agatha Christie writing F words in any if her books and I didn't like the lead actor that much as he always seems to act in the same way. 5y
Verity @Blueroseis oh dear. That‘s disappointing. I have it recorded to watch at some point... 5y

I adored this one.

Black magic. Macbeth‘s witches. A violent scene that made me squirm and want to hide my eyes.

There is absolutely nothing light and simple in this Christie book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not your typical Christie by any means. The time period is later and the setting juxtaposes the modern Chelsea/London with a bit of the traditional country. It's a wild ride with supernatural musings and possible happenings that the "grounded" narrator and "rational" reader are puzzled on just how to think. Was it murder? If so, how was it committed and by whom?

Rachbb3 Good one! 8y

I just picked this up in a thrift shop - a Christie I don't have, yay! So far it is very different than her standard setting and characters. It is a Mrs. Oliver (who I like) but the time period is circa beatniks. No tempora mutantur, Agatha!

#17booklove #AuthorILove I absolutely ❤️ Dame Agatha Christie. This is part of my collection; three stacks deep.
@jess.how

TheWordJar I'm embarrassed to admit I've never read an Agatha Christie book. 😳 And I know I'd love them! Any suggestions for which one to start with? 8y
LizzyM Such awesomeness! 8y
Lizpixie Ooh a Dame Agatha virgin!😂 I'd start with The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd or Taken At The Flood @TheWordJar 8y

Minispok 😍😍 8y
Lizpixie I've been collecting the Word editions like these and also the Classic Crime Collection trilogies from the 80s as well @erzascarletbookgasm 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @TheWordJar Oh, you need to pop your Agatha Christie cherry! 😂 So many you can start with..some feature the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder on the Orient Express), the sweet Ms Marple (A Murder is Announced, Body in the Library) or the ones featuring Tommy & Tuppence (start with The Secret Adversary). 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @TheWordJar But I guess I will recommend that you read And Then There Were None. And watch the BBC series tv adaptation thereafter! 😊👍🏼 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @Lizpixie -- is one of my top three favourites of AC! 😊 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @Lizpixie it's perplexing that they publish different titles in different countries, but I collect all different titles! Not so particular about the editions though. I saw your collection, awesome! 😍 8y
hlgreenfield The Queen of Crime will always be one of my favourites! She got me into liking mystery novels, which are probably the books I read the most now! That is a particularly awesome collection! 8y
TheWordJar Thanks so much for recs, @Lizpixie and @erzascarletbookgasm! And I'm always up for a good BBC adaptation! 8y
erzascarletbookgasm @hlgreenfield thanks! Yes, AC is the one that spark my love for mystery novels, too. 😊 8y
