⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Memoir/meditation on his upbringing in the South and especially the lasting shadows of his dad abusing his mom and abandoning the family, and then his path into and through journalism to the New York Times and a Pulitzer. There was a chunk in the middle that was a bit of a slog, but I really enjoyed the last 1/3 or so, his experiences in journalism, and the ways he was pulled back toward home.

Blueberry I'm reading his book My Southern Journey: True Stories from the Heart of the South. It's a collection of feel-good essays from his life. I read an essay or two before bed if I've had a chaotic day. 3y
KathyWheeler I‘m listening to his Where I Come From. I love his voice. 3y

So heartfelt! What a beautiful tribute from a son to a beloved mother. My first Rick Bragg but definitely not my last. What should I read next @britt_brooke !!??! Audio narration is a MUST!!

fredthemoose I just got this from the library and am looking forward to it! 3y
KathyWheeler His stuff is great on audio too. He narrated the ones I listened to and he‘s a perfect narrator. 3y
britt_brooke I think the one I just read would make sense next as it focuses on his dad - and on Bragg‘s stepson. 3y

britt_brooke I‘m SO happy you loved this! He‘s one of my favorites. I can‘t believe I still haven‘t read all of his books (but, I‘m close)! 3y
Cinfhen I agree @KathyWheeler there is something in his voice that is so soothing and transportive / you can easily hear and feel his southern roots! Are you doing audio @fredthemoose ???? 3y
Cinfhen Thanks, Britt I‘ll follow your suggestions 💚💚💚 but I think I need a little break first / there was some heavy stuff 😔 3y

AmyG I am. Maybe our Chabad in NJ had one like that??? I never saw it as we went to our Temple. (edited) 3y

Another Fairhope, AL photo - this is from an amazing bayside restaurant called Sunset Pointe, this meal is aptly dubbed “Rick Bragg‘s ‘Ode to Grouper‘ Sandwich.” Here‘s the lovely article I believe it‘s named from: https://gardenandgun.com/feature/requiem-for-a-fish-sandwich/

Deblovestoread Love love love Rick Bragg! 3y
britt_brooke @Kdgordon88 Me, too! I had the immense pleasure of hearing him speak, then meeting him, a few years ago. No one writes about the southern experience like him. 💚 3y
Megabooks I love grouper!! 3y

BarbaraBB As a non American I don‘t know Rick Bragg but I did eat grouper once when visiting New Orleans. It was in a restaurant called Nola by chef Emeril Lagasse. I left that restaurant buying his cookbook. Loved it ❤️ (edited) 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks It‘s so good, but sometimes hard to find! (edited) 3y
britt_brooke @BarbaraBB New Orleans is so calling to me right now. 😩 This little Alabama town had that vibe. Even had a little French Quarter! Def looking for that Emeril cookbook - thanks! (edited) 3y
Megabooks Yes, unfortunately it was overfished a lot in the 90s and earlier and is still rebounding. I got my taste for it on trips back then, but even with the environmental issues, I eat it when I‘m in Florida, which often anymore. I just looked and they have sustainable fishing in place now, which is good! 3y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Yep, in Bragg‘s article he talks about how every type of grouper has been on protected lists at some point. I‘m happy it‘s under control now! 3y

How beautiful is this bookshop?! Page and Palette is an indie store in Fairhope, AL - a town that has connections to several authors including one of my faves: Rick Bragg! Fannie Flagg and others have also called this beautiful town “home.” Love the New Orleans vibe! Hubby and I immediately added it to our list of places we‘d like to live. 🤩

"You're ok, little man," she would tell me. "You just been travelin'."

What a fantastic book. I don't go in for memoirs much. Too often, the ones I've read fall into one of two categories- either distinguished people near the end of their lives cataloging their achievements with the dull efficiency of an accountant filling out a ledger, or those too young to have even lived life, much less properly reflect upon it. Though only 38 at the time ?

The_Penniless_Author ...this book was published, Bragg had already done more living than most of us will in a lifetime. But that isn't why this book is so wonderful. I don't know how many people can be truly insightful about their own lives, can strip away all sentimentality and lay bare the foundation of where they come from and who they are. I only know that when it happens, the result is something profound. 3y

That is where a big part of the Old South is, on coffee tables in Greenwich Village."

I learned that it is okay to pull a knife while fighting drunk as long as you are cautious not to cut off your own head."

Without Litsy I never would have picked up this book and would have missed out on a memoir that is full to bursting with love for his mother. Bragg writes about the poverty of his upbringing and his abusive father but he also writes of the beauty of growing up in the south and of his strong, kind family I was less enthralled with his accounting of his journalism career but I am glad I read this for #parentandchildmemoir #booked2020

Suet624 I read this a really long time ago, but I remember feeling as though he balanced the good and the bad quite nicely. I'm glad you enjoyed it. 4y

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m having difficulty finding a book for the prompt. 4y
alisiakae Great review! @erzascarletbookgasm here is a GR list that might help, filled with fiction books that would fit that prompt. I definitely recommend On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous! https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/parent-child-relationship 4y
erzascarletbookgasm @4thhouseontheleft Thank you! 😘 If that‘s a memoir, then it‘s perfect! I‘ve been wanting to read it. 4y
alisiakae @erzascarletbookgasm it‘s not a memoir, but it is rooted in his life story: “As he began writing On Earth, Vuong says he tried to stick to the facts of his life. But just a few paragraphs in, he found himself embellishing details to push the story forward, as he did with his poems. “I wanted to invoke or invite an autobiographical reading, but refuse it ultimately,” Vuong says. “The book would be founded on truth, but realized by the imagination.” 4y
erzascarletbookgasm @4thhouseontheleft I‘ll shortlist it for the prompt. 👍 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The first time I read this many years ago, it dragged and really lost my interest. Indeed, it *is* slow-moving, but since having the immense pleasure of listening to Bragg speak last year, I realized that that‘s just his tempo. It‘s that charming, slow, southern drawl. Damned nearly a character itself. This is about his early life, family, and incredible journalism career. Loved it!

ljuliel Yes I have. I have the book and the audio. His books in audio are fantastic since you get to listen to his accent . I only wish all his audiobooks were unabridged. Some of them are only available in the shortened version. I don‘t ever buy them. I like to hear the whole book. 😊 4y
Megabooks @britt_brooke Thanks! I am doing well! 😊 4y

⏳What is your most special family heirloom? ⏳I got to go through old photos with my grandma, yesterday. I love getting to know family history and the stories they bring. I don‘t know a lot of my family history, but what I can learn I cherish it. My favorite heirloom is my great grandma‘s cookbook. It is filled with old family recipes of dishes I‘ve never heard of and the most cherished part is the hand writing of all the women who wrote them.

Kaye Oh and how did you get to see him ? Was it an author event or he was just eating at a place you went to eat ? 5y
gradcat WOWZA! 5y
JoScho @Kaye he came in the hotel restaurant where we were having breakfast. He started talking to a few other men and then they sat together. I am in Beaufort for the weekend and the Pat Conroy Literary Festival is here this weekend. I finished my breakfast (grits and a biscuit) and then went and sat in the lobby outside the restaurant to stalk him. I didn‘t want to interrupt his meal of course. I called him Mr. Bragg and he said please call me Rick. 5y
JoScho @Kaye he was also sitting with actor Michael O‘Keefe who I complimented and he gave me a serious look and said “I‘m no Rick Bragg”. I know he had bacon and sweet tea but not sure what else. He was very nice. 5y
JoScho @Kaye he did talk a lot. The actor said his gave his wife My Southern Journey because she was from New Orleans and she would be able to relate. Bragg said well even if the accents are different everyone should be able to relate. He also talked about his father and Faulkner. 5y
Kaye So cool 😎. Gosh what a lucky day you had. I also think Pat Conroy was a wonderful writer. Prince of Tides was one of my all time favorite books. Are there lots of Southern authors down there ? That‘d be an interesting festival to attend. ❤️📚❤️ 5y

This is a book to make you cry, fill your heart, slap your knee laughing, & look around with new eyes at the bitter-sweetness & tragedy in life & see some dignity, tenderness, & even beauty. Bragg writes gorgeously & there were so many passages I had to stop and read out loud, but even more importantly, he writes with so much humility, respect, & love for his family, his people, & humanity at large, whether in NYC, Haiti, or Possum Trot, Alabama.

I was very fortunate to hear Rick Bragg speak last month at the university where I work. He was born to be a storyteller. As a Californian now living in the South, I can think of no better way to try to understand what it means to be Southern than to read this book. Amazing, heartbreaking, lovely.
