The Kalahari Typing School for Men
The Kalahari Typing School for Men: More from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency | Alexander McCall Smith
26 posts | 42 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
THE NO. 1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY. FOR ALL CONFIDENTIAL MATTERS AND ENQUIRIES. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED FOR ALL PARTIES. UNDER PERSONAL MANAGEMENT. A beguiling mystery and lyrical novel of Africa -- the fourth in a series that the L.A. Times calls thoroughly engaging and entertaining. Now that The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (the only detective agency for ladies and others in Botswana) is established, its founder, Precious Ramotswe, can look upon her life with pride: shes reached her late thirties (the finest age to be), has a house, two children, a good fianc -- Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni -- and many satisfied customers. But life is never without its problems. It turns out that her adopted son is responsible for the dead hoopoe bird in the garden; her assistant, Mma Makutsi, wants a husband and needs help with her idea to open the Kalahari Typing School for Men; yet Mma Ramotswes sexist rival has no trouble opening his Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency across town. Will Precious Ramotswes delightfully cunning and profoundly moral methods save the day? Follow the continuing story of Botswanas first lady detective in the irresistible The Kalahari Typing School for Men. From the Hardcover edition.

This 4th book in the series really focuses on Mma Makutsi, the assistant lady detective. She flexes her entrepreneurial muscles and her love life (or lack thereof) gets examined. Life continues on for Mma Ramotswe and her fiance Mr JLB Matekoni as he returns to work from his illness and they deal with a misbehaving Puso. Mma Ramotswe faces her first competitor in the detective business and she helps a businessman right past wrongs. ⬇️

I really miss the #FoodandLit challenge, so I did something similar in private 😁

For the little monthly challenge @LiljaPleasant wrote for me I've read the tagged book set in #Botswana - so I made myself a Botswanan Cabbage Salad and the famous Bush Tea they drink in the book series.

Both dishes were very interesting and something new and different.

I took the day off and spent the morning at the botanical gardens and the afternoon doing a little me shopping with my daughter. It‘s been a great day, even if it was interrupted by physical therapy. My therapists are awesome and I took them cake to celebrate my day with me. 😁

November #doublespin done (only like a week late!) @TheAromaofBooks

The 4th book in the series, so I feel like if you've read this far by this point you know what to expect from the series, and this installment delivers that. An enjoyable, quick read.

Back to Mma Ramotswe because I need her calming influence to ease some of my irritation that I‘m going on week three with a torn up house when it was supposed to take 5 days or so.

A rival agency, some interesting money making schemes, and a fascinating man with a conscience. Also, the development of an interesting romance. All handled with the alacrity and wisdom of the great Precious Ramotswe. #recentlyread #nospoilers #femaledetective #seriesfiction ❤️🖤👌📖🔍

Soubhiville Yay! I love these books! Do you read any of his other series? 6y
aa_guer2021 @Soubhiville I haven't. Is there any books in particular that you would recommend? 6y
Soubhiville I really liked the Portuguese Irregular Verbs set- there are just 4, and they‘re very very short. They follow a professor who manages to misread all social situations, and fumbles up pretty much everything he gets involved with. I thought they were hilarious. I haven‘t tried any of his others yet. 6y

Ahh, Mme. Ramotswe... Your quiet wisdom should be listened to. Ms. Marple of Botswana, indeed. #currentlyreading #ladydetective #wisdom 💙🇧🇼

This second installment continues the story of Mma Ramotswe. There is less focus on the detective agency and more insight into the life and feelings of the characters, particularly Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi, her assistant. The story was not as mind blowing as the first one but nonetheless the pages kept turning until the end, which held a superb surprise! 4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

CSeydel Loved these! But I thought Tears of the Giraffe was book 2? 6y

Penal codes, then, were all very well, but she wondered whether it might not be simpler to rely on something like the Ten Commandments. Everybody knew that it was particularly wrong to kill; everyone knew that it was wrong to steal; everyone knew that it was wrong to commit adultery and to covet one's neighbors goods...she hesitated. No they did not

It is possible to change the world, if one is determined enough, and if one sees with sufficient clarity just what it is that has to be changed.

In this installment of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency we find Mma Ramotswe helping a man right the wrongs of his past, her assistant trying to find a husband but instead finding her own mettle, and her fiancé learning to deal with depression. As always there was a fine mystery, but these novels are about way more than the mysteries. They are about life and the best way to struggle through, and, of course, MMa Ramotswe‘s infinite wisdom.

#4in48readathon book 4 of 4!

I did it! Thanks @Syndelle777 it was fun to jump in at the last minute!

I just love this series. So glad I decided to reread them this year. In this one Precious faces her first challenges as a foster parent, helps a man settle two wrongs committed 20 years earlier, and Mma Makutsi dives into her own business venture. 💛

One of my favourite authors for light but lovely stories. Mma Ramotswe and the rest of the crew feel like old friends. The stories are fast paced and homespun and always with a moral foundation. I always enjoy my fictional visits to Botswana.

I'm still enjoying this series at the 4th one in - relaxing is the best way to describe them, I think. Comfy characters, charming stories, slow-and-steady pacing.
