Everything's Trash, But It's Okay
Everything's Trash, But It's Okay | Phoebe Robinson
From New York Times bestselling author and star of 2 Dope Queens, Phoebe Robinson, comes a new, hilarious, and timely essay collection on gender, race, dating, and a world that seems to always be a self-starting Dumpster fire. Wouldn't it be great if life came with an instruction manual? Of course, but like access to Michael B. Jordan's house, none of us are getting any. Thankfully, Phoebe Robinson is ready to share everything she's experienced in hopes that if you can laugh at her topsy-turvy life, you can laugh at your own. Written in her trademark unfiltered and singularly witty style, Robinson's latest essay collection is a call to arms. She tackles a wide range of topics, such as giving feminism a tough love talk in hopes it can become more intersectional; telling society's beauty standards to kick rocks; and demanding that toxic masculinity close its mouth and legs (enough with the manspreading already!), and get out of the way so true progress can happen. Robinson also gets personal, exploring debt she has hidden from her parents, how dating is mainly a warmed-over bowl of hot mess, and maybe most importantly, meeting Bono not once, but twice. She's struggled with being a woman with a political mind and a woman with an ever-changing jean size. She knows about trash not only because she sees it every day, but also because she's seen about one hundred thousand hours of reality TV and zero hours of Schindler's List. Everything's Trash, But It's Okay is a candid perspective for a generation that has had the rug pulled out from under it too many times to count, as well as an intimate conversation with a new best friend.

OMG this is so exciting!!
I love Phoebe Robinson's books. Listening to them on the train and getting looks because I was laughing so hard will always stick in my memory. I am excited to watch her obsession with Bono on the small screen!!
In Freeform (?) And Hulu starting mid July

LibrarianRyan as in U2 Bono? Hummmm. Might need to check this out. 2y
ChaoticMissAdventures @LibrarianRyan YES! She is honestly hilarious and I was not expecting an entire chapter (plus remarks later in this book and in her next book) about U2s Bono 😂 2y

Phoebe Robinson‘s second (out of three, so far) book of essays is my least favorite, but it‘s still a good read. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#everythings-trash-but-its-okay

She is so exuberant, talks so fast, and with texting slang… but about serious subjects (mostly). Like Lorelai Gilmore fast and smart and sprinkled heavily with pop culture references, you have to pay attention to this one on audiobook or you will get lost….But I loved it, just the fun kicking it, half crazy “discus” about everything that is trash at the moment including ourselves. Plus the added addendum to the audiobook was delightful.

I can only handle Phoebe‘s relentless enthusiasm sometimes, so I DNFed this back when it came out, but I‘m glad I came back. She‘s definitely funny. I loved the addendum where she and her boyfriend talked about meeting at a U2 concert. (And I love her being under 40 and stanning for Bono! ⬆️) Anyway, cute fun that I enjoyed while watching March Madness on mute. (This is why I‘m going through so many #audiobooks right now.) #pop21 #advanced

BarbaraBB I don‘t know Phoebe but she seems close with Bono and that‘s cool 😎 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yeah, her Bono stories were so cute. He seems like such a nice guy. 👍🏻 4y
MicheleinPhilly That‘s so funny. I‘ve been reading this in snatches over the last week or so. I love Phoebe‘s sense of humor but this time it sort of grated on me. I‘ve been insanely busy with work so reading her after a long day was just irritating me. I should have just set it aside for a day off or something. 4y

Cinfhen Oh wow!! Her & Bono look SUPER CHUMMY 4y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly yes! She can be really grating if you‘re not in the mood. As cool as she seems, it can just be OVERWHELMING! I split it between yesterday and today, and it finally worked for me. You can always stick a bookmark in and come back since it‘s essays. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes! She‘s been such a big U2 fan for years that she was shocked when Bono became a fan of her first book/podcast. It must be incredibly fun to have an idol become a fan. 4y
MicheleinPhilly I finished it but it was just a so-so for me. 4y

Got up and got my workout out of the way this morning. It was biceps, shoulders, & core day with some spin on the back end for cardio! I also got about an hour of my audiobook listened to. (This book seems appropriate right now...) This met my goal of 5/5 workouts this week! Now for some school work & hopefully some fun reading later today. Have a great Saturday everyone! #BFC21 #anywayyoureadathon

I‘m slowly learning to not check the news frequently (only allowing myself twice daily (sometimes I fail), hoping to hone that down to once eventually) and am relearning to enjoy working from home (last year I had to work from home about 2 months while my agency ‘refreshed‘ the building). I only seem to have bandwidth for celebrity memoirs/essays these days... so #audioworking ftw!

How‘s everyone else holding up?

MaleficentBookDragon I work in local TV news in New York State so it is hard to avoid. I don't look at ANYTHING once I leave for the night. 5y

BookishMe Yes, I too am stopping myself from learning the latest numbers and how many still feel helpless elsewhere. I can only focus on being responsible and getting through each day, pulling myself together. 5y
BarbaraBB I‘m a bit at loss how to handle this situation. Wishing you well 💚🍀 5y

This book was a bit disappointing. I found the super long, unnecessary, overly-explained #hashtags to be repetitive and annoying. And some of it was obvious filler. But I'm giving it a pick because the last few chapters about money issues, living alone and being single and happy were refreshingly relatable. And the audio edition had a little interview with her and her new boyfriend that was kinda cute. I still want to read her first book 🤔

Megabooks I thought her first book was better!! I hope you enjoy it! 5y
Emilymdxn I didn‘t know she‘d written another book! Looks like I shouldn‘t expect it to be as good as You Can‘t Touch My Hair but I‘ll probably give it a go with my expectations in check. I love listening to her voice and how she reads them 5y

#libraryhaul !! I didn‘t read Phoebe‘s first book but I decided to give her second one a shot. I looked up every single book I got on here, and most of them had mixed reviews. I know I can read Strange Library in one sitting. The Brom one is supposed to be really good. I read on here yesterday that Chelsea Handler is turning Gross Anatomy into a tv show! I wanted to give Evelyn Lozada a chance. She‘s been through so much. The others look great too

This book is okay. A little *too* much j/k #hashtagthisisalonghashtag lolyoudumfuk.com stream of consciousness blathering but I love her honesty (especially about money, I realized while reading this that everyone is very tight lipped about money but will overshare their sexcapades at the drop of a hat).

Phoebe Robinson is definitely funny and insightful and I‘d love to hang out with her as a person but some of these essays just didn‘t quite hit the mark for me. A few went on too long, and her writing style with the abbreviations and hashtags was a bit wearing over a whole book rather than in a long Instagram caption (her one about thirsting after that tennis player had me 😂)

Megabooks Her first book was so much better! 5y

I waffled on this 1. I went with pick b/c I did find her funny, insightful, & enjoyed her stories. My hurdle was how she said it. There‘s nothing bad/wrong with how she says things-I just had a hard time connecting with her language b/c it‘s so diff from mine & what I‘m used to. I‘m a middle age white woman, so that‘s expected & 100% fine. Ultimately I enjoyed what she had to say so much I stuck around-that shows real strength to her & her stories

Robinson has hits and misses. I like her topics, and she makes good points, but her style and humor sometimes don‘t work for me. I‘d still say she‘s worth a read, but she‘s also not a must read for me.

Megabooks I enjoyed her first book more. I bailed on this one. 6y
SW-T @Megabooks This one felt rushed and a bit disorganized. I almost bailed, but it was a quick read and my other books weren‘t holding my interest much. 6y
Megabooks @SW-T I would definitely agree about rushed and disorganized! The tone she used in the audiobook was overly peppy and immature, which drove me nuts! 6y

3.5 stars. Definitely entertaining, particularly on audio, and thought-provoking at times, but it was a bit too much with the shortening of every phrase (sosh meeds for social media, for example) and celebrity gushing. I think she did a better job balancing that in her first book. That being said, there were parts where I laughed out loud, and she has some good points about social issues if you can get past her own unique “abbrevs” for everything.

Saw that this was nominated for a 2019 Audie so I used an Audible credit to buy it. WHAT AM I LISTENING TO?

The hashtags. The “abreevs.” I think I might return it. Mistake? Let me know. Or, as she‘d say, “Lmk. Tbh, idk. Wtf?”

sammisho Her first book bothered me for the same reasons. But I love her HBO show Two Dope Queens, so I was going to give this a shot. Maybe not. 6y

Phoebe Robinson was new to me before this #audiobook ...but now I know she loves U2, is a feminist and a comedienne, and loves abbreviations! She hosts a podcast and has a tv show on Netflix also. This collection of essays was funny, with bits of societal and moral tidbits in some of the more serious chapters. She almost always keeps it lighthearted. Of course she narrates and to hear her laugh throughout is endearing. 😄🔊 #nonfiction

Almost gave up on this #audiobook but glad I stuck with it. Robinson adds a few extra bits as she reads, and my favorite part is her laughing at herself 💘 my early struggle was all the spoken hashtags and abbreviations which clutter her witty and insightful points. I think they'd read more smoothly in print. While I didn't love this as much as You Can't Touch My Hair, she still delivers great #essays, & I'll seek out her future books.#mommyreads

I primarily read this via audiobook. I enjoyed the ad-libs the author added. I wholeheartedly enjoyed Phoebe's essays but I felt it fell a little short compared to her first book. I had an easier time relating to her first book than this one. With listening to Everything Is Trash, But it's Okay, I had some good laughs. I would still recommend.

I REALLY wanted to like this book. I just...couldn‘t. Compared to YCTMH this book just felt like a hastily-written money grab. Most of Phoebe‘s funny lines are derailed by jokey fake hashtags and meandering, tired cultural references. I‘ve never been so frustrated with a book over a single long-winded sentence...just finish your damn thought! I‘m begging you! There is so much potential in this book but it never coalesced for me.

With the intimacy and vulnerability of a best friend, Robinson encourages us to laugh at her mishaps while reflecting on our own. The collection of essays is humor and honestly blended in harmony. From the love-hate relationship with feminism, money management, interracial dating and phone calls with Oprah and meeting Bono twice, there's a story for everyone to love along with her welcoming storytelling.
