pickThis is genius. It was used during WWII as propaganda. Which is amazing since it was accepted and translated and distributed all over occupied Europe despite being largely panned as unrealistic in the US.

pickThis is another great Steinbeck short story. When a town is occupied by a larger and stronger force, the true heroes rise up. I enjoyed the brisk pace and the characters. Mayor Orden and the Doctor and Molly are very likable. I even liked Colonel Lanser.
I found this awesome early edition through Amazon. The back dust jacket cover has an appeal to send your copy to the USO!

pickA co-worker mentioned this Steinback novella to me a few weeks back and I was intrigued. It reads like a play (so very quickly). I worked my way thru East of Eden in high school, but it‘s nice to be reminded that Steinbeck can be fun! This pro-democracy WWII propaganda is essential reading (especially in today‘s current political climate). Democracy is so precious!!

No wonder mere possession of this book in Nazi occupied Italy was punishable by death. pickThis is a Steinbeck WWII short novel in which an unnamed invading force (Nazis) occupies a small mining town in an unnamed country (Netherlands). As the occupying army starts tightening the noose and establishing a totalitarian regime over the peaceful, hard-working citizens the plot turns dark and events go from being uneasy to ugly and sad. The winter setting adds to the cold and dark tone. A really good but gloomy tale.
pickThis book has #moon and is one of my all-time favorites! It's a very short little book about the invasion of a small town and how everyone handles the aftermath--written with a somewhat absurdist tone. It's very good. #uncannyoctober #greatfirstlines

It took 6 days but I finally finished and have one book done for August. Wow I forgot how little I read during the school year.

Well this is a picture of my latest book haul there are a couple of books I am going to start with The Moon is Down and The Complete Works of O'Henry. Oh and @Wife and @AdaChivers awesome to have you as my pen pals. 😁
Something about his writing always strikes me like it's a form that no longer exists. It was classical, straight forward, and pulled the reader in with ease. So far, this one is just as great as his others and also very different.

Embarrassing confession story: I went to Michigan this week to visit family, including some cousins who came in from both coasts. We were at dinner and one cousin mentions that he just read The Moon Is Down. I pipe up, "Is that a children's book?" Because he does have two very young kids. "No, it's John Steinbeck." "Oh," I reply, as I inconspicuously try to slide under the table. ?
