Ethiopia | Philip Briggs, Kim Wildman

Of all the African nations, Ethiopia is most prone to misconceptions. The 1985 famine and the cracked barren earth of the Danakil Depression are not images quickly forgotten. This fully updated guide refocuses the lens to reveal an ancient country that continues to surpass all expectations: from the ancient Judaic cultures of the fertile highlands to the colourful animist people of the South Omo Valley, from the Afro-pine moorland of the Bale Mountains National Park to the thundering Blue Nile Falls. Taking you far off the beaten track, the author presents more of this expansive beautiful land, believed to be the cradle of humankind.Bradt's Ethiopia provides the most comprehensive coverage of any English-language guidebook on the market. Not only does it include towns and villages well off the beaten track, but it goes into greater depth than its competitors, with more detail on the history, culture and sights, and more opinionated and entertaining reviews of hotels and restaurants. In addition, it features detailed information on wildlife, national parks and trekking routes found in no other book.

Butterfinger @mdm139 I thought about it too when I saw there were no posts. It's hard to choose. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Thank you so much for putting these together!! They really do help me get some ideas for what I want to read!! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Thanks for the research starting point. I did a preliminary search on Libby & Hoopla and this one came up. I'll have to see if any of these others are available and start deciding. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Chef Marcus Samuelsson is Ethiopian-Swedish, so not straight up Ethiopian cooking, but might be worth checking out. Maybe his notoriety will persuade my guy to cook a meal for me. 3y
Butterfinger @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I love Marcus Samuelsson. You and @Laughterhp have me interested in The Shadow King. 3y
Cinfhen Thanks for all the suggestions/ there are a few that caught my eye 3y
Catsandbooks Thank you!! Love this group!! 🥰 3y
Chrissyreadit @Catsandbooks 😘😘😘thank you! 3y
OutAndAbout It's interesting that there are so many more nonfiction books than fiction for this one. I wanted to read Remote People, but couldn't find copies anywhere. So I'm going with... 3y
howjessicareads Ahhhhh I‘m slacking at this challenge. 😅😅 3y

alisiakae I‘m going to share more about this next month, but one of my former Ethiopian asylum seeker clients went to the Paralympics in 2008. He is an incredible person who overcame so many tragedies and struggles, and I‘m so proud to still call him a friend: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2008-09-12/abebe-fekadu-proud-to-lift-for-australia-... 3y
Butterfinger @4thhouseontheleft what a story!!! That article grips you from the first sentence. You should help him write his memoir. 3y
Laughterhp Will this one work? It‘ll probably be the one I pick. 3y
Butterfinger @Laughterhp that one looks really good. I'm glad you found it. That one may be the one I choose. An homage to women. 3y

Native Ethiopian authors and poets. A few are Ethiopian-Americans. I could not find anything to represent the LGBTQ+ community. If you find something, please share. I want to represent everyone.

I learned a great amount just searching for books. Remember, you don't have to read one from this list. Please let us know what you find and plan to read. I'm really adding to my tbr list. This post focuses on children lit. Titles are in comments.

A friend wanted to meet up for a (distanced) lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant we both like that has just reopened, and at first I said no, I'm doing a readathon, and then I realized that supporting a Black-owned business > sitting at home and reading, and that I have time for both today. PLUS LOOK AT THAT!!! #juneteenthreadathon
