Another great addition to this series. On the surface it‘s a detective series, but the author is absolutely brilliant at weaving in other themes and politically important issues. In this one the continuing Syrian civil war. My heart breaks for all those refugees, unwanted anywhere. 💔

A missing persons crime novel with well researched information on the horrors of being a refugee. My favorite book of the series.

This was another great installment in a mystery series featuring two Canadian detectives. The storyline always includes some human rights angle. In this one, a Canadian woman is missing from a camp for Syrian refugees in Greece, and they go to find out what caused her to #disappear. #ReallyRandomFebruary

When a Canadian NGO worker goes missing, suspected of murder, from a refugee camp on Lesvos, Community Policing detectives Esa Khattak and Rachel Getty are sent to investigate, and avert a diplomatic incident.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC - I‘d been looking forward to reading these books, and will be going back to read the others in the series. 👇

rockpools The murder mystery is really secondary to the plight of the refugees - we learn of the horrors they were facing in Syria, and the organised crime taking advantage of the most vulnerable as they try to flee. Khan is a former human rights lawyer, and her research cuts through the story without ever feeling forced. 5y
rockpools Where the book falls down for me is in the personal relationships between the Canadian characters, which I didn‘t always believe, either logistically or emotionally, and found a little off-putting. I have come in at the 4th in the series, which no doubt contributed to the problem. 5y
TrishB I‘ve just finished number 2 and am really enjoying the series!! I couldn‘t start at number 4 😱 5y
rockpools @TrishB 🤣🤣🤣 Yes but I‘m so slow, I‘d never get anywhere if I started at the beginning! The story was fine as a standalone, but I do wonder if I‘d have found the relationships less eye-roll-y if I‘d started at number 1. Were any eyes rolled during books 1&2 for you? 5y
TrishB I think the Esa/Rachel relationship may be worthy of the occasional eye roll! 5y

Still working my way (very slowly) through this ARC. So far it‘s taken us #AllAroundTheWorld from Canada, to Greece, Turkey, France & the Netherlands in the search for Audrey, a missing Canadian charity worker based on the Greek islands. Meanwhile Syrian refugee Ali is still looking for his ‘baby‘, girlfriend Israa, who was separated from him in the chaos of the journey to Greece.

#redroseseptember

arlenefinnigan This sounds excellent, and heartbreaking. 5y
rockpools @arlenefinnigan The storyline‘s excellent, and the details just keep kicking you. I think the author has a background in human rights/immigration law. But the relationships... 🙄! Not sure if I‘d be more convinced if I‘d started with book 1 in the series... 5y
Cinfhen Oh, this is part of a series???? It sounds really good 5y
rockpools @Cinfhen Yes, I think I‘ll read the others one day. In order! (Beware US/UK title changes though.) Think this is the first : 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve actually heard REALLY WONDERFUL things about this series 😊 5y

My next #NetGalley read, probably called A Dangerous Crossing in some/the rest of the world.

Dear publishers,
Now that word-of-mouth is international, do title changes really still make sense?

Dear @Litsy
Thank you for your trick of merging international titles. It makes SUCH a difference (I can be annoyed rather than out-of-pocket now!) - of all the improvements you‘ve made over the last year, this one gets 🎉🎉🎉 every time I hit it.

Centique Yes it‘s so helpful when Litsy merges them! 5y

#Audiobook performed by Peter Ganim is 4th in an excellent series with Muslim #Canadian police detective Esa Khattak, and which always has a focus on contemporary politics. This time, a double murder plus a missing woman working for a Canadian NGO helping refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos. Organized crime, human trafficking, and xenophobia in a suspenseful thriller with a global backdrop.

I always recommend this great series. The cases focus on a real life crisis. In this one, it is the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Syria. The Canadian detectives travel to Greece to investigate the disappearance of an NGO volunteer, to whom they are both connected, at a refugee camp. The mystery is almost secondary to dangers faced by the refugees. I always learn from this author.

DGRachel Yes, yes, yes! 😍 So much love for this series and author! 7y
MallenNC @DGRachel I love it, though I always feel like I need to warn people that they cases are hard to read about because of the real life element. But so worth it. 7y
DGRachel Agreed. Not easy reads, but they always make me want to be a better human being and find some way to help. 7y
MallenNC @DGRachel They definitely make things we hear in the news or read about feel real also. She's so great. I can't wait for the next one! 7y

A gripping and difficult read. Once again, Khan weaves policing in with social and political commentary. This time, Detectives Khattak and Getty go to Greece to search for a missing friend, who worked for an NGO, helping refugees from Syria. Both see first hand, the difficulties in providing services for the refugees as well as the refugees‘ own suffering. Both Rachel and Esa see the best and worst of humanity during this case.

ALL THE STARS! This is not an easy read. Khan places her detectives in the middle of a deeply disturbing humanitarian crisis. The novel is a complex, multilayered mystery, but even more important than the mystery of what happened to Audrey Clare, is the plight of the Syrian people. I don‘t know how someone can read this and not be spurred to anger and action. Assad and his regime are pure evil.

TrishB After watching the news today, my heart is breaking again for those children and people 💔 7y
DGRachel @TrishB I cried off and on for 3 hours last night and chatted with the author on Twitter about how to help. It‘s devastating and I‘m so appalled by the veto power that Russia has with the UN. That any one country should be able to completely prevent action is unconscionable. 7y
