⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The first time I read this many years ago, it dragged and really lost my interest. Indeed, it *is* slow-moving, but since having the immense pleasure of listening to Bragg speak last year, I realized that that‘s just his tempo. It‘s that charming, slow, southern drawl. Damned nearly a character itself. This is about his early life, family, and incredible journalism career. Loved it!

DAY 5 #Sorry | I‘m *not* sorry that this is the last soccer practice of the season. It‘s dark and chilly and I‘m over it. At least I have my book blanket and reading material. Loving this reread! ⚽️🥶🧤

@Cinfhen

Megabooks Yay soccer being over!! 🥳🥳 6d
ljuliel Such a good book ! 💕Did you read Ava‘s Man too ? 6d
britt_brooke @Megabooks One more game on Saturday and it‘s official. 👏🏻 The games are a lot more fun than practices after a long day of school. Hope you‘re recovering well!! 6d

britt_brooke @ljuliel Not yet, but soon! I heard him speak last year in Nashville and was smitten with his drawl. He‘s such a great storyteller. Have you read The Best Cook in the World? I loved it so much. 💚 6d
ljuliel Yes I have. I have the book and the audio. His books in audio are fantastic since you get to listen to his accent . I only wish all his audiobooks were unabridged. Some of them are only available in the shortened version. I don‘t ever buy them. I like to hear the whole book. 😊 6d
Megabooks @britt_brooke Thanks! I am doing well! 😊 6d
britt_brooke @ljuliel It‘s so good on audio. And yes, I‘m with you ... was planning to listen to this one on audio but it‘s abridged. No thanks. I want the whole thing! 6d
britt_brooke @Megabooks Happy to hear it! 💚 6d
Cinfhen I remember when those last games of the season rolled around!!! Couldn‘t wait for it to be over!!! 6d
britt_brooke @Cinfhen This season has been great, but it‘s really dragged these last couple of weeks. 😩 They‘ll have a few weeks off then start basketball for the first time in January. We‘ll see how that goes! Then spring soccer after that. Busy boys. 💚 6d
Cinfhen For me, the carpools were THE WORST!!! I enjoyed the sports but all that shlepping around the neighborhood drove me INSANE!!!!!! 6d
britt_brooke @Cinfhen We‘re not to that point yet since the boys are still pretty small, but I‘m sure that‘ll be us one day. 😬 5d

⏳What is your most special family heirloom? ⏳I got to go through old photos with my grandma, yesterday. I love getting to know family history and the stories they bring. I don‘t know a lot of my family history, but what I can learn I cherish it. My favorite heirloom is my great grandma‘s cookbook. It is filled with old family recipes of dishes I‘ve never heard of and the most cherished part is the hand writing of all the women who wrote them.

JazzFeathers What a fantastic treasure. 10mo
tracey38 That sounds so sweet. Glad you got to have that special time with her. 💜💜 10mo

No big deal- just had breakfast beside Rick Bragg and got his autograph for the wonderful and amazing @Kaye he asked me to tell him something about you and I said “she calls herself an old grump” 😂 He sends his best! I will mail this to you when I get home.

Kaye Doggone, Jody 😮😁. You made my day , week and month. What did he have to eat ? What did you have ? Did he talk a lot ? If I come to your state can you set me up on a blind date with him ? NOTE ——🌟🌟🌟 the date will be only a meal then I‘m done. I‘ll even pay for my own if I get to sit with him. I‘ll buy his too. THANK YOU SO MUCH. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ 12mo
Kaye Oh and how did you get to see him ? Was it an author event or he was just eating at a place you went to eat ? 12mo
gradcat WOWZA! 12mo
JoScho @Kaye he came in the hotel restaurant where we were having breakfast. He started talking to a few other men and then they sat together. I am in Beaufort for the weekend and the Pat Conroy Literary Festival is here this weekend. I finished my breakfast (grits and a biscuit) and then went and sat in the lobby outside the restaurant to stalk him. I didn‘t want to interrupt his meal of course. I called him Mr. Bragg and he said please call me Rick. 12mo
JoScho @Kaye he was also sitting with actor Michael O‘Keefe who I complimented and he gave me a serious look and said “I‘m no Rick Bragg”. I know he had bacon and sweet tea but not sure what else. He was very nice. 12mo
JoScho @Kaye he did talk a lot. The actor said his gave his wife My Southern Journey because she was from New Orleans and she would be able to relate. Bragg said well even if the accents are different everyone should be able to relate. He also talked about his father and Faulkner. 12mo
Kaye So cool 😎. Gosh what a lucky day you had. I also think Pat Conroy was a wonderful writer. Prince of Tides was one of my all time favorite books. Are there lots of Southern authors down there ? That‘d be an interesting festival to attend. ❤️📚❤️ 12mo
GripLitGrl That's awesome!😎💖 12mo
JoScho @Kaye yes there are a bunch of authors here. We aren‘t going to any of the events but it was very cool to see them this morning. 12mo
CouronneDhiver What a cool gift! Well done 👍🏽 12mo

This is a book to make you cry, fill your heart, slap your knee laughing, & look around with new eyes at the bitter-sweetness & tragedy in life & see some dignity, tenderness, & even beauty. Bragg writes gorgeously & there were so many passages I had to stop and read out loud, but even more importantly, he writes with so much humility, respect, & love for his family, his people, & humanity at large, whether in NYC, Haiti, or Possum Trot, Alabama.

RaimeyGallant Nice review. 1y

I found this treasure at a local bookstore coffee shop today. One that is closing. Whose last weekend is today. I went in to have my last pimento grilled cheese sandwich. And to buy one last book. And I found this. Well loved first edition of a book by one of my favorite authors. It cost me the huge sum of $2.73. #GoodbyeEclipse #NotHappy #GoingToMissYou

MicheleinPhilly BITSY!!!!! Pickles has missed you!!! 😘 2y
KathyWheeler He was the narrator for the audiobook of his last book, My Southern Journey. He has such a natural storyteller's voice that he's damn near the perfect reader -- especially for his own books. 2y
LauraBeth @Reecaspieces poor, poor Bitsy has been a tad neglected lately 😔She says hi to your crew 🐶 2y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly Bitsy wants to know if Pickles has been on a ho stroll lately 😂 2y
LauraBeth @KathyWheeler I need to listen to his audiobooks - I'm not sure why I haven't done that yet! 2y
KathyWheeler @LauraBeth it took me a very long to start listening to audiobooks. I have to be either in a car, walking, or going to sleep to do it -- somewhere where my attention won't wander --or I'll miss half the book. 2y
MicheleinPhilly Every day. No lie the other night I was talking to someone at the dog park and then said, "Wait, where is my dog?" She was sitting on top of a picnic table giving some guy a tongue facial. 2y
ValerieAndBooks Love that book! He has two sequels to it, but IMO this is the best. 2y
LauraBeth @KathyWheeler it took me a while to come around to audiobooks too. My mind will totally drift off of the book 😬 2y
LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly well now you have to use the phrase "where's my dog" as code language ? 2y
LauraBeth @ValerieAndBooks I agree - this is the best! I've read the other two books and they just didn't pop for me like this one did. His love for his mother really shines throughout this book. 2y

This has to be listened to. Rick Bragg's story of growing up and becoming a Pulitzer winner has to be told in his smooth Southern voice.

I really enjoyed reading this. Maybe people outside the South read it and wonder if it's real, but it really is.

I'm coming back to add an edit - sometimes a book makes me think "I'd like to read more about ___." This book made me want to read more about so many different things.

Laura317 I'm listening to My Southern Journey by him now. 3y
Sace I want to read that @Laura317! Is the audio worth a listen? 3y

For #recommendsday I love this memoir. When I found myself as a southerner living in NYC during my 20s, I turned to it for comfort. One day while reading it, there was Rick Bragg. Like a true moron I started speaking gibberish. He smiled, talked to me at length and signed my book "from home"

Stephanie-Anne I love Rick Bragg! And this book makes me want to hug his mama ❤️ 3y

Rick Bragg writes like a poet--one whose gift found him in the hardscrabble country of the American South. I'm rereading this book as a possible summer read for my AP English students.

I was very fortunate to hear Rick Bragg speak last month at the university where I work. He was born to be a storyteller. As a Californian now living in the South, I can think of no better way to try to understand what it means to be Southern than to read this book. Amazing, heartbreaking, lovely.
