Everything Is Teeth
Everything Is Teeth | Evie Wyld
58 posts | 71 read | 142 to read
When she was a little girl, passing her summers in the heat of coastal Australia, Evie Wyld was captivated by sharks by their innate ruthlessness, stealth, and immeasurable power and they have never released their hold on her imagination. From the award-winning author of "All the Birds, Singing, "here is a deeply moving graphic memoir about family, love, loss, and the irresistible forces that, like sharks, course through life unseen, ready to emerge at any moment. "Black-and-white illustrations throughout.""

While looking for another book by her on the library shelf , I found this graphic novel. As a child she had an interest/fear of sharks. A fun read on a wet Saturday afternoon. My partner also read it as she won‘t go into the ocean because of her fear.

Centique Oh that‘s so sad for your partner. I do know that feeling. I had that fear for a while as a kid and had to read a bit about sharks to help me believe I‘m unlikely to meet one in the water around here - and it‘s unlikely to be interested in me if I do. But it did keep me out of the water for a couple years. Are there more sharks in your area? 2y
Jeg @Centique here at times it seems we have more sharks. The West Aussie coast has had increased number of attacks in recent years. But certainly not enough to keep me out of the water! 2y

Wonderful illustration. I can appreciate the significance of sharks on her life, but I was left wanting to know more about her and her family.

I thought I would take a bit of a break from action heavy comics after last week's Saga binge.

This is a lovely graphic memoir, quiet and deceptively straight forward. The art is excellent, I love the cartoon style of her childhood juxtaposed with the terrifying realism of the shark. I find myself thinking back to the story again and again after reading. Definitely worth a re-read before it goes back to the library.

Fascinated and haunted by sharks as a child, Wyld looks back on her fears and how they shaped her coming-to-terms with mortality as an adult. A moving, charming and subtle memoir in graphic format. Beautiful art by Joe Sumner combines high contrast inked cartoony images with realistic, delicate pencil work.

When I was little I once stepped on a baby shark on the pier. My uncle spent many years recounting this story. Now I'm both terrified and fascinated by them. Evie Wyld's graphic memoir about sharks in her childhood was so good and entertaining. None of her sharks wear cool sunglasses though.

I have loved sharks since Dad and I established a tradition of watching Shark Week together when I was about 10. So, I was probably destined to really enjoy this part-memoir, part-shark ode. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wyld's narration is stark and threatening, full of holes for the reader's own mind to fill, like shadows under water. Its panels are bare, empty, near-colorless as it recounts Evie's childhood obsession with sharks--a danger she can know in a way she can't with her family's problems--and they teach her to hope, to survive. Her idol, shark attack survivor Rodney Fox, fought and lived. Evie can too, as long as she doesn't give up.

Quiet graphic memoir about the cycles of life, family, apex predators, and a girl's fascination with sharks. Great illustrations - the shark attack pictures were graphic, and my youngest pointed out all the different species of sharks drawn throughout the book.

Very simply illustrated but oh so striking. It's a simple story about a girl's lifelong obsession with sharks and things that lurk out of sight. I wish it was more indepth but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

This was an awesome graphic memoir. I have an obsession with sharks and could relate to many of the things that she talks about. Shark week is probably my favorite thing to watch in the summer. She does an incredible job telling her story of growing up in Australia and the artwork is stunning.

I wondered why Evie Wyld chose the comic form for her memoir, but the second I opened this and saw Joe Sumner's incredible art, I knew exactly why. This tale of Wyld's childhood obsession with sharks is gorgeous and visceral.
