Crow Blue
Crow Blue: A Novel | Adriana Lisboa
10 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
I was thirteen. Being thirteen is like being in the middle of nowhere. Which was accentuated by the fact that I was in the middle of nowhere. In a house that wasn't mine. In a city that wasn't mine, in a country that wasn't mine, with a one-man family that, in spite of the intersections and intentions (all very good), wasn't mine. When her mother dies, thirteen-year-old Vanja is left with no family and no sense of who she is, where she belongs, and what she should do. Determined to find her biological father in order to fill the void that has so suddenly appeared in her life, Vanja decides to leave Rio de Janeiro to live in Colorado with her stepfather, a former guerrilla notorious for his violent past. From there she goes in search of her biological father, tracing her mother's footsteps and gradually discovering the truth about herself. Rendered in lyrical and passionate prose, Crow Blue is a literary road trip through Brazil and America, and through dark decades of familial and political history.

I really liked how Fernando‘s story was interwoven throughout. Like Vanja‘s mother, the story floats around rather than staying in one place, and that worked for me.

Cinfhen Such a pretty photo/ and I agree with @Butterfinger awesome #MultiTasking 💜 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger @Cinfhen that‘s one of the things I love about January, it‘ so easy to check off multiple prompts with one book! (edited) 4y

TheAromaofBooks This was on my short list for #foodandlit but it wasn't at the library. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!! 4y
ChasingOm My library hold should be available any day now! 😄 4y
BarbaraBB Saramago! I mostly find his books so vague and difficult... although I loved 4y
Kalalalatja Way to go with hitting all those prompts! 🙌 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraBB this one isn‘t by him, but I feel the same way about Saramago! I loved Blindness 4y
BarbaraBB 🙈🙈🙈🙈 I was too hasty, it‘s just the blurb I read. So stupid 🙈🙈 (edited) 4y

This paragraph really made me think of my birth father. 💜 This description is a great way of wording how he also trusted my truth, and accepted my existence in a way that was so affirming and meaningful to me.

Pickpick

It was slow to start, and the different timelines and character backstories were a bit uneven, but in the end I didn't care. The writing was so beautiful that I just loved it. One of those times that I wish a book was longer.

Coming of age, finding family, immigration, revolution.

I'm so glad that #FoodandLit inspired me to pick this one up. I definitely would have missed it without "travelling" to Brazil with my fellow Littens.

Butterfinger That is a huge recommendation when a reader wishes the book is longer. I'm glad you are enjoying our "travels". 4y
alisiakae I‘m not 1/2 way yet, but I think I‘ll feel the same way about wishing this book was longer! 4y

Enjoying an Açaí bowl for lunch today! Although this version is quite different from how açaí bowls originated, which according to this article, is eaten unsweetened alongside manioc.

https://tamboracai.com/history-of-the-acai-bowl/

Butterfinger I can get this in my little town (I am actually in Marion). This is my eldest's favorite snack. To think that the Jujitsu founder created the bowl. How cool. I am learning so much. 4y

bnp This has gone n my wish list. Maybe this summer when there is a Lusophone read on LT. 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger I like to have an açaí bowl after a particularly strenuous workout (like today ?). The nearby juice bar sells them! 4y
IndoorDame That looks delicious! 4y
Amiable Yummy! 4y
Jerdencon Looks good! 4y
Texreader So açaí is Brazilian? There‘s a place in my neighborhood and that‘s all they serve. I‘m not sure if I‘d like them anyway... 4y
Catsandbooks I'm not sure I'd like them the original way, but yours looks delicious! 4y
alisiakae @Texreader açaí is indigenous to multiple countries in central and South America, but I think the açaí bowl concept originated in Brazil. Not ? sure though. The consistency and taste is similar to a smoothie, my juice bar blends it with almond milk, banana, and berries (at least for this version). 4y
alisiakae @Catsandbooks it was yummy! 4y
ChasingOm I fell in love with açaí bowls in Hawai‘i! I‘ve never been able to replicate them at home... ? 4y
Texreader Since I don‘t like smoothies I‘m fairly certain this wouldn‘t work for me. BUT my daughter is now convinced! She said I could get her one and I could take a pic for Litsy! 4y
DebinHawaii They were (and still are) huge in Hawaii—starting with the surfers here & now in most coffee & juice shops. I used to eat one every Friday when I worked from my local coffee shop a couple of days a week. I need to have one to celebrate Brazil—it‘s a great reason! 😋😉 4y
alisiakae @ChasingOm I found frozen açaí at Costco once, but if wasn‘t the same consistency and was way too sweet. I only ever get it at juice bars. 4y

I‘m excited to start the first of my two selections for #foodandlit! We will be making a trip to a Brazilian bakery later today to pick up some coxinha and other treats!

Crazeedi You have a Brazilian bakery? How very cool 4y
bnp This is enticing. Hope to hear back about what you think. 4y
alisiakae @Crazeedi we do! And a few Brazilian restaurants, but most of the restaurants aren‘t doing take out, so can‘t go there until cases go down, we‘re not dining indoors yet 4y

TheKidUpstairs I just finished this one. Took me a bit to get into it, but I ended up really liking it. Hope you do too! 4y
Butterfinger Ooh! I might have to go east this weekend. I never thought to google “nearest Brazilian bakery.“ 4y
mhillis I liked this book. Looking forward to your review! 4y

Mehso-so

The main thread is a sense of belonging and strange moments that accompany the life in new, foreign country. This aspect is very well represented through 3 main characters, who carry their foreignness in their own way. The weakness of the story is its structure. The story of the girl is constantly interrupted in a very rough way with a story about the past, and such a way of narration is ineffective and intrusive. Strong premise, but weak execution.

Emilymdxn Writing style seems gorgeous even if the narrative had some problems!! 6y
Simona @Emilymdxn Maybe I‘m too strict ... Have you read Compass by M.Enard from last year (I think) Man Booker International? Captivating story, rich prose and abundance of historical facts which are just placed between the main story, shredding reading rhythm into pieces. I really don‘t like that... 6y
Emilymdxn No I haven‘t! Last year was my final year at university so I did nothing but study, I barely read anything at all! That does sound like a difficult format - I get testy with over experimental prose too 6y
Simona @Emilymdxn I wouldn‘t say that it is experimental, just extremely unconnected ...🙄 6y
