Art of the Wasted Day
Art of the Wasted Day | Patricia Hampl
42 posts | 13 read | 27 to read
A spirited inquiry into the lost value of leisure and daydream The Art of the Wasted Day is a picaresque travelogue of leisure written from a lifelong enchantment with solitude. Patricia Hampl visits the homes of historic exemplars of ease who made repose a goal, even an art form. She begins with two celebrated eighteenth-century Irish ladies who ran off to live a life of "retirement" in rural Wales. Her search then leads to Moravia to consider the monk-geneticist, Gregor Mendel, and finally to Bordeaux for Michel Montaigne--the hero of this book--who retreated from court life to sit in his chateau tower and write about whatever passed through his mind, thus inventing the personal essay. Hampl's own life winds through these pilgrimages, from childhood days lazing under a neighbor's beechnut tree, to a fascination with monastic life, and then to love--and the loss of that love which forms this book's silver thread of inquiry. Finally, a remembered journey down the Mississippi near home in an old cabin cruiser with her husband turns out, after all her international quests, to be the great adventure of her life. The real job of being human, Hampl finds, is getting lost in thought, something only leisure can provide. The Art of the Wasted Day is a compelling celebration of the purpose and appeal of letting go.

I think this book suffered a bit from a case of right book, wrong time for me. I can see all the elements I would normally enjoy, and I did like it, but I guess I wasn't quite in the mood. But it did make me want to journal more. So a qualified pick.

BookishMarginalia Sounds right up my alley — #stacked! 3y

Lazy morning breakfast in. (Lazy for me, anyway: my partner made the eggs.)

I‘ve been plugging away at this book for a few weeks, mostly to calm down before bed. It was mentioned somewhere as a readalike with Wintering, which I really enjoyed. This is more focused on the idea of slowing down and the creativity and satisfaction in doing nothing. A good idea, but a book that refuses to be hurried, and I‘m not very good at reading slowly.

A gorgeous memoir/meditation on the art & importance of daydreaming, of solitude & the time to imagine, read & create; an elegant, perceptive reminder about what is precious; & musings on historical figures like Montaigne, who invented the essay form. I really loved this #audiobook, narrated by the author. I might need my own print copy.

For the worker bee, life is given over to the grim satisfaction of striking a firm line through a task accomplished. On to the next, and the next. Check, check. Done and done. It explains—and solves—nothing to call this workaholism.

…in description, we hear and feel the absorption of the author in the material. We sense the presence of the creator of the scene. This personal absorption is what we mean by style. It is strange that we would choose such an oddly surface-y word—style—for this most soulful aspect of writing. … Style is the real authority of a writer: more substantial than plot, less ego-dependant than voice.

Whereas the memoir seemed new or somehow modern, a rather suspect literary upstart and therefore a form that invites interrogation. But strictly speaking, autobiography is a genre far older than the novel and is hardwired into western literary history, perhaps from that first injunction of the oracle at Delphi: Know thyself.

Lindy @AlaMich My head is full of more design ideas than I will ever be able to knit; it‘s kind of like my book TBR. 😁 6y
Lindy @julesG Yes, they are toasty warm. The cream wool is Bluefaced Leicester that my friend @KathyR brought back from Scotland & the brown is an alpaca/merino blend that I bought from an alpaca farmer when I was in Saskatoon for Kenji & @shawnmooney ‘s wedding. So my mittens have Litsy connections. 😊 6y
julesG BFL is great. I bought some when I was in London last. Actually, I'm wearing some of that yarn today. Will share a picture. From the stitching I'd guess you used DK yarn, or is it actually fingering? 6y

There is something fundamentally photographic about memoir. Photographic rather than cinematic: not a story but a series of tableaux we are given to consider.

I was supposed to use the metronome but I almost never did, maddened by its pedantic tick-tock-ing. It was interrupting me.
“Interrupting what, ma cher?”
Daydreams. The mind, cantering over its landscape like an unbroken pony. The piano was a romantic soundtrack, not work I was doing.

I‘ve been very slow at making my way through this audiobook about daydreaming, not because I don‘t like it—I do!—but because I‘ve been chatting with my sister as we spend this week knitting together. Here I am yesterday in my favourite knitting spot in the library at the Banff Centre, where there‘s a panoramic view of the Rockies. #knittersofLitsy #LitsylovesLibraries

Lindy @Reviewsbylola @Suet624 @AmyG Thanks. My sister showed me how to knit two mittens at the same time, which is such a good idea, especially because I keep reinventing the pattern as I go. Also, this is my first attempt at knitting from the top down. 6y
Lindy @silentrequiem It really isn‘t hard. It just takes a little practice to get the tension, otherwise it‘s the same as knitting with a single colour. I love the way it makes mittens nice and warm with the layer of floats on the wrong side. 6y

This book is in desperate need of an outline and a better editor. It's stream of conscience writing style left me feeling like I was on a boat with no oars. Also the repeating got very annoying.

The moments where her prose were very beautiful kept me slogging forward. She also talked about interesting writers I've never heard of and am excited to find and read. So not a waist of my time but definitely not adding this one to my library.

Encountered my first rattlesnake while out hiking today. He rattled his tail at us. It freaked me out, but my husband was thrilled.
Listening to the tagged book on audio. A slow, circuitous exploration of leisure, practioners of a leisurely life, and the art of the personal essay. (It reminds me again I should read Montaigne.)

cherinium I, for one, think that's really cool. My husband is a herpetologist. Early on in our relationship, I learned that most of our leisure time would involve the pursuit of finding and photographing wild reptiles. At one time, I had a fear of snakes; but I've realized that (like most things that evoke fear) once I started to understand more about them, they aren't quite so scary. 😊 6y

GingerAntics Oh, will they chase you? Ew. 6y
merelybookish @GingerAntics I think they can lunge pretty fast. You're supposed to give them a wide berth, like 30 feet. 6y
Kalalalatja Don‘t worry, I can‘t keep away from them forever, I just avoid snake movies and feel lucky everyday that I don‘t live in a country with real snakes 😅 6y
GingerAntics Oh wow. All this time I‘ve been in Texas I‘ve never come across a rattle snake. In fact, the only snake I have ever seen that wasn‘t in a zoo was once on a run, this extra long “worm” was booking it down the path. We crossed each other, and it just kept going. I actually went back and got a video of it. It was not at all interested in me or what I was doing. It was tiny. That was about as close as I ever want to be to a snake. lol 6y

This is an alternate cover (designed by Brianna Hardin) and I think it‘s very appropriate! Much of this book is a musing on Michel de Montaigne and his essays. It‘s also about Hampl‘s upbringing, her lost love, her travels and other day wasters! But really, I am so inspired to read some Montaigne, I ordered an older Penguin edition as soon as I finished reading. This is a beautiful and enjoyable memoir; Hampl is an exceptional writer.
