Our Town (Revised)
Our Town (Revised) | Thornton Wilder
39 posts | 104 read | 18 to read
Winner! 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama In an important publishing event, Samuel French, in cooperation with the Thornton Wilder estate is pleased to release the playwright's definitive version of "Our Town." This edition of the play differs only slightly from previous acting editions, yet it presents "Our Town" as Thornton Wilder wished it to be performed. Described by Edward Albee as ..".the greatest American play ever written," the story follows the small town of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually-in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre-die. Thornton Wilder's final word on how he wanted his play performed is an invaluable addition to the American stage and to the libraries of theatre lovers internationally.

AmyG Our Town! You should read Tom Lake by Ann Patchet….she writes of a woman‘s first love while playing Emily in summer stock theater at Tom Lake. Excellent. 2w

The last time I read this was in AP English back in 1983. 😳 After reading TOM LAKE, I had to revisit it, and I'm so glad I did. I remember finding it pointless at the tender and stupid age of 17. What the hell was wrong with me? Such a poignant reminder to carpe diem--especially the most mundane moments of our lives because going about our daily business is the life of living and we must cherish every single second. Thanks, TW, for the reminder.

TheBookHippie SAME GIRL SAME and then I saw the play too -the next year in 1984 🙃 guess I should reread it and the book you mentioned I‘ve been avoiding it . 🤣🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 2w
sarahbarnes This is such a good reminder that I should read this again, too. So many books I didn‘t appreciate in my youth. 2w
TheLudicReader So much love for Our Town and an appreciation of the play enhances Tom Lake, for sure. 2w

dabbe @TheBookHippie Our high school performed it, too! Okay, we need to meet somewhere in the middle of our country (wouldn't THAT be interesting?) and see the play by a small, hometown school. 🤩 2w
dabbe @sarahbarnes I'm feeling that more and more. Books I hated in high school (I'm talking to you, MADAME BOVARY), I just loved reading as an adult. Did I actually acquire a little wisdom along the way? 🤔 Nah, probably not. I was a naive and obnoxious high school student. 😂 2w
dabbe @TheLudicReader I hoped you would write (I'm working on your next letter, btw). It's because of you I got off my ass to read TOM LAKE. You inspire me, m'dear. 💚💙💚 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I haven't read or seen it, I feel like I need to after Tom Lake! Good to know others feel the same 2w
TheBookHippie @dabbe yes. Because you‘d be a better date than the one I had. Rest his soul. 🤣🤣🤣🤣😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
KAO I liked parts of this when I read it for first the first time when I was in high school, but time and experience happened—and by now I have read it a handful of times and love even the minutiae of this play. I think of it often in moments of deep appreciation of “small things.” 2w
dabbe @TheBookHippie Should I cry or laugh? How about both? 😂😢🤩 2w
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures It's a fairly quick read, too! 🤩 2w
dabbe @KAO I will, too. How I missed that in high school, I have no idea why. Sometimes great literature is wasted on the young. 🤩😍😃 2w
TheBookHippie @dabbe I laugh. But I am not really that nice about boys who thought they could get in my pants..........LMAOROF. 2w
dabbe @TheBookHippie 😂😂😂 2w
Amiable Since I just picked up “Tom Lake” at the library, I took your advice and read “Our Town” as a refresher. (It‘s been so long, I don‘t think I could have intelligently discussed the plot.) It left me in tears. Holy cow, that hits differently in your 50s 😳 Thanks for the push to experience all the feels. 2w
dabbe @Amiable I cried, too! Act 3 just about did me in. I can't wait to read what you think of TOM LAKE. 💚💙💚 2w

Aww, I loved it! This was my first time reading it and I kept asking myself whyyyyyy did I not teach this way back when I was teaching high school English?! 😩 #regrets One of the many Bookstagram accounts said to read this play before diving into Tom Lake, so I did and it was a great suggestion ❤️

I absolutely love this play, but seeing it performed again this summer was an emotional experience. It was the 25th anniversary of my Mom's death and she performed as the lead in high school. The play is a celebration of life, both its simple routines and its big moments. Seeing it and rereading it was incredibly moving. I can't imagine experiencing this play and not appreciating the beauty of life a bit more when you are done.

Still one of my favorite reads! Definitely going to make this something I revisit yearly. I love how Wilder pushes boundaries and while the theme of the play isn‘t revolutionary, the presentation is. It‘s a quick read that could really be done in a couple hours.

One of my favorites reads from high school… found this copy in a little library outside the local school. So happy I picked it up and it‘s fun to see what notes the different kids have left in the margins. Also super interested to see how I‘ll feel about the story now that I‘m in “act 2” compared to when I first read it!

Eggs I read it every few years to get perspective… 9mo
ravenlee When I took Intro to Drama in college, we had to pick a play and write an essay. Prof said we could write on anything we wanted EXCEPT OUR TOWN NOBODY EVER WRITES A SUCCESSFUL ESSAY ON OUR TOWN DON‘T EVEN TRY PICK SOMETHING ELSE! 9mo

CollapsingLibrary @ravenlee I believe it! I was personally trying to think how I would even begin approaching a paper over this play and there‘s just so much packed into 100 pages! 9mo
ravenlee I‘d guess lots of young students had read it in high school and thought it would be easier than reading/writing on something new. I don‘t blame the prof for not wanting to go through that repeatedly! 9mo

#OnThisDay in 1938, Our Town debuted on Broadway. It would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award later that year. This was the second of Thornton Wilder's three Pulitzers (two for drama, one for literature. Can you name them?), and remains his most popular work. Especially with high school theatre departments and community theatres (three cheers for cheap staging!) #HistoryGetsLIT

This play is told in three acts appropriately titled ‘daily life‘, ‘love and marriage‘, and ‘death and eternity‘. It depicts a small town on the border of Massachusetts between 1903-1913 and what living there is like for its citizens. Though many actions are dated, the themes are immortal. This play shows the importance of appreciating the small things, companionship, and not taking life for granted. A wonderful light read, rich with human nature

I spent this afternoon doing my weekly food prep and listening to the classic play, Our Town. I enjoyed reading it as a kid, but as an adult, it felt like a nostalgic remembrance of a time that never really was. Set in the Jim Crow era and pre-19th Amendment, I have a hard time believing things were that good. Still, if you ignore everything else, it‘s a sweet love story.

And tonight‘s dinner? Drunken cod and clams 😋

Tonight we had final dress for this show. I had never seen it before and the cast blew me away. There are two younger cast members who were brilliant and my friend was an amazing stage manager. The cast stays on the upper level watching the action that takes place in the rest of the theatre. I am so excited for people to see this beautiful show.

TheAnitaAlvarez That looks like an interesting staging for this play 6y
TsundokuAleax @TheAnitaAlvarez It is kinda brilliant. The cast stays on the upper level for the whole show. They make all the sound effects and get dressed before coming down to the floor. The watch the show and the audience. I cannot wait to watch it again. Perks of being house manager. 6y

I've had such a stressful day at work, my feet are sore, and my stomach hurts 😫 So I am in definite need of some quality reading time. I've been slacking on my reading lately but moving to a new place is incredibly stressful and so is working 12 hour shifts for three days in a row (which I do every weekend, it's my regular shift) I promise I'm trying to make time for Litsy, as I do love it so much!
