WTF?: What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us
WTF?: What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us | Tim O'Reilly
12 posts | 2 read | 3 reading | 11 to read
WTF? can be an expression of amazement or an expression of dismay. In today's economy, we have far too much dismay along with our amazement, and technology bears some of the blame. In this combination of memoir, business strategy guide, and call to action, Tim O'Reilly, Silicon Valley's leading intellectual and the founder of O'Reilly Media, explores the upside and the potential downsides of today's WTF? technologies. What is the future when an increasing number of jobs can be performed by intelligent machines instead of people, or done only by people in partnership with those machines? What happens to our consumer based societies--to workers and to the companies that depend on their purchasing power? Is income inequality and unemployment an inevitable consequence of technological advancement, or are there paths to a better future? What will happen to business when technology-enabled networks and marketplaces are better at deploying talent than traditional companies? How should companies organize themselves to take advantage of these new tools? What's the future of education when on-demand learning outperforms traditional institutions? How can individuals continue to adapt and retrain? Will the fundamental social safety nets of the developed world survive the transition, and if not, what will replace them? O'Reilly is "the man who can really can make a whole industry happen," according to Eric Schmidt, Executive Chairman of Alphabet (Google.) His genius over the past four decades has been to identify and to help shape our response to emerging technologies with world shaking potential--the World Wide Web, Open Source Software, Web 2.0, Open Government data, the Maker Movement, Big Data, and now AI. O'Reilly shares the techniques he's used at O'Reilly Media to make sense of and predict past innovation waves and applies those same techniques to provide a framework for thinking about how today's world-spanning platforms and networks, on-demand services, and artificial intelligence are changing the nature of business, education, government, financial markets, and the economy as a whole. He provides tools for understanding how all the parts of modern digital businesses work together to create marketplace advantage and customer value, and why ultimately, they cannot succeed unless their ecosystem succeeds along with them. The core of the book's call to action is an exhortation to businesses to DO MORE with technology rather than just using it to cut costs and enrich their shareholders. Robots are going to take our jobs, they say. O'Reilly replies, "Only if that's what we ask them to do! Technology is the solution to human problems, and we won't run out of work till we run out of problems." Entrepreneurs need to set their sights on how they can use big data, sensors, and AI to create amazing human experiences and the economy of the future, making us all richer in the same way the tools of the first industrial revolution did. Yes, technology can eliminate labor and make things cheaper, but at its best, we use it to do things that were previously unimaginable! What is our poverty of imagination? What are the entrepreneurial leaps that will allow us to use the technology of today to build a better future, not just a more efficient one? Whether technology brings the WTF? of wonder or the WTF? of dismay isn't inevitable. It's up to us!

My audiobook just told Alexa to play Ballad of a Thin Man, by Bob Dylan. Seriously. It was in the text.

Makes you think. I'm proposing @LisaCarey's next novel include the phrase “Alexa, please send Tim Spalding $1m dollars!“

Aimeesue 😂 5y
CouronneDhiver Awesome. Joys of technology 5y
Swe_Eva 🤣 5y
TimSpalding @vanderwal Since Litsy has no DM, I'll leave the note here :) — Don't know if you remember me; long-time no see! 5y

Finally reading Tim O'Reilly's WTF. It's been so long since I was impressed by a tech title—except for history. I love O'Reilly and consider him a rare voice of intellectualism and humanity in the field. So here's hoping… #removeme

WTF??? I just logged onto Goodreads (which I generally love) and noticed a buttload of books had been added to my TBR list yesterday, and not by me! I mean, I don‘t know how anyone but me COULD add anything to my Goodreads account, but I know I didn‘t do it! Has this ever happened to anyone else??? Please excuse me why I go change my password. 😡

BlameJennyJane Wow. I would be flipping out too. 6y
cobwebmoth That's unsettling. 6y
RachLovesTV Weird!! The problem I have been having lately is that when I change a book to "read" it says I've read it twice, even when I only have one set of dates entered, and no amount of editing will let me change the read count. ? 6y
See All 22 Comments
Gezemice That is very weird! Yep, definitely change the password! 6y
Gezemice @RachLovesTV I have that, too. Go to edit review, and remove the second set of read dates. There is a little x next to it. I hope this helps! 6y
GarthRanzz You didn‘t scan any books to look them up did you? GR has this stupid thing of automatically adding scanned books to your TBR that I hate! 6y
GypsyKat @GarthRanzz The only books I scanned yesterday were books I was purposely adding. And some of the books listed I hadn‘t even heard of! 6y
GarthRanzz That is crazy! I think I need to go check my books to see if they‘re having a problem. I haven‘t added anything this week so I would hope my TBR still reflects that. Maybe changing your password is a good idea. I wish they‘d tell you how they were added; web browser or app. 6y
Pamwurtzler Did you enter a giveaway? I did that the other day & GR added all those books to my TBR. 6y
AshHisson Did you enter any giveaways? Those titles are now automatically added to your shelf, where in the past you had the option to add or not. 6y
GypsyKat @Pamwurtzler @AshHisson I didn‘t. The only thing I did yesterday was scan a few books to add to my TBR list. All I can figure is that some wires got crossed somewhere. But I‘ve changed my password just in case. 6y
Pamwurtzler So weird. But changing your password is a good idea. 6y
AshHisson @GypsyKat Hm, what a mystery. Hope is was just a glitch with the scans. I think I‘m going to go double check my account now too. 6y
GypsyKat @AshHisson I‘m guessing that‘s what it was because that‘s the only thing I did on there yesterday. It‘s so weird though, because I use the scan feature all the time. I keep my phone out in bookstores just for that reason and it‘s never done anything like that before. 6y
GypsyKat @GarthRanzz And also I double checked the scan feature tonight after changing my password. I can still scan things to look them up and it doesn‘t automatically add anything to my TBR, so at least it seems to be working properly now. 6y
LibrarianRyan They changed giveaways now any you register for automatically get added. You can go in and delete them but it's a pin in the rear. 6y
LibrarianRyan Another thought. Is your Amazon account linked to your Goodreads account? They could be automatically adding things based on ebooks your purchased previously. 6y
GypsyKat @LibrarianRyan I have never entered Goodreads giveaways, and no my Amazon isn‘t connected, although that at least would be helpful if it would automatically add my books from Kindle, Audible, and ComiXology. But like I said, I feel like it was just a glitch in their scanner. Hopefully it won‘t happen again. 6y
LibrarianRyan @GypsyKat hopefully it won't. I know Amazon has thought about adding an auto function to liked Kindle accounts. It came up in a survey I was doing for various ebook platforms. Good luck with everything. 6y
GypsyKat @LibrarianRyan Well, I made my own list on Goodreads “owned-TBR” so any time I buy something I add it to the list. And thanks! 6y
Itchyfeetreader This happened to me and was an amazon thing - it also helpfully fired everything onto Facebook. Switched that off pretty quickly !! 6y
RachLovesTV @Gezemice Yeah I've tried that multiple times. It just keeps reverting to "Read 2 times." ?‍♀️ 6y

swishandflick I don't think it's Litsy specific though, I'm getting the same thing when I open Spotify 6y
Jess7 Oh yikes! 6y
Jess7 Is it just a message that pops up or does it prevent you from logging on? 6y
swishandflick @Jess7 it doesn't prevent you from logging on, but it's pretty annoying. Lol 6y
DGRachel Yes! It‘s freaking me out. 6y
rockpools YES! Every time I open Litsy. 6y
Lcsmcat I was about to re-start my phone, but if it‘s happening to everyone I don‘t think that will help. 6y
Sarah83 Androids doesn't have this problem 🤷 6y
LibrarianRyan Yep. I thought it was just my phone. Good to know. Thanks. 6y
Laughterhp Yes! I keep getting this and was just thinking, I hope it doesn‘t process and pay for something I didn‘t do! Glad to know it‘s not just me! 6y
dsfisher Yes!!! 6y
GingerAntics That‘s weird. I must have just missed this little bit of excitement. 6y

Ok. I tried that Google Arts and Culture thing twice and both times I got this guy. Really, Google? Would it have killed you to fudge the results just a little? Maybe someone needs to write a little white lie function into this program. 😂😂

SilversReviews Wow. LOL!! You look much better than him. (edited) 6y
Rachbb3 I need to try this. Lol. 6y
Redwritinghood @SilversReviews Thanks, but this seemed about right for my life. 😁 6y

ghosthost I‘ve noticed when using Google‘s image search that their algorithm has more trouble with black and white photos. 6y
Redwritinghood @pilardib Thanks! Those are hilarious. I should add mine. (edited) 6y
Redwritinghood @Rachbb3 It could be interesting. 😜 6y
Redwritinghood @ghosthost OK. Let‘s blame it on that. 😉😉 6y
tournevis At least you got the biggest male actor star of his day! He was a worldwide celebrity back then. 6y
ghosthost The tool did a thing and got bad results. Therefore, it‘s the tool‘s fault. I reserve the right to retract this statement if I try it and get Kate Beckinsale. 😉 6y
AmyG I did this. Google also insulted me. 6y
Redwritinghood @tournevis So maybe they made the match based on my dramatic flair! 🤣🤣 6y
tournevis @Redwritinghood There you go! 6y
Laura317 I was likewise insulted. Ugh. 6y
hermyknee How do you do it? I downloaded google arts and culture and I can‘t find it 6y
Redwritinghood @hermyknee Once you open the app, you have to scroll down a bit to find it. It says “search with your selfie”. 6y
Redwritinghood @Laura317 @AmyG Glad to know it‘s not just me. 6y
LeahBergen OMG. Thanks for the laugh! 😂😂😂 6y
Redwritinghood @LeahBergen No problem. I‘m thinking of making that my profile pic now. It‘s been making me laugh all day. 6y
Redwritinghood @ghosthost Of course! 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
ghosthost Google seems to think I‘m most like some woman‘s impressionist self portrait, but I also got Portrait of an African Man by Jan Jansz Mostaert so I‘m really confused. Perhaps Google is trolling us. 6y
merelybookish I was totally confused when I saw this was your profile pic! 😂😂 You are way cuter!! 6y
Redwritinghood @merelybookish Thank you! It made me laugh so hard and I thought it would make a good profile pic since it looks so like me. 🙄 (edited) 6y
SandyW @AmyG Google insulted me as well. However, yours may officially take the cake @Redwritinghood 6y
AceOnRoam Lol, I thought I would have to guess which literary character or novelist you were honouring today with your new pic. It's a terrible match, did you try again? 6y
AceOnRoam @hermyknee its only available for certain 'locations', I also cannot see the functionality. 6y
Redwritinghood @AceOnRoam I tried it a couple of times and got the same result. It‘s kind of silly but it made me laugh. 6y
ElleSkel Don't feel bad, my best matched are always graffiti art! 6y

Pickpick

I picked this up because I‘m interested in the way technological advances affect us. I took away a greater understanding of many things: how algorithms shape services & society; Uber & other ride share schemes; Google maps; workplace shift scheduling software; dealing with fake news; how raising the minimum wage improves the economy, etc. Concepts like super money & venture capitalism are not as easy for me to grasp. Optimistic #audiobook. 👍

About to embark on this #audiobook with some trepidation. The social impacts of new technologies part interests me, but I‘m worried it will be too focused on business.

Reggie Omg don‘t watch the mini videos on the weather channel while you check the weather. There is a company building a floating nation because as the century ends the sea level should have risen 4 ft already. Also by 2050 because of the 3.9 global temp increase Earth will start becoming a desert. 6y

WTF USPS?? My BOTM was shipped from Pennsylvania and I live in the same state. Yet my package is now in Massachusetts... 😩

Mdargusch How can that be?!?! No wonder USPS can‘t make any money. 6y
alisiakae That has happened to me before. But a shout out to York, PA!! For better or worse, that is my childhood hometown. 😃 6y
RiotMom I have an Etsy package that‘s been “out for delivery” since last Friday. 😩 I haven‘t even checked #botm because I‘m terrified. 6y

#TBRtemptation post 10! Just released. This is a memoir, business strategy guide, and motivational aid, all in one. What's the future look like with increasingly intelligent machines in the workplace? Will income inequality continue inevitably? How will education change with on-demand platforms? How will social safety nets fare? How will Big Data affect the medical industry? And many more questions are considered. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
