People's History of the Vampire Uprising
People's History of the Vampire Uprising | Raymond A Villareal
47 posts | 37 read | 105 to read
A virus that turns people into something somehow more than human quickly sweeps the world, upending society as we know it. This panoramic thriller begins with one small mystery. The body of a young woman found in an Arizona border town, presumed to be an illegal immigrant, walks out of the town morgue. To the young CDC investigator called in to consult the local police, it's a bizarre medical mystery. More bodies, dead of a mysterious disease that solidifies their blood, are brought to the morgue, and disappear. In a futile game of catch-up, the CDC, the FBI, and the US government must come to terms with what they're too late to stop: an epidemic of vampirism that will sweep first the United States, and then the world. Impossibly strong, smart, poised, beautiful, and commanding, these vampires reject the term as derogatory, preferring the euphemistic "gloamings." They quickly rise to prominence in all aspects of modern society: sports, entertainment, and business. Soon people are begging to be 're-created, ' willing to accept the risk of death if their bodies can't handle the transformation. The stakes change yet again when a charismatic and wealthy businessman, recently turned, decides to do what none of his kind has done before: run for political office. This sweeping yet deeply intimate fictional oral history--told from the perspectives of several players on all sides of the titular vampire uprising--is a genre-bending, shocking, immersive and subversive debut that is as addictive as the power it describes.

Disappointing. For a vampire book, this is a story that goes no where, has no action, and definitely no excitement. Honestly, I should have DNF'd it at page 88 (end of Chapter 4) and saved myself some time, but I kept waiting for the uprising.

But it‘s off my TBR! So onto the next book 🎃👻

Book 5/12 of my Spooktober TBR

Larkken I love that cute little demon sticker 😍 6mo

A People‘s History of the Vampire Uprising by Raymond A Villareal is a great postmodern horror novel.

I'd definitely recommend it.

A good read if you like vampire stories! These aren‘t the openly evil we‘ll kill you all vampires. Instead they‘re doing it off page, whilst infiltrating the top tiers of society to try and take control. Really interesting approach.

Centique Sounds like one I should try! 2y
TrishB @Centique give it a go 😁 2y
bthegood sound like a different approach to the story - stacked - thx for the review 🙂 2y

Day 20 of #21DaysofHorror
Today was by far the hardest day yet in terms of choosing what book to post. Since I started my daily posts 3 weeks ago I have known from the beginning what my final post will be, making today the last day that I can improvise if the mood strikes. I have always loved books that work with forms in interesting ways. One form that appeals to me is the oral biography: both fiction & nonfiction. In horror the oral bio is👇

vivastory a bit of an outlier, which is odd considering the success of World War Z. One of my favorites is Villareal's People's History of the Vampire Uprising. I read this shortly after publication 3 years ago & since then have been anticipating another book by Villareal. A CDC investigator is called to Arizona following the disappearance of a body from a morgue. This is the beginning of an epidemic that soon spreads to the rest of the world. (edited) 2y
vivastory This book went in a different direction than I expected & I loved it. A fresh take on vampires & a memorable entry into the slowly growing collection of horror oral biographies. (Image taken from Google Images) (edited) 2y
wanderinglynn Sounds intriguing. 👍🏻 2y

vivastory @wanderinglynn I went into it not expecting a whole lot & was pleasantly surprised. 2y
Reggie Lol, I went to go look it up because I think I bought it after last time you mentioned it and there it is on my kindle….waiting. Hopefully soon. 2y
vivastory @Reggie I'll be curious to see what you think. There's another horror novel in the same format that I've heard great things about & hope to read soon (it's on my Kindle) 2y
Reggie Aww I‘ve only read Waking by the Moon by her and it was wonderful. I just stacked the one you mentioned. 2y

I liked this book, especially the audio performance, but the ending was a let down. So many things that seemed promised never occur. But, I was still drawn to each character's stories. I wish the narrative had also included a gloaming's pov... but obviously the book title would then have been a lie, lol.

I liked the unique focus on the legal quandaries that integrating vampire and human lives would incur. Some of this book was a little dry and lengthy, but overall, I thought it was an original spin on vampires and I was into it. The author made me care about the characters while keeping me at a distance from them, which I found skillful.

So, I‘m brand new to the app and decided it‘s about time I post something! Sorry It‘s not the most aesthetically pleasing picture, lmao. I just got home from my first day at work and had some time to relax and read while it storms outside. I‘m not very far into this read, but I appreciate the quick and casual pace as it doesn‘t feel like there‘s been a sacrifice to the plot to achieve it. Anyway, happy reading!

I gave this a more than fair shot (150 pages) to capture my attention but it just plain didn‘t. A World War Z style history of a vampire outbreak should check a lot of boxes for me but this lacked suspense and felt disappointing.

This is an alternate history telling of the vampire uprising reminiscent of World War Z. It mainly follows a CDC doctor who discovered the vampire virus, an FBI agent over vampire crimes, and a priest part of the Catholic resistance to the vamps. There's also fun parts following the political climate and vampire civil rights. Super interesting and really fun!

Started this last night. A random pick from the library's New Book Shelf. A fictional history of a vampire virus spreading across North America, told in a series of first person accounts, interviews, articles, and other documents. A la World War Z though not quite as suspenseful for some reason. 🤔

I was planning a trip to Seattle this weekend but that fell through. So I started planning my #24b4Monday stack.👆 Then got an invite to a friend's beach house. Not sure whether I'll go but I can at least get some reading in regardless. These books are due back in 10 days & I won't be able to renew but I'd like to flip through them, read as much as I can. Plus I have some unfinished business on my Kindle that needs finishing.

BeansPage Very nice. Just post whenever you can sweetheart no worries no stress 🤗 5y

I'm a sucker for a good oral history novel. Villarreal doesn't disappoint. His ability to inhabit each character & to present a variety of sources in convincing language is remarkable. Easily one of the smartest & original takes on vampires that I've read in awhile. I need the next one!

I‘m really enjoying this one. Basically follows the idea of what would happen if a Vampire virus became a real thing. Rather than everyone turning into blood sucking bats, instead it focuses on what this may look like as people try to live life in this new way and how those who don‘t deal with it. It is told through interviews and personal stories. Very inventive!

Political and social satire that doesn't bring much new to the vampire genre. This is very World War Z-esque, just not as good. There were good things and bad. The author is a lawyer, so there was a bit of legal stuff I zoned out on, and the plot was lacking. I don't think it reached its potential, but is a good warning of the dangers of giving in politically to the 1%. A solid 3 stars. Good on audio as well.

July is off to a bad start. I‘ve given this book 145 pages and I‘m done. It‘s reminiscent of World War Z, but with vampires instead of zombies. The writing is tolerable, but I find myself bored and not really interested in how things played out. I checked other reviews to see if I should force myself to keep going and saw that apparently this is going to be a series. I definitely don‘t have the patience for a sequel. #unpopularopinion

A virus emerges which turns people into vampires, or “gloamings.” With a structure somewhat like World War Z, this book traces the spread of the gloaming virus into the population and the struggles to accept vampire-like people. This is not scary and not meant to be—it‘s more a societal commentary. I really enjoyed it.

We went to Charleston last Fri. on a spur-of-the-moment trip. Only enough time for a few good meals and browsing at Blue Bicycle Books. What a cool store! This is the main room in front, but there is a lined hallway, a few rooms off the hallway, and a back storeroom full of cool books. Great collection of used and rare in great condition and fun organization interspersed with photos. I only got one book (tagged) but was super excited to find it.

Yes, yes, and yes! This is the book as a vampire fan I‘ve been waiting for! Told in an #epistolary format similar to World War Z, this book describes the rise to power of the Gloaming (aka vampires). It‘s been a while since a vampire book hooked me (not counting rereads of classics like ‘Salem‘s Lot) and this one succeeded.

I will say that this book needs to state CLEARLY on the cover that it is the first of a series, because it does leave you completely hanging. Which is cool, because it's a great start to a new imagined world and I look forward to seeing where the next installment goes. I do hope it is not a year between books though.

This is kind of a cross between World War Z and True Blood but the humor is decidedly gallows (think tv's Gotham).
