Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones
Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones | Anthony Bourdain
19 posts | 27 read | 21 to read
In the multiweek "New York Times" bestseller "The Nasty Bits," bestselling chef and "No Reservations" host Anthony Bourdain serves up a well-seasoned hellbroth of candid, often outrageous stories from his worldwide misadventures. Whether surviving a lethal hot pot in Chengdu, splurging on New York's priciest sushi, or singing the praises of Ecuadorian line cooks and Hell's Kitchen dives, Bourdain is as provocative, engaging, and opinionated as ever. "The Nasty Bits "is an irresistible tasting menu of food writing at its outrageous best served up Bourdain style."

We had a massive storm overnight that often kept me awake, so I read and eventually finished this. I thought NB was my least favorite of Tony‘s books, but I enjoyed this much more than my recent reread of Medium Raw. Do not skip the short reflections on each essay at the end of the book. I think the Tony who died in 2018 was a more world weary unhappy guy than here. It was a bit joyous to read his (relatively) youthful enthusiasm.

Suet624 We had a massive windstorm the same evening. The wind and the house groaning kept me awake all night. 10mo

I loved everything about this chapter, and am liking this book so far! Bourdain‘s writing is so easy to read and down to earth that I‘ve gotten lost in almost every chapter.

This may be my favorite thing I saw today that was written about the amazing Anthony Bourdain. Chef Tyler Florence posted this on Twitter:
His swagger, his prose, his grit. Tony didn‘t give a fuck the way most of us wish we could. That‘s what made him special. Right now He, Bukowski, Hemingway and Wilde are splitting a bottle of scotch, swapping war stories, prepared to drink each other under the table, with verve.

DebBates101 Me too 😢 I admired his willingness to be open and share his battle with both depression and drugs. I hope that suicides like his, Kate Spade, and Robin Williams, help bring to light the fact that people who are depressed have become exceptional at hiding the pain they feel everyday. 7y

I first learned of Anthony Bourdain because of a college reading assignment on Typhoid Mary. This death hit hard and maybe because I have been quietly struggling for a couple of months. It‘s so crazy how hard it is for us to talk about our pain and struggles. Litsy is such a beautiful community of wonderful people. I wish I could hug all of you. You are all important, beautiful people. I am sending hugs and love.

Suzze ❤️❤️❤️ 7y
kgriffith As are you 💜 Is there a self-hug thing you can do today? 7y

laundry_piles Big hugs, you are not alone. And you are loved. ❤️ 7y
Mitch ❤️❤️❤️ 7y
JoScho I think one of the comforting things I have gotten from Litsy-because we are pretty open here-is that all of us have those days. It makes me feel better about my days that are driven by anxiety knowing you wonderful people feel the same way sometimes. You are not alone. You are amazing and anytime you want to talk or vent just e-mail me. Snuggle up with Nigel and a good book and yay for Friday ❤️ 7y
Trashcanman I am sorry you are struggling, I am too, but not quietly. It provides a catharsis but only a momentary one. I am past the point of return. 7y
Kaye I think you‘re amongst others who have the same affliction. It‘s learning how to address it, admit it‘s there, and research ways of treatment. Litsy may have been laid in your path to help you make that step. Nothing to be ashamed of. ♥️♥️♥️ 7y
Kaye @TrashCanMan Keep up the struggle . You have no clue how many lives you are touching by talking about it openly. Your success will be a success for us all. 7y
Trashcanman @Kaye I feel people are tired of it, or maybe they don't know how to respond to it. I've lost followers which is OK. It doesn't bother me, and I don't blame them. Feel like I'm ruining a place where people come to avoid their own problems and have some enjoyment and then there's some asshole (me) complaining about his life. 7y
CouronneDhiver Feel free to open up... this is the most accepting/encouraging group I‘ve ever met. We‘re here. 🙏🏽 7y
Kaye Well, if you‘re in the A**hole club, then so am I. Which one gets to be President ? Don‘t pay attention to how many followers you have. Not important. YOU are important. 7y
Lreads As someone who has ongoing mental health issues I just want you to know you don‘t have to struggle alone or in silence. There are loving, caring Littens who want you to feel better and achieve your version of happiness. 💙 (edited) 7y
knittedgnome It is hard to talk about but I'm glad that you, @Trashcanman , and so many others are being open about your struggles. I hope knowing that you are not alone brings a little bit of comfort to you. 7y
Lreads @Trashcanman You are a valuable person and so many of us Littens care about you. Some people don‘t know how to respond or in what way they can be helpful. I don‘t think you are ruining this place - I think you add something meaningful to it. 7y
Trashcanman I didn't mean to hijack your post @Craftylikefox I'm here if you need to talk ever shout out. 7y
Trashcanman @QuietlyLaura thank you, I thank you truly. 7y
Trashcanman @knittedgnome I appreciate your kind words. Thank you 7y
Trashcanman @Kaye LOL thanks Kaye. 7y
SledgeReader @Craftylikefox @Trashcanman I am new to Litsy and you both reached out to me making me feel welcome and valued. We all struggle in varying ways. I proudly tell you professional counseling saved me after being kidnapped 10 years ago. I am more than happy to be a sounding board to any one. You CAN do this. Talking is the only way to cope. shsledge2@gmail.com 7y
Craftylikefox Thank you so much 💕 you are all Fantastic beautiful humans and this is what makes Litsy so absolutely wonderful @suzze @kgriffith @Chrysta23 @mitch @laundry_piles @CouronneDhiver @QuietlyLaura @joscho hugs and 💕💕💕 thank goodness for people like you in the world and pets. My dog puts up with all my hugs. (edited) 7y
Craftylikefox @Trashcanman thank you so much. What you do is so important. Some people might be “over it” but it‘s important to share our feelings. To remind people we aren‘t alone. I appreciate your posts so much. We can‘t be quiet. It makes it so much worse. 💕💕💕 7y
Craftylikefox @SledgeReader I am so glad you felt welcomed Litsy is an amazing community! Thank you so much for reaching out! Talking is so important and I think that I forget it too easily. 💕💕💕 7y
Craftylikefox @Kaye thank you so much 😊 this is a wonderful safe place and I am so glad I have got to meet such a wonderful people like you! I have never felt so much 💕 around me. I am totally up for joining that a**hole club! 7y
Craftylikefox @JoScho thank goodness for dogs 💗 I am so glad I have gotten to know you better because of Litsy. You have a big heart. This is a community that has brought together so many fantastic people! 7y
Trashcanman @SledgeReader thank you so much for that offer and I hope life has been kinder 😊 hugs 7y
Kaye Well, @Craftylikefox I myself dont think we‘re in the bad guys‘ club. We‘re all just people. We all have issues of some type, be it physical ailments, mental health issues, marital problems, problems in our families, money problems....the list goes on and on. Everyone has difficulties in life. If we share with others who care, it makes it easier somehow. 7y

1. Anthony Bourdain - he definitely has a lot of stories plus he seems like a laid back, cool person. I love him.

2. 311 💚

3. wine - I was going to say coffee, but let‘s be realistic

#TrivialThursday @GarthRanzz

Trashcanman You like 311? I LOVE 311! I have two 311 tattoos! 7y
Ubookquitous And Bourdain can cook! Especially “unusual” foods! 7y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman That‘s amazing! Yes, love them! Especially the older stuff. I fell in love with them when I was about 16. Their music always puts me in a good mood. 7y

Trashcanman Same here! Music, grassroots, the blue album, transistor, sound system, from chaos, and Evolver are amazing! By far my favorite is Sound System and then Transistor. Their newer stuff has some good sounds here and there but they got a little too light IMO. 7y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman Completely agree about the newer stuff. I started with the blue album because that‘s the first time I‘d heard them, then worked my way backwards, then forward as they did. Music is probably my favorite. Been listening to their greatest hits album with my 4 and 5 year old sons (editing as needed, lol). They love them so far. 😁 7y
Trashcanman That's so cool, their music is awesome and so positive it really does up lift you. You're 1000000 times cooler now, lol. Hope a good day tomorrow, "stay positive and love your life" 7y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman 😁🙌🏻 Some of my favorite lyrics. 7y
JoScho I met Nick Hexum when I was in college and he was so nice ❤️ 7y
britt_brooke @JoScho Jealous!! 7y
JoScho @britt_brooke yes but I had a monstrous size zit at the time so there is that. 😂 and apparently that still plaques me 17 years later 7y
batsy 3 - my exact answer! Will there be ice? But I'll make do with warm wine or whisky, needs must 😂 7y

#FierceFeb #Nasty I know I should be going for girl power here but I went the easy way out with the only book currently in my stacks with 'nasty' in the title. Although. Not my favorite of Bourdain's books but this collection of essays--mostly surrounding food--can be outrageous & a bit nasty in tone & sometimes subject matter.

batsy Clever pick! Love Bourdain 😊 7y

This book was SO obnoxious, but the intro had so many bits that spoke to the exact way I feel about life, travel, being an expat.... So much so that I did something I never, ever do: I actually used a highlighter on a book! I know, I know. I'm shocked too.
